Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

what's D/M?

if Dual Mono - not possible, except using 1pcb/channel (sans one channel buffer and autoformer)

but, I cheated, in case of SE .......... :

  • shunt reg is damn good life source for loads, minimizing crosstalk
  • there are rails cap multipliers for each buffer, more than potent to actual job

Iron Pre for F4 - calc is simple, 12db as max fain for SE and fixed 6db of gain for Bal, so you can fire up your Korg B1 and do your calc

if resulting voltage swing is enough for you, more than OK .......... but Iron Pre will not make even a drop of F4's sweat ......... because they're simply not made for that

insert another autoformer in between Iron Pre and F4, or add another gain stage, in separte box

with or without autoformer in Iron Pre, your taste should decide

Yes. That was my 'guess' but as I embarras myself all the time I refrained from mentioning.

Agreed, you mentioned that and I ordered autoformer will install and will run other pre's built BA-3 high gain piggy back.

Even Balanced Iron Pre? Into bridged F4 and or MoFo? At 100W?

What pre will make MoFo and F4 sweat? I'm finishing up multiple pre's to stack, waiting for parts...

let teach you how to calc

take that nowadays sources are 2Vrms

then - Iron Pre SE is having gain of either +6db or +12db;

+6db=2V/V=2*
+12db=4V/V=4*

so, you have either 4Vrms or 8Vrms at output

Power is easily calculated :
P=Urms^2/Rload

so, 4Vrms gives 2W@8R, 8Vrms gives 8W@8R

math is same, be it SE or Bal - voltage is voltage and speaker doesn't care in which fashion you are conditioning signal

so, for Iron Pre Bal

find your souurce Vout, multiple by +6db, calc power from that voltage swing

say blindly that your bal source is shootin' 4Vrms out

4Vrms times +6db=8Vrms

gives 8W@8R

of course that you can easily calc what's happening if you insert autoformer (for SE) or xformer (for Bal) in between pre and amp

just multiply what's going from preamp with xformer gain and calc power from that swing

Any thoughts on implementation of a single passive input alongside the Iron Pre? Right now just planning to splice one pair of RCA inputs with the board outputs and connect both to the AVC input (sharing a single output). I have one setup where I prefer to use a passive AVC preamp, but I only need a single input (phono) for that. With other gear (F6, Aleph J), the multiple Twister inputs with various gain options will be useful. Not sure if anyone has any more clever ideas on having it both ways..
