For one thing, you ever check a circuit for intermittent behavior, or repeat a measurement that seems to give an unlikely result?
For another thing, one reason pols repeat the same catch-phrases over and over again, and ads often do the same, is because repetition creates familiarity with an idea which in turn may tend to make one feel more comfortable with it (the well known, so far found nonthreatening, is less likely a danger to be avoided). With familiarity and comfort, belief is more likely to follow. Searching for the name 'Cialdini' will lead to related info.

To me, insanity is to get so near to achieving something worthwhile and to give up. Or to achieve something worthwhile once and feel that it cannot ever be repeated again. This is why I am willing to cut Dan some slack. He never gives up, he will never give up. It is not the achieving, it is the doing that counts in life, and from that I can see in other people the jealousy it brings to a table that could always be fuller.

PS: it has been incredibly hot here, with a night air that is almost tropical with the smell of honeysuckle. The bats are out, and there is a nightjar high up overhead making its spooky whooping call. I can see deer silhouetted up on the craggs far away from the clouds of horseflies down here on the valley floor. The loch out the back is just like Solaris in a mirror.
A perfect end to a perfect day.
