Some old notes about Peerless India drivers
Fished out some old notes and put them up here. Hope they're of some use to some of you.

My thanks to you Tarun for the old notes you have provided, they sure are a great help 🙂 That image of the speaker boxes and the closeup of those kevlars left me drooling for sure 😀 . I can now imagine what you would have felt at the time u had the first glimps of these buties (although you have mentioned ur first sight love).
They realy are well finished and i am now very eager to get my hands on them.
I think i messed up with the number that jitubhai gave me (M13KH). It was M16KH.
Now i am waiting for my air core coils to come in, and thn i will travel to Delhi for the other parts of the XOs. I sent a mail to Roman and he sent me a nice layout of the XO components, realy a great help from Roman, things have now eased up for sure, I will go for the veneer it will take time and test my patience but i have opted for vaneer. Dont want to sit back and repent in future thinking i would have gone for the veneer.
I i hope my cost comes a lil bit on the lower end as i know a labour charges in a metro cities like Mumbai, Banglore or Kolkata must be bit higher than what i will be paying here in Ludhiana. But sure will have to look for a good carpenter who can make the edges of everything meet at its best.

Yes, the labour costs here are certainly high. And I pay a bit higher than even the normal rates in Bombay, because I've found a good carpenter, and I want him to work leisurely knowing that his profits are taken care of. He's a 50+ year-old Bihari from Begusarai, and a wonderful workman.Originally posted by kamal6767 I i hope my cost comes a lil bit on the lower end as i know a labour charges in a metro cities like Mumbai, Banglore or Kolkata must be bit higher
Yes Tarun for a nice finished speaker box you need to have a realy good and and handy carpenter, No doubt he will charge high but the outcome will not hurt that overpaying, The picture of the kevelars in the speaker box ( the round rear boxes) has done wonders to me, My home minister ( mywife) who was a lil reluctant on me spending so much on my speaker system had her eye balls popping out as well when she saw the speakers close up the wording was " agar ese bana sakte ho to theek hai" (if you can make like these then its ok). That was pleasing to hear cus kinda income i generate and the household expenses its hard for me to save money but we do save some. So it will take time to build them. I will take step by step construction. My past experience will help me as i have had cutting of the MDF and ply done from a cutting shop with precision. The inner bracing will be done by me as i can do some handy wood work (not as the carpenters do in acuracy but can cut pieces to the size given with ease, my father had given me some tips when i was young how to run the saw on the wood and that has helped all these years with cutting in a very strainght line) and then i can glue them up myself as i have done with many of my previous boxes made with accuracy. The bracing will be a new experience and i hope i will do it good. That saving will go into the vaneer workmanship and polishing. I hope i find a good carpenter just like Tarun's Hiralal ji and a good polish man.

These are the four drivers that were bought by me on ebay in 2006 have fiberglass cone, they cost me 70$, now lying with my younger brother in USA. I did not bother to know about the specs of these VIFA 6.5 drivers but after coming to this site and meeting all you people i think i need to have the specs of these drivers and i intend to use them.

Hi Tarunda
Wanted to know how the 45 degree cuts were given to the cabnet. Did the carpenter cut the wood manualy or you have it done from somewhere e.g. a saw operating place.
Its interesting to visit markets and find out new wood stuff that is out in the market. One good stuff is wood floor planks that i found. Nice wood finish on 1/4 inch of HDF that was intereting. The man is willing to give me some planks @ 60 sq foot.

Which 45-deg cuts?kamal6767 said:Wanted to know how the 45 degree cuts were given to the cabnet. Did the carpenter cut the wood manualy or you have it done from somewhere e.g. a saw operating place.
I don't see why anyone would do such a thing, when you can just join them face to face without any complex cuts. I definitely did not use 45-deg joints. I even made a simple drawing to show you what a 90-deg joint is like, but the posting screen is reporting an error with my PNG file, without telling me the nature of the error. I tried thrice. Now you'll just have to figure it out without a figure.kamal6767 said:The sides and top bottom panels that are cut to 45 deg to join them
Dear Kamal,
I think Butt joint is the best and simplest option as mentioned by Tarunda

