I have owned and auditioned quite a few TDA1541 chips over the last few years including three genuine Dutch made S1 chips.
I agree with Eldam that there is a difference in sound character between a '98 Taiwan chip and a Dutch S1 but I don't agree that the older S1 is clearly superior, to me they just have different characters.
In my old CD player project (a highly modded Arcam Alpha 5) my favourite chip was a '97 Taiwan chip. I compared it to two Dutch S1 chips and the '97 had much better clarity and dynamics.
However, in my latest project (a highly modded Sony 337ESD) I find that that a pair of 1998 Taiwan chips are just a little bit forward, bright and fatiguing and that the original 1988 chips are smoother/warmer sounding.
As I understand it, improvements in manufacturing processes meant that the chips produced in the late 90's in Taiwan pretty much all met or exceeded the earlier S2 specification. I have no doubt that there is some truth in this, to me these chips have a more detailed and clean sound with tighter bass. Unfortunately if the rest of your system is a little on the forward side this extra detail can come across as being a bit fatiguing.
I guess comes back to the old conundrum that what measures as better doesn't necessarily sound nicer.

Im more suspicous that the problem comes from
the raw materials then anything else Mike.
For me even S2 doesn't sound that good to me

Could you have please a look at the font of my Taiwan chip please and especially the base tray of the number 1 on the taiwan chip which is not here (vs the others)

I just found this tread again and I see that I never replied to your question, sorry!
I just checked my stock and I have chips from 1994, 95 and 98 all with no base on the number 1.
My chips from 87 and 88 do have the base on the number 1.
I tried some 1998 Taiwan chips again recently and thought that they were more dynamic than 88 Dutch chips with better bass but also more forward/brighter. I can understand why you might find them harsh in the treble.
My advice is to try swapping some of the other components in your DAC to better compliment the sound of the 98 chips. For example if I use Elna Silmic II for the +/-5V and -15v decoupling positions the sound is warmer and smoother and if I use Oscons in the same position the sound is detailed but fatiguing.
I hope this information still has some use to you after all this time.
