So how different is the 4th ed compared to the 3rd edition ? Worth the 60 bucks if one already has the 3rd edition ?

I tried to order on another web site. Wonder if they can really get it ?
Everyone else seems to be still having problems ordering it.

It seems the copy I just paid for is supposed to ship tomorrow, and I'm supposed to receive it in two weeks (why so long from Indiana to NY?). If I learn half as much from the 4th Ed as I did from the 3rd, I'll be one happy camper!

Seriously?

I don't get what you mean ! But ,yes ......seriously ! But this opinion can vary from person to person unless there is a lot that's new! SY has just clarified that.

However I'm still getting the new edition and will find out for myself. After reading SY's comment I have no doubt it will be worth it. 😉

My supplier claims an 8 day delivery period ! Wonder if they are being too optimistic .

You can read a blow by blow description in my review in the last issue of Linear Audio. Lots more on test and measurement, much more detailed information on noise, some novel capacitor measurements and capacitor designs, a new type of low noise regulator, a new low power push pull amplifier, shunt feedback modifications on the Crystal Palace...

Not necessarily. A publisher may decide to make a new edition just to boost flagging sales, so asks the author to make a few changes and add a bit of new material. Might be 5% changed, 5% new but the publisher can charge 110% while at the same time drastically reducing the second-hand price of the old edition. I'm not saying that has happened with this book, but it does happen.

Worthwhile for who and what? Pick one:

• New usable information?
• New cover to sell more copies!
• A combination of both of the above. Enough new information to “justify” a purchaser having 4 editions of the same title on the shelf.

My copy of the 3rd edition is falling apart.
Chase just called me to ask if I really just spent $72.00 at Amazon UK?

...well...I believe in contisnously improvement, not in this crap. Correcting some old errors and adding some new features which may be corrected in a later edition might be an appropiate business case in the IT business, yet it isn't in science or literature...does it is in hobby?
So I'll stick my second edition!
If Mr Jones has some new ideas he should publish a new title!

It finally boils down to getting some opinions and deciding if it's acceptable to ourselves for buying the book or not . Ultimately it doesn't matter at all as most things we usually buy are really wasteful in any case ! 😀

Personally I would say no, if you have the 3rd edition then you don't need the 4th edition, unless you're a real literature glutton like me. It does contain some new measurements which are academically interesting, but the ultimate conclusions and design guidelines are the same as those in the 3rd edition.

SY mentioned the new material on noise, but IMO it is not especially useful. It is mostly a review of some old papers that you can find online for free, and still has negligible discussion of the most important source of noise- flicker noise! I also think it is dangerous to try and extend data on electrometer valves to audio types...
Now I think about it, I am surprised he still hasn't included any actual measured data of noise in audio valves 😕

But if you only have the 2nd edition then yes, get the 4th.