Yes, a straight butt joint, even without the wood strip, would do just fine. You'll need the strip of wood if you're butt-joining two sheets of ply, because ply tends to split if you drive nails/screws into it edgewise. But since most speakers are assembled with MDF, this problem doesn't show up. (The Asawari was assembled entirely out of marine ply, and screws were driven into those sheets edgewise, but with some care and lots of Araldite, we avoided any split ends.)
Well Tarunda many of the speakers i have seen have that kind of cut and joint even my small speakers that i bought from the local market and are china made have the cabnets pannels cut and glued like that
Hello Somak
Thanks for the reply, yes thats the way i use to join the panels the simplest way,i thought something speacial was there in those speacialy cut and joint panels, thought may be some more regidity than the simple way. But thanks for clearing that for me. Previously wheneven i used to make the boxes they went offline somewhere, may be the cutting of the wood was not ok or not in a straight line.
Yesteday i found a person who has a router cutter will charge 10 buks per hole.

I have a deficulty, now that i have planned to use a 3/4 inch of MDF and added another layer of 1/2 inch of MDF that will make 1.25 inch of MDF and i think will make a strong cabnet. After that i plan to glue the 1/4 inch of HDF plank on the top, which has a nive vaneer finish on one side and some shiny stuff on the other side that will be taken off by sand paper. Now making the edges come to meet each other correctly and evenly is a tough job and to realy join good. I met a couple of carpenters today and saw their work. Non had any inspiring work.
If you abandon your ideas of a 45-deg joint, then it's a very easy job of making edges meet, even if you have this multi-layer construction as described. This is the reason that the Asawari looks the way it does... it may not look very appealing or elegant, but it is a very practical design to construct, and addresses all the challenges of building a dead cabinet using carpentry skills commonly found here.kamal6767 said:Now making the edges come to meet each other correctly and evenly is a tough job and to realy join good. Hello Tarunda
I really appreciate on you giving me advices. I will surely leave the idea of the 45 deg. I have been thinking hard how to have the job done cus i am a man who goes in details i want a nice perfect finish on my speakers and if that wants that i leave the 45 deg idea i am happy to leave it. And tarunda Asawaris are really a very appealing speaker cabinet, i have not seen anyone giving that much of importance to cabinet building, i have seen on net many projects and ppl just put some bracings and done with the cabnets, but you have given a lot of thinking and i realy admire your working hard on that area of speaker building. If your Asawaris were not there i would have never ever would have thought that my dream of building a nice speaker system come true. Well today my sis in law came from the USA and she surprisingly was able to carry the 8 drivers that I had won on the bid on ebay. These are sony SS MH600 speakers. 4 8inchers, 2 midrange and 2 tweeters, someone broke the cabinet of the speakers and sold all the drivers on ebay. Luckily I won, the drivers are kinda ABS basket and nice poly cones. As for crossover just one cap for midrange and one cap for tweeter and drivers have straight connection 🙁 , was3thinking of a nice cross over but was disappointed to see just two caps. After so many years (20 years or so) I have had my hands on some good speakers. I am lucky didn’t had to pay any duties or shipping charges just 70 $ for the set.

Peerless India Kevlar cones no longer available
I have failed to obtain any Kevlar cone 6.5" Peerless India drivers, which I had used for the Asawaris. The entire supply chain seems to have dried up... I tried up and down the chain. So the original Asawaris can no longer be made by any new builder.
Then I contacted Corrson, hoping to use their Vifa TC18 drivers as approximate replacements for the Peerless India Kevlars. Corrson said the TC18 drivers are out of stock and will never be replenished because Vifa has stopped making them. I asked about the (more expensive, better built) P17 drivers, and they said even those are out of stock.
Now I have a pair of enclosures for Asawari Mk II for which I do not have drivers. I will have to find four 6.5" drivers of approximately usable T/S parameters, or else the enclosures will go waste.
I've learned my lesson. You should not build anything in India until you first have all the parts for your entire construction.
