Pffff !
PS : you know it's not about honnesty, etc ! John's staff sent me by error 3 chips and I paid from my Pocket to sent him the two I haven't purchased and which was for a NYC guy !
I can be wrong, or the chip, or all my hifi, but let's try to progress ! A Deming Wheel is not good if you are the only one to move it ! I don't say it was you who was bugged !

Aha, I see you like to solve "problems". Very constructive way of dealing with matters.
Edit: I see you edited your post with more irrelevant data. If the chips were bought and if they are faulty simply contact the seller and explain your problem. You tried chips that were not meant for you for 3 months before sending them back ?!?!

Let's not get out of line guys. Jean Paul perhaps you could
be a little generous to exchange a chip if Eldam had bought
bought it from you ? Just a little gesture hope that you don't
mind me saying.

Eldam did not buy them from me AFAIK as I sold these a very long time ago. If so I would have exchanged them without hesitation.
Since there appears no real data my answer to the question "Is TDA1541A Taiwan 1998 chip good ?" is:
Yes the 1998 Taiwan TDA1541A are good but some are more good than others.
😀

I bought mine from ECDESIGNS, and I have no doubt either than John is a reliable and honnest personn as well !
So once more it's not about people, ego, here .... there is no body to solve here, even in acid bath ! (but the chip !)

Which is worring me is I believed it was a problem with the front end (IanCanada & Cryteq XO), but even with a single Wave I/O which sounds smooth with its own crystals I have always this subjective harchness I haven't with the Crystal clear TDA 1541A crown S1 or the other older european TDA 80s' chips I get from Philips/Marantz CD players ! It sounds like odd H3 distorsion and drills my ears !
All was tested at iso perimeter !
Well, thanks J-P for the advices and testimonials, I think I'm on the good place to have testimonials. I have no ego to mistake myself if it is the case, not a problem of personn again, just a big disapointment ! Maybe some bad chips in the batch ! Dunno, but don't think it's about semantic as you pointed out !
Well if others have a better luck than me, I would be happy to understand what is wrong and if I made a mistake ! ANd frankly at ears the datas were as bad as a Wolkswagen diesel after a genuine control ! And 3 months of testing is serious enough to post and have a doubt, what ever it is !
PS : so the question should be : Had anyone a bad experience with Taiwann TDA1541A sold by ECEDIGN (it was just a post of Jean-Paul which adverted us here ECDESIGNS was solding Taiwan 98 1541A chips... never said I bought them from J-P... btw who know Nothing about psychology imho 😉... holyday soon for you 😀 ?)

I will be trying some chips I bought recently that are late 1997.
HBH9751 to be exact.
I have a Phillips DAC960 that I modified via the Audio Amateur pooge series many years ago. To this day it sounds good to my 62 Y/O ears.
I hope they sound nice, and are an improvement. If not, so be it.
You take your chances and live with the results.
The chip in my DAC now is the original made in 1987. Not an S1 or S2.

Maybe it is just this batch number I have ! Pedja Rogic and Thorten Loesch uses Taiwan TDA 1541A chips and there is no doubt their DACS are among the best soundind DACS of the market !
Really if not my chip (cause it works with all the others TDA I have and even a crown S1) I'm asking where the problem is (maybe I waited too much from it, and my speakers are Crystal clears : aluminium mid and tweeter, resolving sound but smooth usually : setuped for classical music & jazz)
@ Jean-Paul,
What are the TDA numbers you sold to ECDESIGNS, are there several numbers you sold to him ?

