Yes... that works well.... We hooked one to a sig gen and the HV side to a door handle many years ago as a joke... Not a good idea, it turned out!

I had build an electric fence to prevent my cat from pis.ing in the plants with a flip flop and a car electronic ignition. It worked very well.

That reminds me of my boyhood days when I purchase practical joke items mail order from Ellisdons Joke Factory.

Who can remember black face soap, magic soot, joke spiders, joke matches, imitation ink blots etc. etc.?

And there was a buzzer which you concealed in your hand to give your friend a 'shock' when you shook hands with him!

My favourite purchase was the Seebackroscope.

I personally don't use cable lifters for practical reasons, but I see nothing wrong with using them, and I can see why they might make a difference. What do you guys care?

Depends on the construction quality of the connectors. Big heavy cables will exert great force on them. Cable lifter will reduce the force.
