How to really annoy people. My study in pictures.

The SS 2904-9500 is a superior tweeter to the D27TG35 (45 uses different faceplate). Older version of Vifa D27TG35 had ferrofluid. The D2606-9220 is said to be the better Scan Speak equivalent to the current chinese Tymphany D27TG35. I would try the 9500 instead but some crossover tweeking would likely be needed.

The Seas Millenium could has been nearer from the original and has a strong Xmax, not the 0,1 mm of the 9500. Unfornatully Seas became mad and sell it 400 euros today for an average distorsion profile. The price took more than 200 euros in less than 10 years which is not justified...better to avoid there are better cheaper choices

The 20 euros peereless 25dxtg looks very similar to the original Seas datasheet wize at least and has good thd.

I, and I suspect, many others have really enjoyed some of you destroying yourself over this 🙂

Should I put you all out of your misery ?
Or should I annoy some to the point of utter disbelief ?
Ohhhhhhhhhh ok then.

Friend recently bough these Dunlavy SC III speakers.
He had them delivered to me as he was away for work.

On arrival they were given a thorough check over.
They sounded awful. And I mean really really awful.
Quick listen to each driver revealed one dead tweeter that was measured as being open circuit.
As others have said and know, these are Vifa D27TG35, Very easy and cheap to get replacements here in Australia.
Owner and I had several discussions about what to do.
I had a pair of SS 2905-9500 on the shelf which after looking at spec sheets and response curves etc, seemed like a really good match but better.
It was decided to put these in as an interim as there was nothing to lose.

To keep things even I swapped out both.
Way better than the vifas.
Far smoother, more extended, far less issues with the lower end.
Friend finished his contract and came over to have a listen.

They still just did not sound right.
I looked at the crossovers, and by look I mean fully disassembled.
Every part was tested using my $800 b&k LCR meter.
That explains the bass inductors cut lead.
Everything tested fine.
I decided to upgrade all the parts.
I Hate solen caps, I Hate bennic resistors, Some of the inductors were hand wound and had loose windings.
I didn't like the 0.56DCR of the bass inductor (Which is over the general 10% of driver to inductor DCR that is often quoted as acceptable).

I used Jantzen Standard-Z caps (the little black one is a Cross-Cap as Standards don't go that low)
Jantzen Superes resistors.
Jantzen air cores that if required I unwound to the exact inductance of the originals (to the 4th decimal place).
The DCR is within a few percent of the originals.
The only deviation was the bass inductor which is now a C-core at 0.07DCR

The end result is an absolute revelation.
So much smoother and cleaner through out the entire range.
Far tighter bass with more depth and control.

My friend came back and had another listen and was astounded at the improvement.
They are now at his place being fully enjoyed as they should be.

I know there are those that will hate me for life with what I have done.
But they sound so much better so I really don't care what the internet thinks.
Other than watching the explosion of some peoples heads 😛

It is after all what my friend thinks that matters.

Feel free to continue all the arguments and hating 😀
What puzzles me a bit.... going through all of this, did you ever consider replacing that awkward single-sided PCB and the equally awkward cable tie fastenings to PCB with something more adequate?
I'm aware that HiFi speakers may not see the same rough handling and operating conditions that PA speakers will see but IME this type of XO construction is a fail-safe repair timer... it will break, sooner or later...

Well you certainly didn't tell that story in the beginning...all on purpose I presume to fit your name of "UserAbuser"...?????

So one dead tweeter...& the possibility of the caps aging.......other than spending money on replacing the cheap resistors I think it would have been better spent on removing the big block of metal that is/are the binding posts.....one thing which only a few speaker makers actually address...

Compared to most Dunlavy certainly did proper research/testing....

Pano, I do apologise to you if my post came across as trying to troll.
It was not meant that way.
I just know that there are those (as in all walks of life) that disapprove of what others do.
I was hoping that by proceeding the way I did would help others to have a chance to express their views then calm down so we can all have a rational conversation.
Looking through this thread, this seems to be accurate.
Just like a lot of others here, I purely posted this as I thought some might like to see photos and information on what others have done to their speakers.
Especially since dunlavy owners are terrified of showing what they have done due to the exact thoughts that may or may not have been demonstrated in various audio sites.
I don't remember seeing threads about almost any other brand being discussed in such a manner.
I did these speakers a month ago.
I waited, and thought hard before posting as I knew it would stir things up.
Isn't it sad that some withhold their passion because of potential ridicule.
I'm just sick of the few ruining it for the many.
I will now get of my soap box and hope everyone can just accept others for what they are and understand that not everyone considers brand xyz as a universal god to all.
