You are quite right, there is a recessed, milled circle. Sharp eyes.
The round house is pushed on in a different way: the mounting structure has a edge on which the rim of the house fits on inside of that recess. Note also the base plate is stamped in another way.

The old ones have the house with the rim directly on the base plate. No recess.

"Make look-alike industry"?

the old working TOKINs I have

:magnet: Then the magnet test: the K182 has magnetic base and house, just like this THF. The K180 I have has a copper base - a much better industrial practice of course.

Good detective work there.

You are going to see DIY projects using 2SK182ES and THF-51S in the near future
by me and other members, and the situation with fakes will only get worse.

With Tomoaki in Japan not currently offering, Pras1170 (ebay) in China is the only
reliable source I have experience with, and it seems that her remaining supply is
very limited.

New old stock transistor triodes start to be scarce now.
Well, lucky Diyers who bought genuine ones in the past at a lower price
How many electronic hobby aficionados, we are with the Tokin's on the shelves, in drawers ?
Estimation around hundred or more, a lot of enthusiasts 😀 Congratulations

Also better avoid these too

tested as SIT: does not work. gate pin does not allow lowering nor raising the bias.
So:
Tested as an NPN transistor: does not work. (no conduction above 0,6V 'Vbe')
Tested as mosfet: does not work (no threshold above 4 V Vgs)
  • The connection I made was big pin as source; house as collector via 15 ohm to + 25V; small pin as base connected to a potmeter 25K connected to plus minus 12V, over a 4k resistor to the small pin.
Whatever the position of the slider, Only a voltage of about (between -1 V to plus 1V is left). The small pin sinks all input current.
  • That is, with or without Power Supply +25V connected
  • No current through the 'collector' pin.
  • With my real Tokins I can set the gate pin to -10 or -15V, VGS, without gate current. Then I can bring up the 25V power line, and turn the slider untill it conducts. With real mosfets, they start to conduct above 3,5 volt or so in this setting.

Might it be a relabelled thyristor marked as TOKIN THF? Do they think we are dumb? :vampire3:.
we are, in buying these.

  • Am I right that the connections of the THF are like the 2SK182?

This is a printed, electroplated product, because the price is cheap, so many AliExpress (Chinese sellers) some of them use my photo, and then upload the picture to sell on AliExpress

Pretend to make buyers trust them and attract customers to buy
(But the selling price is also very expensive)

Thank you very much Mr.Pass :wiz: for the last news.
The best part is coming....
my hope we get some writing for educational purpose with DUT
conditions description and schematic for accurate tests, current leakage etc.

Am I right to assume that these projects will also be compatible with the use of 2SK180 devices? Will there be any customisation required?

As there are I assume a fair number of 2SK180's out there bought for these projects, if people think it a good idea, I can make the 3d model file or a drawing of a mounting block for these available, possibly for a group buy to be actioned or for people to do their own thing. (I am sure that there are other connection options possible).
Many thanks for the assistance Mr Pass.

@ Egellings

In my understanding they are all N channel hockey puck triode Tokin's and amplifier basic designs is useful anyway
if hobby amateurs don't have SIT's another version is made by Mr. Pass with
modifications for easy available today jfet's and power mosfets use..
Mr. Pass know The One and Only 🙂
