How bad is it to mask the surround on a full range driver?

Though women, once they know that the yellow is there, and can see it, even if I change the color, she'll know its there.
So, even if you cut a smaller hole, won't she still know that out of sight it is still yellow and be bothered?
🤔
The negative point about a smaller hole is there will be some air trapped between the baffle and surround. The effect of this is a peak in output of 2.738 dB, and a 17 dB rise in the 5th harmonic distortion. Only the 5th though, the others stay the same. OK this is all bull-oney, there will be an effect but probably small, ya gotta try it I guess. Or put yellow tint glasses on your wife. Or hypnosis.

By the way if the surround seems so think, is it actually even airtight?

Oh she'll tolerate it. Just given preference, we all have an opinion. I would rather see the surround. And after measuring it masked, the distortion did go up, despite the response not changing in a major way (well in bass 3db is a lot I suppose). So that pretty much solves it, I'll just leave the surround exposed. I will entertain coloring it though if possible, if I can find a good brown maker that will actually color it. Risky, but hey, that's fun too.

The surround is very thin, light goes right through, I doubt its air tight, but very cones are even air tight truly and leak all kinds of stuff. Some leak on purpose for venting.

is the fullrange a legendary one?

Heard its paper is treated somehow with a sort of ceramics giving high velocity?

If its in mint condition why not change it with another aficionado who would prefer your looks and offers other surround colour?
whats the name of the driver?

Not legendary status at all. They're very popular in the open baffle communities out there, but far from being legendary. Inexpensive even.

Lii Audio Fast-8's.

I prefer the fully bone/cream/ivory color like in the website image. The yellow was not expected. I don't hate the yellow, and I like how they sound. Love how they look. The yellow isn't my first choice though. True, I could change them out with something else, like a Tang woofer that looks similar I suppose. I dislike shipping speakers or anything around, too many problems with couriers and payment and people being scam jerks and stuff. If I ever did sell them it would be local hand off only.

The image on their site doesn't have the yellow band. Lii Song. But Lii Song & Lii Audio are the same company. Lii Song does international. Lii Audio seems to do local via Aliexpress and stuff.

Looks like several variations. Not sure what's fake, real, copy cat, etc, at this point.

Some are immediately different like the Fast-15's with several variations too (the 15's are very popular):

That's a good point too. Though, I wonder, if it would impede movement. How do you think it would attach without bothering the movement of the cone?

No grill! I gotta see them lovely cones. 😊

Very best,
I would try several different things, try flush mounting the speaker with a surrounding ring (actually a stack of thin rings) that is a few mm taller than X-Max, then put another ring on top that is the same outside diameter but wider towards the center and covers the nasty evil yellow. You could progressively stack large to smaller layers but I think that might look too much like a chameleon's eye. You could get artistic and stack rings of different colors like a blue (or your wife's favorite color) ring in a stack of black rings. I'm partial to turquoise but red would look nice too. Next I would try to flush mount the top ring by mounting the driver in a recess allowing for the thickness and additional width of the felt rings. This would make a nicer presentation I think. The only problem is maybe in humid weather or in changeable climates the felt may sag after a few years?

Felt rings can be cut with a round template and a razor blade or with a mat cutting tool that picture framers use.

No grill.👍

Very creative, worth thinking about! Thanks!
