It seems to be all about that people 'listen' to sound in different ways - acoustic information has many dimensions to it - loudness, FR, distortion, S/N, etc - and individuals will tune in strongly to one or a couple of these dimensions, and largely ignore the others.
What I try to do is to listen to the feedback of others, as well as myself. This is essential to cover all the bases.
Agree John , i would love to hear one of these super IC pre's, myself, all my current pre's are discrete.

John, Mitch Cotter was quite happy with his 1 IC preamp. I helped him with an AD797 turn-on problem once and he was very happy.

Well I don't know how to get a.wayne one of Mitch's preamps to listen to.
I'll ask Mitch. Dick Sequerra used the AD797, BUT he used two of them in parallel, OPEN-LOOP. You should give Dick a call, Scott, and get updated.

I spoke to Mitch Cotter this morning. He maintains that he still discourages high feedback circuits, whether IC or discrete.

Yes I remain puzzled a little, I made some with both pins accessed and then it worked that way (lost track of them). Maybe I'm missing something when there are two, maybe something with them in anti-phase????

Nothings off limits except peeking. Unimpeachable integrity doesn't count, there has to be a trained referee.
I would consider an IC used in an exotic way as not really the best choice. The AD745 also lends itself to open-loop use via the null pins. Two of them cross-coupled and anti-phase makes a nice diff-in/diff-out preamp at about 2nV.
Why not AD844 ?

Subjectively, Yes... Items used in practical situation as intended tells the tale, audio is after all , entertainment and monies spent is towards this target.
LP survives, because when used as intended, it rises to the top .... now, is John redeemed for going discrete, well until we can get that Highend audiophile approved IC from Scotty .. 🙂
