Why not hornload the woofers then?I do know that the woofer has more headroom...its just the large mouth of the horn aids to higher direct energy and less room, even at 200hz, even at close listening proximity.
Like the Altec setups?
Or other classics...
(Onkyo GS-1)
(GIP 9700A)
Or like the Klipsch recently discussed...

There are many HF drivers that will do what you want, and many woofers that would work well with it. But whether you can realize your goal depends on your definition of whole spectrum. If that's 40-15kHz OK. If that's 20-20kHz probably not, unless you're prepared to toss a lot of money into the equation, and even then you still need DSP to get M2 results.
2x 4x15" FLH (1.6-1.8m length) in an untreated rectangular room iirc.
The Scan-Speak Ellipticor 38WE is good, but for € 1,600.00 (each) you could buy 11 pieces of this woofer last year:

AE TD15M & TD18H+.OP , what is your final drivers?
Regarding (mid) bass horns, I would consider the relatively short flh options myself.
The Klangfilm Euronor (Groß) on the previous page is perhaps the pinnacle.
These horns were crossed at 500 Hz. According to several experts, the large Klangfilm systems are better than the Altec/Lansing/WE equivalents.
I would take B. Doppenberg's calculations for a (Tractrix) horn mouth as a starting point.

I like the fact that they open up vertically and horizontally. Unlike some Altec with parallel walls.
One horn contour that I like a lot is the RCA 9462.

I assume so for the times and experimentally proved to myself it was definitely better overall than Altec's VOTT 'cost cutter' systems, again learning the hard way how to best them thanks to RCA/Harry Olson after the 'new' wore off both, but the trade-off of course was greater size, so no fooling Mother Nature 'flooby dust' claims from me.
An interim example of a relatively simple 2 way that complies with the thread title was recently introduced at T.H.E. Show in Long Beach and garnered appreciation from visitors.
It's comprised of 2360A horns with a 2452SL-H compression driver, bottom is 2268H driven by a built in 1KW ICEPower amp - fully active via a DBX Power Rack 2. The price is a ridiculous $55,000/pair, but a similar system can of course be realized for less than 10% via DIY.

- Is it possible to cover the whole spectrum, high SPL, low distortion with a 2-way?
