I want your opinion on a nearfield listening build

I like the Dayton's PS-95's on mids highs. much more than mark audio ( a loved driver on this forum ). Cheap but nice built quality drivers .

Excellent!

One channel phone-recorded and then compressed by video-sharing site so maybe 1/5 sound quality remained.

I've head these Dayton point source drivers hit way above their price point.

I have spent part of the evening listening to my two ways VS my 3 ways and hearing the difference I cannot go ahead with any 2 way I'm going to spend significant time listening to.

Has to be 3 way. I can't go back

@Bmsluite initially I wanted to build a 3 way for my desktop.
5.25 or 6.5" woofers , these 3.5 daytons and some silk tweeters crossed at 4khz or higher. With separte box for each driver like Focal did . Maybe I'll make them one day .
About the daytons personally I find them very detailed , smooth , clear on the mids . Highs are maybe a tiny bit " to in your face " to say so. But still good sounding. Mark audio sounded dull in comparision.
Maybe some nice soft silk tweeters will improve the rs95's even more.I have to try a 3 way on my existing speakers.
Yes the dayton's are nice , especially for their price . Tho , I'm sure there are better drivers for your build out there and in that price range.

Interesting you show this because I was thinking about decoupling the drivers like this. If the lows are going to be handled by a 6.5 sub then I imagine putting a dome mid or a planar mid on top of that vibrating box isn't going to be very good for the response of the mids. Better I decouple it somehow.

What exactly you find " better " so it makes you not want a 2 way anymore. ?
Only thing going through my mind about a 3 way would be: higher x point on the tweeter , less distortion. lower x point on the woofer , avoiding cone breakup .

Bruno,

A 3 way plays the lows so clean and so tightly. The mids aren't torn to pieces everytime it hits a low note.

A driver playing vocals just isn't going to hit that 40 Hz tone the same way.

Nina Simone's "Bang Bang" played on the 2 way and then the 3 way might as well be two different songs

Retsel,

I have those in my shop pool room already. They are incredible. I have them in a box with two 8" ports and they do slam.

What's with the curved plate in from of them?
They are a version of Karlson speakers. The curved diffusers partially covering the drivers reduce cone movement (making the speakers 6th order bandpass) reducing distortion and lowering the frequency achievable by the drivers.

So since you’ve settled on a 3way for desktop near field use, you’ve defacto settled on a dome type midrange then. Let me share something with you

As an engineer, I’ve spent many critical hours of listening to mixes through the ATC dome……considered by most to be the finest midrange device ever. And in the near field, it is in fact very clear and revealing……..of everything….and I don’t mean in a good way for listening for the sake of enjoyment. Step away into the mid field and the issues are mitigated ……but in the near field?……the ATC will expose every flaw…….and most recordings are flawed……very flawed. Best you know now what you’re getting yourself into……dome midranges in the near field are a clinical application.

Mayhem,

Good to know. I know that is an aspect of my living room 3 way. Some tracks that are recorded poorly are hard to listen to on that system. You realize that not recording is created equal.
The flip side of this is recording that are done very well sound amazing
