That's the problem- lots of rumor (nearly all audiophile-sourced), not much reality. LP vinyl compounds simply don't need mold release, so it's unclear why anyone would need any. And even more surprising that if they did, it's escaped my notice (this is what I do for a living).
Makes sense to me.. 😀 All my recent new purchases were pretty clean. Recent paper jackets can be an issue (paper dust??) so I generally replace them with the rice paper and plastic ones from mo-fi.
SY it was an article in HIFI World a few years back, they did a walk through interview with quite a few pictures of the plant and it's equipment. They detailed the pressing process and yes they did mention what the release agent was, a wax solution of some kind. I wish I could remember which plant it was but it looked like a working museum. Ancient equipment, filthy premises with dust and detritus all over the place. Oh and pools of releasing agent on the filthy concrete floor, swarf all over the place from trimming off the edges of records. I wish you could have read it, I swear it would have made you laugh your socks off mate, it really would. I wish I hadn't chucked all those magazines out now. The guy they spoke to thought it was hilarious that they re-opened the plant without as much as sweeping the floor, it looked positively third world.

That would not be a terribly reliable source.
If you WERE to formulate a vinyl release, wax is about the last thing you'd use. Chalk it up to an audio magazine chimp not quite understanding what he was told.

That is always a possibility when I think about some of the glowing reviews they give some manufacturers kit. Distortion of the third order harmonic type only seems to get praise from them but then they exist purely to sell copy and help their advertisers sell more gear. Not exactly unbiased especially when they regularly get to keep a lot of the kit they review from certain suppliers.
@ kevinkr I agree re Amazon, I've had quite a few bad pressing from them in the last year. Even worse, a couple were presents for the missis, that really annoyed me. I found discogs quite recently but I've had to put record buying on hold for a bit because i'm spending the money on diy kit at present, amps etc have taken priority for the time being.

I bought a stack of soft plastic liners from epay at the start of the year. When I get a good pressing I stick it in one of those. The records I get from amazon always have rough paper inners and I can feel them abrading the vinyl as I remove it. For all the extra it would cost you would think they could supply a decent inner sleeve 😡
HOW TO CLEAN VINYL LP RECORDS - DIY Liquid/Keith Monks/LORICRAFT/Knosti - STORAGE - Correct WARPS
Here is a link to an article about Keith Monks record cleaning machine which is quite popular over here. If you scroll down a bit, there's a section headed - Do new records need cleaned. It mentions a residue it calls pressing oil/fat, it doesn't explain why such a substance is used. I believe this may be what I have been describing as some sort of waxy residue, frankly I am baffled as to why it would be needed in the first place. Should a new album not be clean to start with anyway 🙄

Maybe 64/1536 may put this all to bed , absolutely not 16/44 , 24/96 or 24/162 ...
Still arguing formats when its all in the implementation?😕
Hi Helmuth,
I've not heard the DL-103R in my system, but have heard it in other systems. I would probably go for a standard DL-103 and rehouse it, depends on budget I suppose. The claims are that the R has more refined highs while retaining the character of the original DL-103, I think if money is tight that getting the standard DL-103 and rehousing it is the better choice. Note that there is some risk in rehousing - Thomas Schick has a good video on how to proceed. Numerous choices of bodies on eBay and there is (was?) a good one available from a member at Lenco Heaven.
That's what I had for several months. 103R with Midas body, sapphire cantilever and paratrace diamond, so the complete works.
I think that something like that costs $350 for retipping, $100 for body and$400 for cartridge itself.
So what is that!?...close to $1000. Is that even competitive?
I can tell you that my ZYX 4D with paratrace diamond is probably 10 times better. It is $4100 cart plus $600 retipping, so true, it is almost $5000 but, still, difference is so unbearable to make me wonder!!
Also comparing the same Denon to a $1000 Ortofon there is not as much difference as with mine, but still they are in two different legue. The Ortofon is more delicate and neutral, with a very fine texture.
Modified Denon instead, is not as tonal balanced nor as fine textured.
@Abraxalito,
No argument there, until i hear it sound better i can state so , the recordings done on 24/192 sounds closer to analog than any previously , so the future looks bright..
Waiting ...

Dl103 sells for 150, the 103R maybe 250.00
What ADC and DAC were used with the recordings you heard at 24.192? If you say dCS, I'll unsubscribe 😀
Another retelling of the legend.
More arm waving Sy, still waiting for you to explain my question ...🙄
I've seen that claimed as well. Unlikely.
Residues (oil based and nasty); yes they remain on brand new vinyls, and that's why you have to clean them good those brand new albums (records, LPs).
Unfortunately, for your own personal information sir, it is true (fact).
Cheers.
P.S. Google, and if you can't I will for you (get links).
{Even my CDs; I freeze clean them, each one of them, even brand new.}

Look at regular retail
Denon DL-103R Phono Cartridge
I was pretty close. Even at $250 which you will have to be careful where you buy it or you might end up with out of specs cart.
Either way...you are still talking about $650.
At this price point the cartridge is not really competitive IMHO!
It's like the dog that chases after his tail.
Stock Denon is nothing extraordinary and modified it probably costs too much for what is worth it!
I think though...the stick cart is a good bang for the buck! $180 average for 103 is really little for the performance it offers. You will probably have to spend more than twice as much to get something better.
