JBL PB12 subwoofer, Class D amp, dead.

Bash Amp in PB12

Here are the pictures. The last one shows the piece of wood I filled the old amp hole with but it doesn't show the thin piece I put over it. I still need to paint it black, but no one can see it so no big hurry. So far the amp works great.

I mounted the new amp last night and it works great! I still need to do some tuning and adjustment to get the levels right. It is so nice to have it come on and not make an irritating squawk noise. I took a few pics. Hopefully I can get them posted tonight.

I think I will go ahead and try to sell the old amp. It was still functioning other than the annoying noise at turn on and it does have a couple dark spots on the board.

I ended up cutting a piece of 3/4 oak plywood I had laying around to fill the old amp hole and then covered that with a thin piece of hardboard stuff. I'm sure it's much better sealed that way than it would have been just putting the original amp face plate back in and now I can try to sell the old amp.

So after you filled the old amp hole did you cut a new hole for the bash amp ?
Does it sound like the amp has more power than the one you pulled out ?
I just sold a broke velodyne plate amp , it was a powerfull one (1000 watts) but I got $28 plus 15 shipping .
I would start it at $15 , it works and its 350 watts just makes a annoying noise .

It sounds like it has a little more power than the old one as it should, 300 watts vs 250 from the old one. I haven't really put it through a good test yet though. I have the volume at about 3/4 power level and re-ran the auto setup on my HK reciever. It set the Sub level at -3 and it sounded good watching The 300 last night. I may bump up the sub level a couple notches for a little more rumble though.

I really need to fix my PB12 like you did yours .
But I dont need another sub , maybe I could fix it and sell it !

Looks like I get to modify my PB-12 as well...

Well I just read this whole thread, and it looks like I'm not the only one who's had issues with their PB12. I've got 2 JBL PB12s that I've had for about 4 years now (I used to have their older, bigger brother a PSW-115, however that one had a catastrophic failure, and they wouldn't service it). 2 days ago one of my PB12s kicked the bucket, and it was making a 'squawking' sound when coming out of standby (which I see someone else experienced).
I haven't yanked the amp yet (in fact I'm about to do that now) but from what I've read it might be easier for me to forego the repair process and just get a plate amp. So I've got 2 questions for anyone that is willing to answer them.
1) Has anyone had any issues with a plate amp on their PB12 and have their been any unforseen issues installing one (for instance any significant changes in the way the sub sounds). I see pictures of an installation...it looks cleaner than I expected. If you've got a picture of the finished product can you post it?
2) Unrelated but perhaps one of you have done this. I noticed there is no fiberglass or polyfill lining. Has anyone put any of this into their PB12 (my thoughts are it should increase bass extension). Just curious!

I just got that plate amp in a couple of weeks ago and so far it sounds great. I think better than the original amp and I'm glad I did it as it was cheaper than buying a new sub. I'll try to remember to take a finished picture of it sometime this weekend.

I can't say how the polyfill would effect it. Couldn't hurt to try it I guess. You could always pull it back out.

Polyfill or fiberglass would effect the port A LOT , it would slow down the air getting to it .
Once the port is perfect you wont need any polyfill , plus it would come out the port edventually , if it clumpted up in the port it would REALLY mess up the sound .
I have read people get a PB 12 driver and put in in a 3 cubic foot sealed box , supposed to sound real good !

PB12

So, I yanked the amp and there definitely appears to be some heat damage on the PCB (posted pictures). None of the components look like they have any physical damage, either. All I've got is a multi-meter (and no device to test the small caps near the area). Also noticed that my board is a Revision 2. I might try to just blindly replace some of the components in the area that looks damaged (as that would be cheap) but if that doesn't do the trick I'm definitely going to look into one of these plate amps I've heard about (seems to be the most reliable way to approach this thing). Any input I can get is welcome.

And thanks for the input on the polyfil. I did not think about the port tuning (or it moving around in the box for that matter). I might try it just out of curiosity (I've always felt this sub should go deeper than it does) but if it muddies up the sound it's a no-go. I'll post my results for anyone that is curious.

truckman: yeah if you could get a picture sometime this weekend that'd be awesome, I'm really curious to see it.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I would GUESS that polyfill would be equivalent (sound wise) to partially covering up the port .
Usually to go lower, a bigger box will do it . but to do ported you would need the speakers peramiters and run them through WIN ISD , (I dont know where you could find that info) .
Since that speaker looks to be in a smal cabinet and you plan on cutting it up for a new amp I would serioslly consider building a 3 cubic foot sealed box as a test , you would only be out $25 .
If you dont have a saw you could buy a sheet of particle board and have a GOOD lumber suppley place cut ALL the pieces for you .
I think they charge 50 cents per cut , I would put a inch or so of fiberglass on the walls also , possibly put a piece of tape over the vented voice coil (back of the magnet) . I have had some dust caps torn off ..

Sorry I didn't realize those images were so big...I can't edit my post to change them to attachments. 🙁
Can you go into Image Shack and reduce the size of pictures there?

Here are the almost finished pictures of mine. Who knows when I will get around to painting the wood where I plugged the old amp hole.
My floor is really dirty as we are in a slow state of remodel around here and as you can see I still need to refinish the floors and install baseboards.

I never tried imageshack, I got mine to work by just changing my setting on my camara to poor/low quality and it came out great !
No need to paint the panal just leave the amp side out , anyway that side needs to be out for adj purposes ..

Agreed on the paint. I'm not too worried about it since no one will ever see it, but I might get around to putting some paint on it for giggles someday. I'm glad it works again without making annoying noises and I spent less money than buying a new one.

Now I need to get around to putting the old amp on ebay to see if anyone wants it.
