Guess it's back to... "Sub Theory Class" 101

Yes, you are right rigtec.
F3 it's insignificant.
As you can see here (site in French, look at the graphics only), that's a common mistake for many diy newbies, as you give more extension (LF) your F3 goes up (lower Qt). 🙂

BTW: Inductor,

Why are you posting "speaker basics" in this thread?? Does it appear that anyone here does not understand how a speaker works?? Your comment implications here could be taken as condescending.

Mini DSP in a box will do that for $125. It does add a slight delay to the signal however.

I just googled miniDSP and wow, so much information about the device was available, and the reviews... were all good! I do, however, have some concerns about it's "set-up procedure"; seems to require some professional programming skills, maybe the use of a RTA w/mic...? I need to spend some time reading more about "what to order", setting up a parametric board w/cross-over, etc. Thanks for the heads-up.

I started w/ 1cuft per woofer and when I pushed them hard I could swear I heard the woofers bottom out.
A local subwoofer guru told me to eat up at least .25 cuff per driver and it would solve the problem.
After I sprayed a bunch of spray foam inside each box the bass got punchier and ALOT more defined.
Then I added a bit of boost around 30hz and never felt the need to touch it again.

I quoted this statement earlier but it went unnoticed, so I'm quoting it again because I think it bares repeating; and I think Einric raises a very good point here. There are some things that can't be measured using T/S parameters. There're some subtilties that are "uncaptureable" utilizing formulas, algebra, trig, calculus or any other numeric system tool. It's the place where science seamlessly, fades into art.

The graphs may not be able to show warmth, or "punch"(transients) that's in the bass signal. Now I'm wondering (after what Einric explained about eradicating .25 cuft' per driver from his own speaker box). Instead of increasing the size of my "four 10" sealed sub hoping for lower bass, should I be decreasing the box size for better bass; (not more), but better? Einric, JL recommends .625 per 10w6 driver in a sealed box. Based on your experience, what do you say? Or all the rest of you guys, what's your approach?? I'd like to know.

Maybe I'm not in the same tune as you, but, no offense really...
I already stopped posting earlier if that is what you (mean and) want, so cool down a little mate. :snowman2:

Inductor...

I don't want you to stop posting!? Don't stop posting! I've enjoyed what I've seen of your work here, and your experience has helped a lot of ppl.

PS: You keep right on sharing brother!

rigtec, best regards

Those "Speaker Basics" from the link I posted are really more like Engineering 101, Advanced Physics or Loudspeakers Physics Fundamentals. They are a good read if you take the time and patience (and for anyone with some interest in learning). A relation between the semantics of another website and this thread is purely ridiculous. Also for a broad information, there are also those people that like to read the threads and don't post or are not members. Best Regards.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank all of you who have posted here on this thread, in an effort to help me get some things "straightened out" regarding my ongoing car sub-woofer system. I've just "attempted"... to pull the trigger on a "miniDSP/box" 2x4 with 2.1 advanced two way x-over plug-in +sub configuration (seems to be "trouble in Hong Kong" with registration/check-out links) Lol. Thank you mRgSr and sine143, sooo much, for your willingness to help steer me in the right direction; I really appreciate it. And the others, Einric and Inductor; who have posted to help me as well, thank you for your contributions. sincerely,

Greg, (rigtec) cheers!

For what it is worth, there are those of us who are following these threads and who are also electrically and sonically illiterate and appreciate any reference that might help us understand what the hell you guys are talking about without having to ask stupid questions and making even bigger fools of ourselves.

Hi VolvoHeretic,

Questions aren't stupid. Not among ambitious, egar to learn, hard working people. I can certainly appreciate that, we all have to start out somewhere. But when a group is discussing a "semi-advanced" topic involving "Theile Small parameters", or a "Linkwitz transform" circuit, this may not be the proper place to show "how a speaker works"; kind of inappropriate, and a slap in the face to those who have studied for years, just to get some concept behind "audio engineering theory" under their belts, (not that I've arrived).

Also, not trying to be insensitive or mean, but I started this thread for a reason, and that was to invite other knowledgeable, experienced audio enthusiasts to help resolve an issue that I was having with a "temperamental" subwoofer system. For those who are just beginning in the audio field, there are plenty of posts here on these forums, that would likely be much more helpful in understanding "speaker basics". Once again, I do understand your post.

rigtec, best regards

No prob.

Btw I'm not far from north NJ, I'm in Westchester NY.

If you're around and want to check out the system in my CT200, I have:
JBL ms8 with OEM head unit
JL audio 300/4
JL audio 500/1
Dayton reference ho 15 in ported box (will most likely build a smaller sealed box soon however)
Peerless hds 6.5" nomex in all four doors
All four doors treated with second skin audio damplifier
Vifa xt25 dual ring radiator up front (powered from ms8 internal amp)
Kinetic hc battery in parallel with the OEM puny battery
All wiring install etc done by me.

I'm very pleased with the results, with high quality recordings the system sounds great!

Hi MrgSr,

Dang!! You really did it up didn't you?! I'd love to see that. I was just up there in Westchester last week, visiting a friend at "Valhalla Hospital". Maybe we'll have a visit one day, seeing that you're not that far away! 🙂

BTW: What's the deal with ordering/registering with miniDSP.com? I tried to open an account w/the devteam forum on thurs night, to learn more about what I needed to order e.g., which platform, plug-ins, accessories...etc. They were supposed to send me a conformation email with an activation code so I could login but it never happened. So I figured out what I needed by reading-up on their products. Tried to add stuff to "my cart", but I couldn't; prompt said: Your access has been blocked or your account has not been activated. I tried to call "Hong Kong" but nobody was home. Lol.

Did you encounter any similar problems when ordering your parts??

Greg

Not that I remember. But it was a while ago when I must have registered.

Did it go to a junk mail mailbox?

Checked, junk, trash, and spam boxes just now but nothing. The time in China is 12 hrs advanced from the U.S. So when I called yesterday, it was 6 pm here, but 6:am there. I didn't realize that it was Saturday (to them), so no one answered. I guess I'll have to wait until Sun (tomorrow) around 9-10 pm our time to call them.

Thanks bro!

Hi MrgSr,

Just (finally) got a confirmation email from miniDSP; Kinda psyched!

Their email said: "Your application has been approved by our administration team. Your account with the following details:
Email: xxxxxxxxx, Username: rigtec, has been activated.

We welcome you to our online community and trust that together we will grow. Enjoy the experience!

Kind Regards,
Website Administration Team"

I just put in my order (2x4 miniDC for car audio w/2.1 Advanced 2 way xover plug-in) can't wait to get started! Thanks again for all your help... "and patience", totally appreciated! Sincerely,

Greg, (rig)
