Well totally off topic, my batch of Russian caviar just came in today, perfect for this evening's celebrations.
So taking a risk on eBay, paid off!
So with the Champagne, shrimp and caviar among the other bits I am off for a great evening.
My best wishes to all of you for the coming year. May you, your hearing and equipment all improve next year.
Best wishes to you Ed, personally I've lost interest in most luxury foods but I wouldn't think begrudgingly of anyone else's interest. I'll probably sit around tonight watching the Twilight Zone binge on SciFy while eating sausage and kraut. We are in the process of brokering one last real estate deal so I can retire with a big loft art studio/listening space.

Not a bag gig, either. 🙂
Best wishes to everyone as we step into 2016!

Right, I've spent 40 Yr. trying to advance things and it's time to take my day of rest.
Saignant, à point, bien cuit ?
More importantly Earl Holiman (Mingo) was the star of season 1 episode 1.
I'm glad I had luxury foods when I did. As they say, been there, done that. And now Beluga mallosol is banned due to the sturgeon being endangered, according to Petrossian. I can manage well without, and some other items are more interesting and not as dear as they used to be --- truffles a case in point.Best wishes to you Ed, personally I've lost interest in most luxury foods but I wouldn't think begrudgingly of anyone else's interest. I'm invited to a dinner party tonight. I hope the access to their house is not blocked by security concerned about an attack on the Hollywood sign. I may take an alternate route. Los Angeles is listed along with NYC and Washington DC as a potential terrorist target. But LA is a big place.
Actually that is what I am taking to the party. For various reasons Champagne and Caviar will be welcomed. (I do suspect a Romanoff will be there with family tales that do not cast a good light on the elders.)
I posted this elsewhere with little response!

I'm positive you'll be very happy together, Mr. Simon
Why do you think it will be one of the women?
The ones I know celebrate in their traditional family style, they get drunk and pass out. Then get upset if it is suggested that perhaps it is not a good role model for the youngsters.
Of course in the process of getting drunk, the conversation does turn to a bit of off the books history.
But seeing the reaction here, I probably won't serve anything on a silver platter. Too much effort to polish it.
I do keep a silver letter tray and silver paper clip etc. dish on my office desk. (Can't even sell off the old silver for more than 85% of silver prices, yet alone for what replacements cost. So I keep it.)

Yes, dither is 'good cheap insurance' that tends to hide potential distortion artifacts. Analog tape got MORE LINEAR with lower and lower operating level, what does digital do? Just the opposite, so hiding the non-linearity is a comforting thing.
Now, I will go back to the measurements I am making with my SR-1 analyzer, whether or not it is dithered or not. I never thought to find out.
Not really. A little digital 101:
(1) A digital channel is not a proper digital channel unless it is properly dithered. So if you want to talk about something that is not properly dithered, then you are talking about something other than digital.
(2) A digital channel has zero nonlinear and linear distortion. It does have a certain bit resolution, and a maximum bandpass dictated by the sample rate.
Therefore, talking about "hiding nonlinearity" and undithered digital suggests a certain lack of familiarity with the topic.
BTW I've heard so much about digital audio and out of band signals that I've obtained a little test equipment to do some real world investigations with:

Good enough?
???
room tone is not noise, it needs to be dithered when any change is made to it, changing less than 6 db does not negate the need for dither.
Actually room noise has a combination of stochastic and deterministic components.
An example of a deterministic noise is that from rotating HVAC equipment such as blowers.
An example of a stochastic noise is that due to the movement of air.
Their magnitudes may be similar.
An interesting additional component is human noise which has sub components from:
(1) Umm, bodily functions
(2) Movement of the body including clothing rubbing against itself
(3) incidental speech
These sounds, when generated by instrumentalists or the audience are utterly unpredictable, and thus effectively noise.
That's the theory and after about 12 years of regularly doing live recordings, that's the practice. You ought to get out, more.

Very nice Scott.
I finished up at my former employer, the 'N' company in July this year and was well taken care of. My wife and I have settled in a small village in a very nice house, close to some beautiful forests. Looking forward to doing some serious audio work, and listening, over the coming years.
Best wishes for 2016 to you and the rest of DIY 'Lounge Gang'
(And Pavel, special thanks to you for injecting some rationality into these discussions)

Ed your largess is well documented, I hope you realize that there are other folks here that have done OK by themselves not that it adds any weight to ones contributions.

Same to you, I'm very excited about my new venue.

You beat me. Supper was reheated whatever was in the fridge. But that's what having babies does to you 🙂 Not decided what to watch yet tho. The teenagers are coming over later so they will probably commandeer the remote.
As for new years resolutions, I just might get the stereo working to an acceptable standard...

That's one possibility.
(a couple of my well-off and middle-aged acquaintances are taken to the wallet cleaners by pretty young boyz)

I understand, I did it for four now it's my time top play. OTOH this might seem really silly but on some level I'm jealous.

Scott,
As usual we don't communicate. I gave them just the keys.
Also RC cars. This year they got helicopters.
ES.

Well will definitely get disarmed after the 6th, but project kick off meeting for that has not happened yet! I look at it that I'd have only wasted my money on cars and hifi. Should get some playtime before I'm too old.
