Ok guys, we have been given the special price of 110USD per driver for this one-time group buy.
That's 220USD per pair of drivers PLUS other costs. EAD is working on getting the shipping cost by boat as well as the lead time. OTHER COSTS include money transfer fees (from me to EAD), shipping from EAD to me, customs fees, brokerage fees, any taxes, shipping from me to you, the cost of any packaging materials, and whatever else I can't think of at the moment. All fees except for shipping from me to you will be split equally among the group buy participants. Assuming I can fit two drivers nicely into a flat rate box, shipping to US participants will be $9 plus insurance (if you'd like it). Shipping to members outside the US will be a minimum of $37 (international flat rate) UNINSURED or more if you'd like some insured option.
Off the top of my head, estimates for the fees could be about $30 for the money transfer, $40 for customs, $60 for brokerage, $50 for packaging materials... Assuming maybe $100 for shipping by boat and $100 for anything else, that comes to around $10 each. So that means your total cost for a pair of drivers will be about 230USD plus shipping from me to you.
I'll be emailing all of you on the list over the next few days with the above information and will ask for your information if you want to participate in this group buy.

Hello there..
spot the thread too late, anyway if more than two people are out, I'll be in for a couple of drivers.
Best regards,

Are you planning on shipping to Canada via USPS? Please don't use any of the courier services (UPS, FedEx, etc) for shipping to Canada. They charge a ridiculous brokerage fee on top of the shipping cost. It would probably be in the range of $50 for these drivers.
I'm still in for two
just looked at my profile and not sure if you can email me or not - if you have any trouble please post here and I will get back to you. I check this thread every day or two.
thanks again for your great work on this, I can't wait to get these units and put then in a GM triangular enclosure.

Hi guys. Don't worry, I haven't actually emailed any of you yet because I'm still waiting for the shipping quote from Anders at EAD. We're having some communication problems where all of my emails seem to be getting caught by his spam filter, but hopefully we'll get that sorted out and get things moving along here.
Could I get in on this?
Hi Brian,
Could I get in on this please? I will take a pair if at all possible.
Hope you can get me in.

FYI, there is a little-known way around these heinous fees (at least for UPS, FedEx probably has a similar procedure), but it involves some legwork on the receiving end. Hopefully you're near one of the major airport hubs where UPS stuff is held in a bonded warehouse while awaiting customs clearance...
First, you've gotta get the tracking number right away when the package is shipped. You call up UPS and tell them you are going to "self-broker" the package through customs. This needs to be done before they start doing it themselves. When your package arrives in Canada (usually at YVR, YYC, YYZ, etc.), UPS will notify you. You go to the UPS brokerage office at the airport and pick up the customs documentation. Then you walk over to the Canada Customs office, usually only a block or two away. It helps if you already know the import code, otherwise the customs agent will have to look it up. There is an online listing somewhere (one of those gc.ca websites). You pay your duty/gst, and then customs will electronically notify UPS that your package is cleared. Walk / drive another couple of blocks to the UPS warehouse, and they'll release it to you right there. I don't know if they'll still do delivery after self-brokering. I've done this a couple of times at YVR and YYC, and it takes about 30-45min, if you go at a not-too-busy time of day (mid afternoon or something).
What bugs me about the whole thing, is that all it takes if 5 minutes or less for someone at UPS to look at the shipping manifest and determine the import codes. I'm sure they have search tools to help them do it. The rest is all automatic / electronic. So you're paying $50 for ... what??? Total gouge. There's no reason they couldn't just charge a flat fee of $5 or something. They'd still be making a profit on the brokerage service.
Anyway, worth keeping in mind for the future, if there's ever something you need to order cross-border, and UPS is your only option.
I'm four hours away from any airport that the couriers use. What I hate about the sleazy "broker fee" is that they don't tell the shipper about it. The receiving party is told either pay up, or we return to sender and charge him for the return shipping. It's the sneakiness of it that burns my butt.
I have asked Anders if I can raise the order quantity, so if he allows it the rest of you who were on the reserve list or have asked recently will be in for a pair of drivers.
It will happen and should happen soon. I want to buy the drivers outright so I can collect payment on an individual basis instead of having to do it before making the purchase. I'm having some funds transferred around and should be able to make the buy next week 🙂
If funds are any sort of issue, I'll be glad to pay first, I just need to know how much, and where to send it.
Maybe if it makes your life easier we could do a two pay fort of deal where we send you say $225 which should cover most of it. Then after you know the exact charges are, we send you another payment.
