Half Chang build

I know that one brace must be put ''tight'' behind the driver (just touching the coil), but is it a matter of stiffing up the chassis, or do i have to follow the drawings to get best performance ??

Hi Jesper,

The holey brace is drawn vertically (and extends front to back), if you went to the effort of sloping it a bit (still front-to-back) it would be better.

As long as the holyy brace, braces the driver to the back of the cabinet (and braces the baffle & the back) and has 30-40% holes it doesn't matter how you build it.

I cannot ressist putting a picture of my ongoing project ... sry ...😉

I was so lucky, that the compagny, where i work, just got a new pro. circular-saw. It's a giant, with a nice big sliding table, with mm-indicator (what its set to you get excatly within 0,5mm 😉) so cutting wood is very easy. Also the circular-saw, has a small dual/opposite rotating backside cutter (English ehh??) So no damage is made to the ply, on backside when cutting !!!...

I took a picture, assambling some wood, for HalfChang. The finish, when done, will be the same as Bob Trancho's.

Jesper.

HC for soft rock like Pink Floyd ?

Hi all,

I have been following closely the HC design and I'm now convinced, I will build one. The wood will be cut this weekend but fist I'd like to have opinion from the few people that were part of the listening session at Bob's place or other that actually heard it.

How would this speaker perform with soft rock like Pink Floyd, RUSH and stuff like Bob Marley. Also, since I have 2 young kid, we do often listen to hip-hop. I do not expect this enclosure to sound like a BIB but bass wise how is it ? (Dry, fast, powerful, deep ?)

BTW this enclosure looks similar to Das Viech from Cyburgs using the Beyma 8AG/N.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I've not heard HC, but my guess is that it will handle these just fine.

HC is not really like Das Viech at all. The latter being a variation on the scoop and HC being a BVR (ie a bass reflex with care taken to make it much more tolerant of the way T/S changes with volume, weather, specific driver, etc.

PS: that gift batch is finally starting to march thru their last service here (example below)...

Pink Floyd = soft rock?!?

HC is pretty much the exact opposite to the Viech in design terms -the latter being a chamberless QW horn, while the former is effectively a bass reflex enclosure with a large waveguide used rather than a regular type of vent. It shouldn't have any problem handling the music you indicate -itll do it pretty much as well as any FR based system can.

AKA hereabouts as (pre)scoring blade - particularly useful on those cross-grain cuts, and also works wonders for not chipping melamine finished panels.

Well, they're metal, rather than progressive rock. PF = smoother post DSOTM, when they became less interesting, I'll give you that, but put their Pompii sessions through the speakers & with the possible exception of Metallica's live S&M album, you're in the realms of Dynamics R Us. Soft isn't exactly the word that springs to mind. 😉 (One of These Days, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Saucerful of Secrets etc.)

Ah yes, the UmmaGumma daze - if you can remember them that well, you must not have inhaled?

Scott, you'd probably know - just what kind of mushrooms were in that omelet in Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

that's a cow girl!

The Wall - soft rock?, uh - nope

Personally my favorite PF thematically was "WYWH" - having been in retail audio sales during this period, if I never hear DSTOM again (even if it was on Ohm F's and Marantz 500) that'd be fine by me.

Now, that's art!

Pioneer B20 Half Chang Tweeter

I almost have the Half-Chang for Pioneer B20 complete. However, I don't have the tweeters connected yet (the small PE ones). The tweeter will be connected in parallel to the woofer with a 2.0uF capacitor in series to keep the lower frequencies out of the tweeter. In other words:

o connect 2.0uF cap from B20+ to Tweeter+
o connect wire from B20- to Tweeter-

Will somebody please confirm I am hooking these up correctly?

Scott,

I have a question...

Can Visaton B200 be made to work in the half-chang cabinet? Or, perhaps with the slight modification of box volume? I've got The Visatons in the Open Baffle, but, as I recently moved to a smaller apartment, and my listening room "shrank" to 4 x 4 m, having large Ob's is becoming an issue...

Therefore I am thinking about possible boxed option for the Visatons...

Any idea?

Thanks,

Vix

As this ''woolcarpet'' damping material is kindof hard to get here in DK, i found some lookalike, used to damp noise in cars etc...

Do you guru's 🙂 think it's ok to use this ?

Jesper.

EDIT: Size 8mm.
