what happened to the cen?
Been really busy - one day... But maybe SEN instead as its easier to get matched k170 fets than j74 matched to k170. I think spencer has run out...
Anyone know another good source?
Hello Ryan,
I'm in for a SEN, my pre is single ended only ! And the Cen had a Last Supper side who smelled a little like pre-reseruction...
According to you does the 4 four SK170 of the SEN need to be matched with each others or does the shematic need just two matched pairs for each pcb (two needed for Stereo) ?
It could be fun to draw a pcb with the same versatility than we allowed for the Distinction-1541... I have already a name : the Distinctive-Sen pcb 🙂
On the versality side wisches :
- different pitch for the I/V resistor to allow bulk foils resistor like the 1.7 cm pitch of the coaxial Rohpoint Z foil... like some radial Vishays...
- Idem for the PS caps : pitch between 0.3 mm and 1 cm: my idea is to allow a good choice of inductance/ESR ratio... more 2200 uf than 220 uF.... vias could be of a suffisant diameter ! A Nichicon KG cap could be a good concensus : not the boomy bass of the Silmic2 nore the chirgical treble of the Nichicon KZ muse (I use most of the time here) .
- trace for a good final or unique LDO regs near the pcb side before a phoenix connector (caps vias between phoenix connector and reg vias needed by good rules of design? (see that on the digital pcbs, don't know for analogic!): 3 for regs à la LM78/79 or 5 vias LinearTechnology : 1963A (positiv) or LT1035 (negativ) : something good for analogic !
- smd caps trace before & after the reg vias to avoid oscilations if needed !
- series smd trace for smd inductance before or after the regs ?
Is it a good idea to allow traces at the output of the SEN for a smoother passive output filter phase compatible but with smd parts ????? What is the fhz width of the SEN ? Compatible with 320 and more oversampling for the non NOS users ?
- for the output vias : something to allow pcb RCA plugs but on a very good quality (sourcing needed to check the pins measurement for the pcb - unluckily not sourcable on Mouser or Digikey; or vias big enough to solder good coax cable of the same size than our RCA cable : the output is always a default of the best design for DIY imho !
- enter vias which match the arrengement output vias of the Distinction-1541 to minimize wires length : pcbs side to side (or a minimum for the signal & gnd wire to be wooven together for each R&L ?)
- on a unique pcb (stereo) to reduce the printing costs ?
I have to try myself one day... any shareware to draw ?

I have two distinction boards, as I plan to use Ians PCM to I2S, and I can potentially go balanced. Anyone know if there are any real gains in going balanced? Its easy with a SEN, just need jfets.

Eldam, you need each pair of sk170 to have the same idss, so you can have one with 6 and 7 =13 and one pair 8 and 5 = 13.
Im using salas shunts for all my supplies and an LM317 for my FIFO. The TL431 and the LM317 as a pre reg may be a good combo.
Hi Aronier,
Maybe this could help you : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/power-supplies/259839-3-legs-regulators-best-swap.html#post4007114
Those designs with LM317 & TL431 are good, but we have maid some progress since. they are rapid, but a little noisy in relation maybe to the modern one à la Salas fellow (that I never tried myself, just read it!). The rule here is to have a good big cap before and ALWAYS a pi filer before.
With the LM317, i would have a look at the Nazaar regs whithout outputs caps but 0.1 uf : a little the same than a shunt.
All those Shunt like have to be very close to the load... not at 10 or 20 cm.... That's why I'm for a pcb which allow the regulation to be close to the load...at least for the last stage : but here we have to be carefull : all the ldo regs in an embeded chip are not musical... we have the temptation to look at the low noise value which is not enough (i talk about analogic stage here !)
@ Luke,
Thank you Luke,
Is there a wide dispersion of the idss ? Or are those values relativly close ? What is most of the time the number needed to match a pair ? With your answer, I understand there are 2 tiles less loss 🙂
I opened a thread for that (Build thread for the Distinction-1541) : it could be simplier to merge all your questions and answer in it to allow everybody to read it : there are many repetitions with all the thread open around the TDA...

