Half Chang build

Actually, I've got a huge mess of braised short-ribs in the oven that will be ready around 4 pm EST today, along with some scalloped potatoes and sauted carrots. Then there a several bottles of wine. Even with family here for the holiday there should be plenty for another visitor or two.

Maybe a bit late to catch a flight from AZ, but you are welcome any time, just drop me a line!

Bob,

I like the new arrangement!

I'm close to gluing the front baffles onto the HC's so I can do the final tuning of foam lining and BSC. Looks like I have to deliver them to the kids w/o completing the staining & finish, as the weather has turned too cold now. That will give me another excuse to go spend time w/ the grandkids while I complete the finishing at their place. 😉

Merry Christmas (and happy new year too,)
Jim

We have two cats

We still need to do a lot of vacuuming to keep the cat hair under control but, by and large, the cats seem to be honoring a sort of understanding about who goes where... or maybe it's us...

Put cats and speakers together something is bound to happen. We have a Devon Rex, almost no hair, no allergies but there are other issues.

Back on topic: love the black front with timber sides. Disguises the funny shaped driver flange.

I won't speak for Martin, but when he was at my house to listen to the half-changs I seem to remember him speaking favorably of the Half Changs in comparison to the ML TLs - at the least in terms of LF response. Maybe he'll chime in here.

Our 2 cats don't bother much with the speakers except to rub facial scent on the corners and to peer at the lower openings, completely perplexed, during some vocals.

I think the half-changs are a step up from the ML TL in terms of bass output. The amount of BSC required for the ML TL is very high, it was much much less for Bob's speakers. The half-chang is an excellent design that I would definitely recommend for a FE-206E driver.

I recently finished a pair of HCs for my son and daughter-in-law. Delivered them this weekend. We spent a lot time listening to them and really enjoyed them.

The version that I built uses the FE207E, FT17H Supertweeter and a baffle step. For the baffle step I am using 1.8 mH coil and 6 olm series parallel resister.

For our listening we were using a cheap Toshiba DVD player and a Marantz 1060 integrated amp that I picked up on the the bay for $100. This a great amp with very nice smooth sound. No SS grunge.

We initially found the bass to somewhat lean. We hit the loudness switch on the amp and POW everything was in focus and very balanced. The difference with and without the loudness compensation was night and day and not at all subtle.

I also really like the addition of the FT17H supertweeter. It add so much to the presentation and in my opinion, takes the design to the next level.

All in all I couldn't be happier....what great design.

This is why i like the older Marantz amps. It dosent sound like a typical SS amp. Its a damn shame that with todays modern technology that there is no equilivent, except at a very high price.

Tweeter placement with B20 half chang?

I'm going to be building a set of half-changs this weekend using the Pioneer B20 driver and the small tweeter from PE.

Where should I put the tweeter on the baffle? Above in the center or to one side? Other options?

I put them below.

Above or below, closest to ear height. Best not to put them on the centre line. same distance to multiple edges doubles the diffraction effect of the edge.
I measured across my baffle and put them at at the golden ratio point across it just for the sake of picking a number.
for example, if the baffle was 161.8mm I would have put it at 100mm from one edge.
My Marantz PM550DC has a hum problem 🙁
I wish I'd never sold my gold ??500?? power amp with the vapour phase heatsink and big VU meters. can't remember the exact part number. At least it went to a good home.
edit: these Fe207 and 206 require phase plugs and a good thrashing before they are any good. If I bought another pair I'd take a knife to them straight out of the box.

Side Brace Clarification

The Half Chili Chang shows side braces in the plans. I'm building the Half Chang with the Pioneer B20. Could someone please clarify the following:
  • Does the Half Chang need braces?
  • How wide are the side braces?
  • Would a holy brace that goes from one side to the other be more effective than the diagonal braces?

Well I am a newbiee into loudspeaker building, but i for sure 🙂 have some skills into carpenter's work though.

I have begun building these HalfChang's (Just got the ply cut yesterday), and both Bob Trancho, and planet10-Dave have been very kind answering quistion's to me on email-conversation (A hole lot i think 😉)

1.
After reading though this thread once more, i was wondering if someone could point me into the right direction, wheter or not to put them holybraces diagonal or horisontal ??

2.
I know that one brace must be put ''tight'' behind the driver (just touching the coil), but is it a matter of stiffing up the chassis, or do i have to follow the drawings to get best performance ??

3.
What procedure do you guy's use, for making the driverhole ?? (saw / chamferdrill ??)

Jesper.
