JBL PB12 subwoofer, Class D amp, dead.

Hi guys

about the JBL pb12 the problem lies in the quality of the PCB because from vibrations of the bass its very easy to be damaged so short curcuit or something else is hapening thats why is frying potatoes inside. Am from macedona and the distributor of JBL here is my frend he told me that the pb 12 amplifier is of very low quality, i also wanted to buy that sub but i went with Infinity Beta SW 12 which am very satisfied😀

Bye Bye
Alex

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I have two questions. The first is for charger_1: What exactly did you do to get it to work? I read through the thread, but I was unclear on precisely what you did. You said you got it working.

The second is more general: I have noticed that most of you are talking about the pb12. I have a psw-d115, which appears to be a larger version of the same design. Same crappy S64AMI, at the very least. It worked quite well for me for about two and a half years, until someone in the house decided to let it turn itself off when we weren't using it. I am pretty sure I want to try and save it. None of the parts on the main board(s) seem damaged, so I am pretty sure its the SAMI. Is it worth trying to save? I really liked it while it worked, so I would rather not trash it. One interesting thing about this unit is its split into two separate boards (one is hooked up to all the inputs and has the crossovers, the other has the PS and amp circuitry). Would it be possible to build a replacement for just the amp board, possibly completely from scratch, and save the inputs, crossovers, etc? Would this even be a good idea? (I can post some pictures if you need to see a bit more to help answer this question).

Also, what about jasonlaronde's question? Will that work, or is it at best a temporary solution? (or is that what charger_1 did?)

Any answers will be read with much care and thought. And thanks.

Hello Aleksandar

I got this link from a friend of mine. I also tried to get a list of what that server has, but no luck since I am not computer savvy.
I also believe the HOM on the link indicates Home (for their line of home products). I would try replacing HOM with CAR or MOB and the PB12 sm.pdf with PX300.4 sm.pdf.

Good luck!

I am looking for a blown pb12 if anyone is willing to sell one cheap!

I have another blown pb12, Wow, the circuit was charred!! I run mine with my PA amp, I just dug the blown board out and put a jack there instead. If anyone wants to sell a blown one cheap, I am in the market as long as it has a good pb12 woofer in it!

I have one of these POS things and currently it is still working, but it squawks annoyingly every time it comes out of standby. Does anyone have any good recommendations on how to fix it? I'm not opposed to replacing the amp in it, if it's not impossible for a electronics novice and it's cheaper than buying something new.

get a new amp !

I dont know what it takes to fix it but..
Parts express has a great plate amp SA240 $109 including free delivery ! 240 watts at 4 ohms , it comes with auto turn on and everything .
I would mount it on the outside of the box and leave that junk amp alone ! ( I did that )
that sa240 drives my 15" dayton quatro , my other amp is a crown xls 402 and I had to turn the parts express amp down 1/2 way , it was overpowering the other sub a lot .
Also that amp sounds way better than the crown !
I would sell your working pb12 amp on ebay and put the money towards that amp and you will be very happy , plus you get a new amp with a huge warrenty !
Read the reviews on the amp, its on the same page as the amp .

Thanks. I ended up ordering the Bash 300W Digital Subwoofer Amplifier, part #300-750 from PE for $125. I found a few reports where people had good success using it in place of the crap amp in it. I even found pictures where a guy installed it into the side and just kept the face plate of the old amp to keep the hole sealed. I plan to do the same.

Smart move !
Its best to keep the factory internall volume the same .
I was debating that amp, what sold me was if the amp ever dies
parts express will fix the sa240 for $30 (new outputs) wheras the bash is not repairable .
I found A/B type amps last longer and ARE repairable .
I had the hum problem but a groud elimanter plug solved it .

Hopefully I won't have to worry about the amp going bad for a long time. 😀 at least long enough to where I can afford to just buy a whole new sub if it goes bad. It seems a lot of companies are going with the Bash amps so I figured they must be good.

I have the same problem. Ive owned my PB12 for 7 years and for years it's always sqawked coming out of standby but was always a very nice amp, other than always smelling "electrically hot" in the back since the day I got it. never thought there was anything wrong, after all, it lasted 7 years. but yesterday the green lights are popping red quite a bit and if i turn it off and back on, sometime it will kick in, but i think it's finally had it's day. i read a lot about the poor amp design and now I looked the amp you just bought from parts express and i think i might do that. I dont know. unless you have a working PB12 amp that I could just swap out and save me some $. were you going to sell it on ebay?? were you the one who had the working amp? i just registered a minute ago si I could post to this forum cuz my problem just happened last night.....

what should I do?

is it easy to throw the SA240 amp on this thing?

pb12

I did not have the working jbl amp , I recall it was a tall narrow amp like 4x10" the sa240 is a square amp (10x10")
It wont fit and if you modify the wood cabinet to fit it you may change the internall size of the cabinet (that may make it sound not as good) .
The sa240 is a encased box so there is no reason you cant just set it on the ground and run the speaker wires from the amp to your speaker , you will have to unscrew the speaker and extend the wires from the pb12 , you can run the wires out of the port hole or put a connector on the bottom of the pb12 (you can get those at radioshack)
The back of the speaker has 1/4" male terminals on it the amp has 1/4" female terminals on it , all you would need a length of wire with the correct terminals on it .
I mounted the sa240 on a 3.5" tall wooden box I screwed on my subwoofer .
Since the amp has auto turn on you wont have to do anything to the amp once it hooked up .
PS : on the amp one of the terminals is a strange size !

Looks like my new amp is sitting on the porch waiting for me according to the ups tracking info!

I found some pictures from a few years ago where someone cut a hole in the side of the cabinet to mount the new amp. I think that is what I am going to do. I will just have to gut the old amp and keep the face plate off of it in place as to keep the cabinet sealed. I will try to take some pictures and post them up when I get around to doing it. Probably will be this weekend sometime.

Great !
I love doing the fun stuff !
I will try and post some of my amp mounting also .
You will have PLENTY of power for that speaker , try not to blow the speaker , hopefully that amp has protection if not it may kill the amp if you fry the speaker .
PS :
EBAY your old amp !

I mounted the new amp last night and it works great! I still need to do some tuning and adjustment to get the levels right. It is so nice to have it come on and not make an irritating squawk noise. I took a few pics. Hopefully I can get them posted tonight.

I think I will go ahead and try to sell the old amp. It was still functioning other than the annoying noise at turn on and it does have a couple dark spots on the board.

I ended up cutting a piece of 3/4 oak plywood I had laying around to fill the old amp hole and then covered that with a thin piece of hardboard stuff. I'm sure it's much better sealed that way than it would have been just putting the original amp face plate back in and now I can try to sell the old amp.