Hi,
I got the pcb and now I am looking for a complete DAC project.
I am not an expert and I need to follow a detailed guide (by the way I succesfully built a number of gainclones and the Wire head amp).
Can you give some suggestions?
thank you

It was not designed as a all in one project and that's why we need just to design a coreboard.
But if you are on USB or spidf, simultanous or just I2S and to go faster : read the thread i did for input stage choice.
To be shorter if USB i will go for the Lorien Wave i/O both for cost and aviability. Myself with SPIDF for the same reasons, I'mm going to test a simple 15 euros Sure electronics pcbs for spidf with Wolfson 8805 and hardware mods (even if the layout is not sota, i have a SB Duet so I need SPIDF but USB is a better choice for sound Quality... SD card reader is better but complicate to manage you library : go for the CFT grup Buy on the subnamed folder !
For output stage : the best way for a rapid and good result is a SEN or CEN output stage. No pcbs but simple design : you can do it point to pint with soldering on a verroboard and a low noise 15 V PS or just 9 V cells (two series for a middle zero Gnd : - + - + : xhere the midle +- are connected together to do the ref Gnd point.
For the PS : go with simple Shunt regs or already PS boards populated at 30 euros eachs :many choices...
If money left go for C-Core transformer to feeds the PS pcbs : you need 2 x 9 V loaded (I surmise) for the two + & - 5 V of the TDA. Also a 18 or more for the - 15 V and tou can take the second secondary winding to feed the input stage (alwats better e.g. for a USB than the current of the computer....). A third separate transformer for the output stage is needed or cells to go fast with very good result also with the SEN/CEN (plan on DIYAUDIO or above in the TDA1541 threads !).
A problem with such projects is the different goals and money we have. The hardiest was made with the printing of the coreboard with the share RyanJ maid with a preboard and added improvements we share all together and also the kind print and shipment he maid for us (at a very low cost as you know).
Input and Output are a compromise as on different boards but all was made on the design of the Distinction to minimize the problems (UF.L connectors to match impedance and return path currents), vias for a separate clock board on the digital side of the coreboard. And also embeded place for I/V passive resistors : both smt or through holes... .
Choices was given above about two decoupling choice and DEM caps in this threads.
Questions are welcome, I'm a poor technician myself with more will than skill 😱.
cheers

Thank you, you gave me a lot of material to study!

My pleasure... your re welcome !
If you would spend less time you could also read the complete post 😀 :http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digi...-list-tda1541a-core-board-27.html#post4073642 : here some sugestions will give you less to study.
Let me please help you more before you study how to click or use the seach engine or save more time :
a more complete kit, nearly off-shelves but you will need some soldering : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/blogs/dvb-projekt/1032-new-red-baron-dac-module-v5-0.html
A all in one here : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/grou...41a-dac-i2s-bus-architecture.html#post2197260... oups the same, sorry, here the plane has 5 wings no more three !
A even better one here : Abbingdon Music Research - CD - 77 Reference Class Disk Processor
A similar asking like you do : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/203511-any-good-tda1541a-dac-kit.html AKA : "Is there a kit sounding like the CD-77, at least better than the CD-777 but at the price of an EBay kit ?"
I you want to share your futur studies and help us, you can also share here which is not an off shelves DAC kit grup buy : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digi...nction-tda-1541-build-thread.html#post4009125 : AKA "Is there any good kit to cloth my coreboard and afford me less studies" : some usefull links on first page.
I saved also a lot of time in studies reading also this little thread:

For the people with few money and few brained with studies, some very nice fellows had the idea to ask to a brand and CFT fellow asked to a kind famous diyer and concretized the concept. This diyer who have a brand for some years is an open mind named Monsieur Pedja Rogic and gived also him knowledge for almost free and firstly to share and help for a charity curse (here both poors diyers and local jazz festival but GB is closed, maybe you can try to ask for a populated kit yet... but not sure. Hi Subbu...
Argh... I asked many times to JP to join us on this project to developp this board... before it was printed...seems TDA1541 was an old story for him ! Just fools don't change their minds... 🙂
Happy to see you here Subbu, listen a lot your dac every day with few caps mods of mine.
May you helps us to developp a all in one USB input with simultaning mode and some PS module around the Distoinction TDA1541: both for this boards and the Distinction DAC 3 voltage rails (+5V/-5V/-15V) ?
(believe unluckilly all were sold... maybe Ryan has one left but don't know !)
Very cute and versatil pcb than the Distinction-1541 with all the sharing and goodwilling fellows for a non commercial project : "is there any good TDA 1541 kit ?" : No of course : let make ourselves here on DIYA with all the experience shared by all the great tweakers/diyers and goodwilled people !

Hi.
Not sure how many more I have left. I'll check tonight but I definitely have at least one for you.
Last PCB
Hi Ryan,
can you sell this last one me?
Anyway, thank you
Saulius
tagheuer,
I have enough PCBs for you to have 2 also.
Only 1 left now.
