Indian companies do print at much lower prices but often the paper used isn't too good . However that could be arranged as they do use very good paper for other purposes. Many Asian editions cost a fraction of the original US price but printing and paper is inferior. However there are also lower priced Asian editions being printed in Singapore and Taiwan ( maybe China too !) with better paper and good print quality at slightly higher prices but lower than US prices.

Well, as a (small) publisher let me tell you that the cost of paper and printing are a very small part of the cost of publishing. I can easily get a very good quality printing, on very good paper, of a 500 page book for 7 or 8 $ each here in Holland.
It's all the other stuff to get it actually out to people and pay all those managers up the ladder that causes the high cost.

The drug companies have recently found that 90% of the published research work on early cancer drugs is wrong:

The medical research business knows the same thing that most other scientific researchers know. Carefully choosing your samples (patients) has a great influence on the outcome of a study. If you want a certain outcome, choose your "samples" to influence the odds in your favor.

As stated, being published is mandantory in most research fields. It is KEY to obtaining grant money. So is the lecture circuit. In many cases the researchers receive economic bonuses in proportion to the grant money they bring in.

Cancer research has progressed to the point where genetic testing (DNA profiling) can predict whether a person will or will not respond to a certain treatment. Often the treatments are tailored to certain DNA profiles.

What should trouble everyone is the alarming increase in the number of retracted articles occurring in the present context.

There is some jaw-droppingly good research being conducted today, but a small number of miscreants who muddy the pond for everyone. It's a constant part of our dinner conversation when my wife refuses to co-author a paper!

Thank you Ale, I'll wait for the print edition to come back in stock.

It's never really been in stock at least in North America, and given the publisher's performance to date the wait may be very long.

I finally knuckled under and got the Kindle version when Amazon finally canceled my book order after a five month wait.

FWIW I don't consider the Kindle version to be ultimately a replacement for the printed copy. I'm not crazy about the formatting and the diagrams and charts are small.. I read using Kindle for PC so I can't weigh in on how it looks on e-ink..

I think Reed Elsevier did an appalling job at releasing this ebook. I do own many other ebooks and unfortunately I have to admit this is the worst one in terms of quality and ease of navigation. The index is very limited for a book of this size as you have an entry for chapters only, so you need to add your own bookmarks to make it easier to navigate through.
Although being a great supportive of ebooks, in this case I'd recommend and wait for the paperback version. I also have the 3rd edition so can easily do a comparison in this case...

@SY: perhaps you can provide this feedback to Morgan Jones and he can influence Reed Elsevier to improve the ebook version?
Cheers,
Ale

The Mathematics Faculty at Technical University in Munich, Germany has canceled its Elsevier subscriptions in protest. TU Munich is one of Germany's elite universities. It seems that Elsevier has bigger problems than this one with Morgan's book.
