is the one I got

PS/Edith : well, so if yours was good, it is certainly a problem with a bad powersupply of my front end !

Not necessarily. In fact that would be the least logical explanation. It can be just a non optimal chip. That would be the most logical explanation when compared to other chips that performed OK according your tests. With a bad power supply of the "front end" the other one would also perform non optimal.

Secondly: why would a power supply suddenly be bad in a well built and well tested design that performed OK with another TDA chip ? Don't say "heavily and sloppy modded" please 🙂 If you use the original chip and sound is OK again it is hard to imagine the power supply is faulty.

PS: I removed a post of myself but maybe it is wiser not to publish numbers of original chips certainly of those with a Taiwan logo. A crown is easily stamped.

I will print a reversed crown on mine... or a crown of thorns ! I hesitate....

Well, there are tons of Taiwan chips picture on the Net, so not sure it changes things.

And Imagine tomorrow Philips re print genuine chips again !

With all this vintage fame, I don't understand why a guy hadn't the idea at Philips !

A Philips DAC with a base for IPhone 😀 , mp3, aac, et tout ça !

Edith (ma grand-mère) : I see it from here : The legacy Philips Sound !

Pffff their Young marketing boys could be able to print 3 crowns on a Sabre chip !

No I just didn't answer to avoid turning in circle ! And you even don't answer about telling if this number chip is known by you, although you never said such a thing here : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-source/32587-real-tda1541a.html

Frankly Aristote things are too complex for me ! My ears just says there is a problem with the three chips I got from ECEDESIGNS !

If not the batch I had, I surely don't understand why the bad sounds dac with them and sounding good with all the others I got from Philips CD players !

I believed it was because the extra clearness and resolving in the mid-highs, but if as clear than a S1, the Taiwan98 ia have instead sounds fatiguing & harsch in the mid-treble ! Clearly like odd harmonics ! My single crown from Singapor hasn't this issue in my DAC !

Maybe the girl is too pretty ! You know when a girl is too beautifull she is too fade sometimes ! My ears maybe don't deserve that one !

So when time I will sent the chip to a reliable person I know who have genuine stock for my own curiosity !

Thanks all for your help. End of the story !

A PM was all I asked. A link to a post from 2004 is not very helpful 🙂

Shortest path from A to B: If your sample is less OK then ask the seller to have it replaced. Try the replacement TDA (before sending the other one back) and only then draw a conclusion.

Time involved: 2 minutes. 1 minute for sending an email. 1 minute to replace the TDA if you used a IC socket. 2 minutes is less than the time involved maintaining this thread.

Hi Eldam,

I opened up my rebuilt Rotel RCD855 and plugged in one of my chips "#2" and listened for awhile last night and thought it sounded pretty good. Again at least as good as the OEM chip if not better. I now intend to try them, all, throughout the next couple of weeks.

I may not even have the ability with my equipment, or ears for that matter, to make such refined judgments. Is the music you hear fatiguing regardless of music type and overtly obvious?

I am curious about what you are listening to and if I could listen to it also and make judgments. Can you tell me the recordings you are listening to so I might try and recreate your listening experiences?

If there is no way to Scientifically measure these chips anymore, than you are beholden to your ears and personal perceptions. If you don't like what you have then get rid of them by some means. Surely you could recoup your money, provided you haven't damaged the chips, especially with the provenance of these chips by the company and people you purchased from.

Thanks,

Mark K.

Hi Markos,

Same results with any music ! But I always use also for serious test a wild catalog of different good and bad same reccordings from 15 years to test all my stuffs & Hi-Fi systems !

Just use reccordings you know, can be female vocal, piano ! It will drill your ears more easily on dynamiks, attacks... will be more fatiguing in the mid-treble instead an other chip like the one I have !

Have your chip the same number than mine above ? If yes Something should be wrong on my DAC ?! (the loudness tonal balance of this particular chip would highlight some problems I haven't heard before maybe !)

Rotel was famous with his circuit to make one of the very good CD player with the TDA 1541A. I believe it suffices to hear it !

A friend of mine pointed out than maybe I should not use 44/49 crystals with the red book material I use to listen ?!
Also an other member elswhere pointed out than my I/V first order filter has only 70 K Hz Low pass because I use a littlier resistor (1K insted 1k5) with the // 1n polystyren cap ! It may be possible also I use no earth in my living room, so the R-Cores traffo has no shielding between the primaries and the secondaries !

Anyway, I can tell a modern chip has no subjective more resolution than a TDA1541A in a proper DAC... even if Something may not good with the Taiwan I have or the DAC bad with it !

And so it's no a myth a S1 or a Taiwan TDA 1541A does further in resolution everywhere than a normal old grade from the 80s' in Europe ! While for thios last being sufisant for stunning results with musicality ! Music is not about hearing the 20 th teeth of the opera singer between the cello and the fly who was here by chance and catched by the reccording engineer !

All the three Taiwan I had from ECD... sounded the same : I tried them all before sending back the two which wasn't for me !

All the others non Taiwan chips I have from many different sources and CD players from Marantz/Philips sounds good ! The S1 (non Taiwan marked !) has the nearest sounding signature in clearness and timbers than this Taiwan 98 I have, but staying neutral in the mid-highs : clean, no subjectiv H3 feeling ! A little more resolved maybe in the bass and less fat in the mid-bass subjectivly at ears ! But my problem is not tonal balance : I know how to solve this easily 🙂

So I'm directly comparing my "#3" in the Rotel to my stock original Nakamichi CDC4A with S1, and they sound the same, no real difference to me and certainly no harshness. These are vastly different machines.

God I love the sound of these chips! Thank you Jean-Paul for the heads up on these I never would have known otherwise and would've missed out.

Thanks,

Mark K.

Not understanding ! It would help me to know if it's my batch and helps me ! (You are not the vendor and I don't know for the photograph ?! not on line anymore ! How I can check ?????? maybe ECDESIGN had several batchs ?!)

Do it by PM if you want ?

Check what ? He is the vendor and even didn't thanks me to return the several chips he sent me by error ! I don't ask you your numbers, damn !

Sorry, but WTF ?

I just ask you if your number which are ok for you (I'm happy for you & thanks to have checked yours but it just add to you not to me!) are the same or not than mine I given here to be transparent and help me to understand if it's my batch ort my DAC !

Damn when you asked elswhere and I helped you was less rude 😉 I helped (it was a question of payment to ecdesign if I remember correctly !)

Hi, I just noticed ECdesigns stopped production of TDA1541A based DACs and selling their stock. Many have experienced fake or restamped chips on Ebay so I thought it would be OK to point to ECdesigns as I know they have 100% original chips. It is better to spend money on the real thing without a crown than on a fake one with a crown. Enjoy the sound of the dutch invention TDA1541A 🙂 Right now I am hoping and praying we won't experience all the same with ESS DAC chips.

ES9023 chips with crowns stamped on them 😀
