How better is a Turntable compared to a CD?

Unfortunately, for your own personal information sir, it is true

I've been to a vinyl record pressing facility a couple of times in pre-cd times, professionally, no mold release agents.
There are plenty of videos on LP manufacturing on the web which clearly demonstrate it, a couple from the late '50s and early '60s.
If mold release agents were not required back then, they sure are not needed for current vinyl record production.

In the LP era, old vinyl was recycled, as in the glass industry and in the aluminum casting business.
For glass, adding 10% recycled glass saves costs, but also leads to a higher quality than in the case of 100% new glass.
Same deal for the aluminum foundry story (worked in both).

Not so for vinyl records, re-use of edge residual of pressed LP's still counts as all-new compound, but mixing recycled old vinyl with fresh granulate lowers the quality of the finished product.
Only reason for doing it was to cut corners, and some record manufacturers mixed in a very large percentage of recycled vinyl.
Which resulted in a large spread of vinyl quality, back in the '70s I could easily determine the purity of a record by the scent (one acquires a nose for plastic by growing up between granulate cannisters).

Also lead to peculiar records, I had a specimen with a small round wart/bubble right in the middle of a song, about 1.5mm height.
Fortunately an SME 3009-SII had no problem to ride across the bump without jumping off the track, fun to observe every time.
Only reason I can think of for a wart on an otherwise perfect record, is sticking on opening of the mould, and bad quality of the vinyl biscuit.
Afaig, current vinyl record manufacture uses 100% new granulate.

Vinyl granulate/compound has additives to improve the behavior during/after the molding, but those operate on a molecular level.
Vinyl and a lot of other thermoplastics feel greasy right after the molding, not grease, but a material characteristic.
Leave the finished product in open air a couple of days and the feel will be dry, but basically what is felt is deposited dirt/dust.

IIWY, I'd listen to Dr Cork.

(back in the late '70s, I made the first PET bottles and twist-lock caps in Europe for Coca Cola, before they became available in the stores. Various pretty scars by molten plastic, glass, and aluminum burns)

I Don't understand your question. Are you asking why should a $5K cart be better than a $300 Denon? Don't know......why is this better then mine?

Goldfinger = golden pick pocket. Yes this is much better at unburdening you of money you don't need for anything else.

None of these perform any better than Grado carts in $200-$300 range.

None of these perform even close to digital.

@BW: That assumes a sacrificial release (which is the unstated assumption for claims of mold release on the surface); the release would also have to be resprayed on every cycle, and that's some major cost and impact on production rate.

If it's a semipermanent mold release, there's essentially no transfer. It would be nice if they used semiperms, I could sell them product.😀 They don't, so I don't. Sacrificials are pretty much confined to marginal operations these days, and again, no-one pressing vinyl or PC discs would use them. Internal MR is a different story, but that's a highly dispersed additive to the molded compound and, as I said, removing it would be very difficult, accomplish nothing, and ruin the product.

Mold release maybe the wrong term , for sure there is some kind of surface gunk on some records even when from sealed jackets ....

Best picture I have found yet, looks like the same thing I have seen on a few of my new records.

Turntable Forum • Have To Clean Brand New Lp, Possible Big Problem.

More delusional people here to dismiss.

Turntable Forum • Residue on new vinyl

I know the people who see no evil, speak no evil etc will simply ignore these links and say we are all delusional. But I posted them anyway in case someone on here comes across this issue and is actually interested enough to check it out.

This is probably a complete waste of time, it's going round and round like a record so i'll make this my last post on this issue.

Wont happen here means, I will not spend $5000 on a cartridge. Maybe maximum $ 1000,-, wen I discover the best sounding cartridge ever for 1000,- .

I will try the DL103 do a rebody maybe do some time retip to Shibata. And the listen what the end result will be.

You know I have this recurrent nightmare where this alien ship comes in earth orbit and they start to eavesdrop our comms to decide whether we are an intelligent species yet.
Through some freak statistical fluke, this thread is the first thing they read.
What saves us from immediate and total eradication from the galactic gene pool is their incredible sense of humor, so they just leave and make a note in their calender to check again in another million years. Or two 😉

Jan

And when they come back, they will find this everlasting thread full of promissing quotes.

Not all aliens are bad... some might even like turntables 🙂

Shibata tip contact service to the right.

I gave a link for the DL103...

A lot of TT, tonearms & cartridges bad adjusted out there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bingo ...!!!!

When I recommended the DL-103 I was not specifically recommending that anyone send a good one out for retip. Also in terms of rehousing the cartridge the housing needs to fit the cartridge assembly very snugly.

My concern revolves around the mass of replacement cantilevers in common use and their effect on HF resonance. (Boron is OK, Ruby not so much)

Listen first with stock stylus, change later if warranted.. IMHO..

The ZU DL-103 is probably the fourth best cartridge I have used, the other three are SPUs. I had the original Grado Reference Platinum which I found seriously lacked dynamics and was excessively polite on an SME 3009 series II with the S2 head shell which was installed on a TD-125/I. Bad match despite competent tracking, but the head shell which is full of holes probably also contributed. Overall it was rather murky sounding and almost ended my vinyl affliction, the ZU rescued me after the selection of an appropriate higher mass head shell and some other changes to the arm. (Remove those grommets in the bed plate!)

Is this all abot money ?

How can you guys discuss the sound of a cart or TT or other contaption based only on it's cost ?

I did not follow this thread from the beguinning, but seldom I get comparisons like ( xxxgrand CD versus xxx grand TT).

It seems quite strange.

Following this line of thoughts, I would have the best sounding system on the planet as I have 300000E speakers, 400000€ power amp, 500000€ preamp, 759000€ phono preamp, 800000€ cdp and the TT I will not disclose it's cost.
