Steve, do you have a link for your Avalanche driver? I know it is nice.
I used google but couldn't find it.
Also, have you seen the below fs thread. That is to discuss the dimension you have introduced.

A guy posting as "Badman" mentioned fan subwoofers in post #18, but I suspect that no one knew what he was speaking about. While I have heard of them, I never heard them reproduce sound myself, but everyone who has raves about them. They are expensive now because they are new, but when mass-produced, their price should come down.
Ascendant audio made the Avalanche subwoofer line using the XBL technology (a technology which results in linear BL motors) developed by Dan Wiggins of Adire. The Avalanche line of woofers is no longer made, and the newest line of drivers can be found here:

I believe that you access the older line of drivers, but I don't know how at the moment.

Thank you. I just looked at the new 18" fs- 14.6hz!
Very impressive.
I did not, and still do not know what a fan subwoofer is. I would like to.🙂

I don't know what to make of that fan sub.
I don't yet understand how it works.
I'm continuing to read. Plausible.

For all the experts in this thread: Is it generally better to have a separate subwoofer for music and movies/games, or is a subwoofer a subwoofer?
Some people would say that a sub tuned for movies/games is different- I say a big, good, sealed sub will work for either or.
Why not a ported sub?
And say you had a sub for music and a sub for movies/games and you wanted to hook them up to one reciever....how would you do this to where it would allow you to alternate between the 2 subs?

I think an extreme sub can work for all applications. When you start trying to make compromises in cost or size, then you have to more precisely define the application.
Hmmm...what is your definition of extreme?zenmasterbrian said:I think an extreme sub can work for all applications. When you start trying to make compromises in cost or size, then you have to more precisely define the application.
Depends if you want the subwoofer to act like an instrument and be resonant and nonlinear.rocko1290 said:For all the experts in this thread: Is it generally better to have a separate subwoofer for music and movies/games, or is a subwoofer a subwoofer?
Get a proper low distortion sub. The original signal should have all the musical components in it.
I don't really understand anything you just said...sorry.mike.e said:

Get a low distortion subwoofer. Its a waste of money to have one for 'gaming' aswell. You can easily make a boomy sound with some EQ if you must.
What exactly do you mean by low distortion?mike.e said:

Also, when tuning or "calibrating" a subwoofer, are the adjustments usually made within the receiver or on the subwoofer amplifier?
Here is the Ascendent Audio Alliance 18

I assume that this is the new version of what SteveCallas used.
An especially impressive and cost effective driver.
I wonder how this compares to the Hemp Audio 25", mentioned way way back.
There was also a sono tube design with 21"ers mentioned.
Then also, I wonder if there is any chance this Ascendent company might start to go above 18"?

Big is not necessarily better. A single big driver can create the bass in a more size efficient package, but whatever arrangement you use to mount the driver it had better be robust because the increased size/mass requires a substantial box/mounting scheme.
The best bass I can remember hearing was a Genesis tower of 8 inch drivers with 8 per side. This was part of their Genesis 200 speaker system.
The old Avalanche drivers used the patented Adire XBL technology, it is not clear to me that the newer drivers can achieve the same low distortion.

Mostly I want to move lots of air, and have the lowest fs I can find. I'm interested in infra bass.

There was a sound reinforcement manufacturer in the late 70's and 80's that made a subwoofer that used a "paddle" and "low-mass, fast-reversing, DC motors". I never saw the inside of one, but "heard" the effect. It was just like a shockwave. I think they were used at a couple of "Day-on-the-Green" 's. Those were stadium shows in the california Bay Area. ...I can't remember the name ....it wasn't Turbosound. ........ ..... Was it ServoDrive?? Anyway, they would make a great infra-sub project.
I know all about Day on the Green.
But I have never heard of this paddle machine. Is it like the fan subwoofers mentioned on the below fs thread?
I would love to hear more.
