I'm still wondering how it can be that just one resistor of a pair overheated while they were both in series.
Unless a test probe slipped sometime somewhere ;-)

yes, probe slips really really do happen, who knows? maybe that really took place...use of clip types are better...
several suggested to take voltage readings across those resistors, could it be the OP did not understand how to go about this?
The last time this happened to me I replaced the caps then received a notice in the mail two weeks later from Mouser that the caps were incorrectly spec'd and the manufacturer is being sued in a class action lawsuit.
