Interesting.Next up is to get my hands on a Nilai amplifier to compare.
I don't want to seem pushy, but is the lack of response due to the fact that RCA/XLR adapters were used in the listening session?@Flaxxer
If possible, I would also like to know about the signal connections type.
Just to get a nail off my mind. 😉
Thanks.
I say it just because, if that were the case, it could be one of the elements likely to cause the poor result to your ears.
Let me know. 🙂
So just get a “generic amplifier”, apply Eigentakt transfer function and you’re done!Bob Carver pretty much solved "amplifier sound" as being distortion.
His amplifier challenge showed that adding distortion in varying amounts to a generic amplifier, he could recreate the specific sound of other amplifiers :

Shame for Bruno who could have saved the last twenty odd years of his wasted life 😢

Carver added distortion to match the other amplifier. Eigentakt amplifiers distortion is so low, you cannot easily lower another amplifiers distortion to be below the Eigentakt, and then add distortion.

Rather, he (primarily) added output impedance (with resistors) to his cheaper solid state amplifier, so it would have the same kind
of interaction with the speakers as the expensive tube amplifier. No surprise that the two amplifiers would sound more similar.
But that added linear distortion is hardly the only reason amplifiers sound different. And with an essentially resistive speaker load,
such as Magnepans, this approach would fail.
Well yes, that’s rather the point I was making…Not possible.

Amplifiers with extremely low distortion and straight frequency response usually sound very neutral and play the recording as they are, meaning they are just amplifying the sound. That got me thinking, that the favorite sound for certain type of distortion loving audiophiles could be also attained using a that kind of an excellent amplifier and then just adding the exact copy of the desired distortion artificially to the signal chain. Now with the advanced digital technology, it should be possible.
In other words, if someone always requires some specific addition, for example this and that tube sound,, so when you really think about it, it means the recordings they listen, are not actually originally recorded at the studio to their taste at all, since they never sound good with any neutral system, but always need to be colorized first.
There is nothing wrong with that of course, since if most people prefer the altered sound, I see that as a more like a failure of the mastering engineer being not able to please the crowd.
However, it is of course possible that older, low resolution music recordings simply could not contain all the nyances and wide spectrum of details distortion can have. Perhaps that's one factor that feeds into this long lasting confusion.

The pure sound it simply does not exist. Just Google exciter and you will see a plethora of gears that many and myself as well use in studio while mastering audio. Those exciters add harmonics that does not exist in the guitar of the player or in the mic of the singer. The quest for pure audio is almost a mission impossible.
My 2 cents

Aaaah ... the wonderful "spec".
Remind me how it sounds again, please?
We could discuss this for decades. The technical side is of zero importance to me.
When a component is placed into a system, and the magic goes away, with 3 different preamps, two different front ends, and 3 different DACs ...
That's everything I need to know.
Cables and connectors weren't an issue. We had slews on hand.
In the meantime, I was fortunate to be able to acquire another pair of matched BEL monoblocks.
Lastly, my "silence" has been due to preparing to move 1300 miles across the country. And I'm building a pair of speakers for the friend who traded those BEL amplifiers to me...

Nice speakers, do you already know when you're compare to Nilai?Aaaah ... the wonderful "spec".

Hi. If you're asking when I can compare the BEL amplifiers to Nilai amplifiers, it may be soon 😉.
I picked up two more mint BEL amplifiers last week, and I'm checking them thoroughly now.
I have plans on selling them $1000 cheaper than is normal... and purchasing a pair of Nilai monoblocks for a huge shoot-out, with a dozen audiophile friends.
So when you see the two newly listed matched BEL amplifiers sell online, you'll know the Nilai amplifiers are on the way to me for a shoot-out 😉.
I'm literally willing to lose a thousand dollars, just to find out first hand.

I was ecstatic to drive 8 hrs to pick these BEL amplifiers up in beautiful Half Moon Bay a couple of days ago.
I'll use the matched 1001 Mk5s for the double blind testing.
I now have too many BEL amplifiers 😆. I'd have bet the farm and laughed, if you'd have told me that was possible about 5 years ago. I went 7 years waiting for one to come available, some years back!
Of course, it's easier when you get to purchase 3 from one seller 😉.
So now I'm open to advice from you.... I plan on using Nilai monoblocks for the comparison, but what would you suggest me purchasing, exactly? I want to allow the Nilai to perform as well as the amps can. If they compete evenly, I'm keeping them!
As much as I love the BELs, having a closet with 6 of them, and two in your listening room takes up a TON of space! I'm searching for their replacement, to save room and not need to keep extras as a future proof plan Thanks