Why ? You didn't sell me the chip, it's not a private affair between us ?
And my original asking is to understand what is wrong with the chip I have ? I even don't know if it's the chip 100% but from my test I believe it is ! Just a big disapointment (you know about the hobbyst too big hopes we have sometimes !)
Be it the batch, all the Taiwaneese 98 from a particular date (which I doubt) , or my ears, etc, etc !
If you have a doubt for yourself, please, write here the numbers of the batch you had or the one you are sure to sound good !
It will be usefull for everybody to know if some production dates are better than others for instance ! Or maybe this chip is more reaviling than my other S1 or normal ones and showing some issues on my hifi ?!
All is on the table here, it's open ! It's not a commercial issue for me, so not about the 60 euros it costs me from my initial purchase and the two others TDA 1541A and several j-Fet which was not for me (the bill was for a NYC guy I mailed and I sent back with tracking shippment the not for me items to ECEDSIGNS ! As I never had news from them after my gesture I assume all is for the best !)
Well btw, nobody happy or disapointed either !😀... Seems to be a non interressant subject 🙁 !
Well I have others chips which sounds very good in my AYA II 2014 ! So not the problem of the month for me !
regards

I purchased five of these chips, based on the recommendation from jean-paul. I only tried one in a player and I didn't do intense listening but thought it was at least as good as the players original chip. The player is nothing special. I did not notice anything bothersome and I am sensitive to harshness, having listened to vinyl mostly.
I intend to learn about and build units utilizing these chips. I came recently to this chip and have a lot to learn but couldn't pass up the opportunity to own a few. I feel five is a reasonable number for my own purposes.
I am curious about the performance of these chips compared to previous non S versions at least.
It would be nice if anyone, with these chips, has or can measure and post real measurements or point the finger to this info since I've had no luck searching for it so far.
Is there anyone around or can anybody with some equipment measure these chips to compare to the references? Does this require some special testing equipment?
Does anybody properly or can anybody properly grade these anymore? Maybe an aftermarket grading with a different letter like Z1/Z2 or something, but some way of knowing where they really stand compared to earlier graded chips.
Thanks,
Mark K.

Thank you for the nice testimonial Markos,
What the number in white marked on the 5 chips please ?
About the S1 I have : It's more Crystal clear than the non S version I have (the non-S are smoother). S1 is clear and resolving but without subjcective harchness in the highs as I have with my non-S Taiwan 98 TDA1541A, so my OP of this thread !
The S1 has a subjective flat tonal balance in my system. I found it has more resolution in the mid and low end than the "normal" ones I have and a nicer treble as well. Subjectivly it has less the TDA1541A signature and is more forgiving but "glues" to the music (S1 doesn't looks like a dac chip ?! : both analog and liquid, like an excellent vynil platine but with more resolution !)
The Taiwan 98 I have has also a good resolution in the low but has a drilling to my ears in the mid-highs : looks like a lot to odd harmonics and subjective to climby highs ! With the good resolution it has in the low end, the wholes gives Something like a loudness but is immediatly harsch in the mid-highs ! That's not what some others say, but this is just my testimonial with this chip I have.

The chips I purchased are the exact ones that were pictured on ECDESIGNS website and they were fully pictured. If you purchased them from ECDESIGNS then you would know if you have the same numbers as me!
I have a player that has an S1 and someday I may pull it and compare.

Mark,
Was you the guy from NYC I emailed because I received 3 TDAs instead you (ans some sorted J-Fet) in september/october ?
Ah, I will check the ECDESIGNS web if there is the picture with the same number as your and I check if it's the same for me ! But at least it's the same year !
Anyway, thanks chimin in !

No, I was not. I live in Minnesota. The picture was removed some time ago. I strongly suggest you get in touch with ECDESIGNS if you have concerns about performance and received product. They can verify numbers for you also!
You are welcome!
Some time ago I recapped, with a few minor upgrades, a Rotel RCD855 for my cousin who enjoyed it very much for a few months in essentially stock rebuilt form. A couple of weeks ago we got together and socketed the DAC and installed one of his, purchased from ECDESIGNS (SAME NUMBERS AS MINE), and he is liking it better than the original in his player. He is somewhat critical of harshness and is not having issues with it.
Good Luck,
Mark K.
