I'm pulling up stakes in the Windows camp, dual-boot Linux as step #1

"Windows Latest reports that the KB5002700 update for Office 2016—both Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions—is reportedly causing several apps in the suite to crash. Users on Reddit are reporting that Word and Excel crash when they try to create new documents and spreadsheets. Opening the calendar view in Outlook also causes that app to crash.

Microsoft hasn’t yet posted anything about the problems on the update’s support page. And given that the software is almost 9 years old now, it may not be a top priority for the company......

If you’re still using Office 2016 and affected by these issues, you’ll have to wait for Microsoft to push another patch—but who knows how long that could take. Alternatively, you can upgrade to either Office 2024 or a Microsoft 365 subscription."

I guess they forgot about some of us. Yes, they both work with W10. Have not tried them on W11. Office 2019 does work on W11.

Well ... the root is actually a QC issue at best. At worst, they are pushing everyone to the subscription model. Software as a service. With the updates I've experienced lately I am positive it is a mixture of the two. They, as a company, are not technically competent enough to support what they are attempting to do.

I suffered another update last night. Standard nonsense this morning getting everything running including a system reboot. Then I had to go in and swat their browser down. I am so sick of the lost time involved just to keep stuff that worked fine running.

What we need is a class action suite against Microsoft for lost time and expense related to their poor quality software. That would probably bankrupt them.

If I need to leave something running overnight, I yank the ethernet cable or shut off the multiport switch between the modem and the PCs so that MS can't get to the machine. I always go to MS update to make the machine current before letting an experiment run unattended. That way the machine has no reason to "call home" and MS can't ask it to.

I wish I could do as you do. My backup is on the 'net, and I connect to equipment on the bench via Ethernet.

I wonder if I could block the M$ domain, they will have a range of IP addresses and I can't block them all. I would have to turn it on and off since I need access to the darned MS account for unrelated programs. Grrr! I need to run a nightly batch file, and another every morning in that case. I don't want to do it manually every time.

Just last night, no bluetooth on my w10 "half". No icon, no option to turn on otherwise. Says on line I must not have a driver for it installed. Noticed an update ready, selected install now. After watching their clock pattern spin again and again after roboot, when it comes back there's BT. Connected ok.

So instead of spending a relaxing 1/2 hour before turning in watching a couple-few YT videos, I spend it "getting the computer to work". Nice.

I've thought of the above; take that idea back to the 'ol hard drivespace/doublespace drive compression fiasco, multiply all the hours since then people have wasted "getting the computer to work" over a couple decades, times some percentage of the planet's population, then assign a reasonable $/Hr value - I wonder what you'd get for a "number"?

Design Verification Test? Let our customers do that for us. It's digital and worked once; should be just the same everywhere and on everything.

I am a complete non-microsoft user, but saw something about some way office licenses can be shared with family that failed leaving the family members out in the cold last night. Really I have to wonder sometimes how often people have to get smacked before they go somewhere else like open office. It may not be perfect but at least you know what it is.

It did it again, exact same scenario, no BT icon after a days ordinary laptop use, reboot necessary, then its back.

M$ circa 2023 advice from the web "Click the arrow next to Bluetooth to expand it, then right-click on the Bluetooth Radio > select Properties. Go to Power Management tab and make sure to uncheck the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

There is no "Power Management tab" in any relevant sub category properties under BT in the Device Manager. Once it gets put off, you're done until reboot. Maybe removed option to not turn it off to save power. Makes one wonder if they're deliberately trying to drive everyone crazy...

My machine is a desk top and I have pretty much the same BT problem. I'm told the computer isn't compatible with BT. Sure. In my case I have external USB WiFi and BT radios attached. Once it fails, at times I can unplug and reinsert the BT radios to get it working, other times I also need a reboot. At times you can forget it for the day.

One thing I know for sure, it is not a hardware problem. My Linux box never has these issues.

Another interesting difference - that maybe has nothing to do with the OS - is that - I swear - I was browsing guitar straps on ebay, adding them to my "watch" list and none were showing up there; Firefox on Linux Mint. Frustrated, I shut down and rebooted the W10 half, went to ebay again on Firefox, started adding strap listings to my watchlist. This time, they showed up.

Isnt it marvelous how consistent computing experiences can be, even for the most trivial of functionalities. /s

It is possible to get some differences between results on a web site based on the string the browser sends to the website. I am surprised at what you are seeing. Usually ads are different. Does the mint firefox have NoScript enabled or some other option that is not enabled on windows? That would be what I would expect here.
