Watchout!
There are many threads showing up indicating that these are maintenance nightmares...

Here is a whole thread to talk about it!

This new 25" that someone posted at the start of this thread looks interesting. Compare it to the 18" Ascent.

The Alliance 18 may model similar to the Avalanche, but it does not use any special low distortion motor technology like the Avalanche. Here are some parameters of the Avalanche 18:
Qes - 0.429
Qms - 6.0
Qts - 0.4
Fs - 16.1hz
Vas - 550 liters
Mms - 369 grams
Re - 3.2 ohm
Le - 2.4 mH
Xmax - 27mm
Dual 2ohm voice coils, treated paper cone, carbon fiber dust cap, foam surround, I believe a 3" voice coil (not 100% sure), thermal handling of 800 watts RMS, and XBL^2 technology. It weighs in at just under 50lbs. Here are a couple pictures of my two Avalanches that are waiting in the wings 😀

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Wow!
That compact disc in the center really gives the scale.
Can this still be bought? How much power can it take?
Do you have a www link for that driver?
How do you think this compares to the 21" in one of the SonoTube examples given earlier?
How about the hemp 25"
How about other 18"ers?
Wow!

Zen how about instead of looking for some 50' driver with a fs of .005. Ask around and audition abunch of subs first, because I think that your kind of out of it. 😀 I tried to put that as nice as possible.
peace

Let's reread the title of the thread... That subwoofer would fall into the giant category in my opinion.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how that servo drive subwoofer works?

Yes.
I get mine at BESTBUY ($15 for fifty)
VERBATUM is a good brand these days.
But be careful -- quality changes week to week.
For example, FUJI used to be good -- now they are cr@p
You really have to do your homework.
Oh! I'm sorry. I forgot. You have no clue what that means...

Servo Drive? Never seen anything like this before. Wonder how well it works? Wonder if it can go lower than 14hz?
Seems like an approach that would work better with even bigger drivers, and for lower frequencies.

zen, all of the questions you just asked can be found in various posts of mine earlier in this thread

Sorry Steve, I don't specifically remember you comparing yours to other drivers. I do remember you talking about various parameters like xd and Vas.
But anyway, I was kind of inviting other to look at the various large drivers, and see what else might be available.

Steve, don't worry. We are going to do just like you said. When we think we've really found something, we are going to invite you back to show us how to do it even better.
The whole purpose of this thread is so we can put up something that you can show us how to improve upon, and how to save dough.

Cmon Zen -- be honest.
The real purpose of this thread is to jack the rest of us around.
Most (if not all) of the questions you pose can be answered simply by using the SEARCH key.
Dude, you really need to stop being so L-A-Z-Y ...
I want to get this back on topic by summarizing the drivers that we have already looked at.
Then we can start comparing them in greater detail, as well as looking for more.
Then, Steve has offered to show us how to do it right, which given what he has already built, I know will be worthwhile.
We've talked of the Avalanche 18" that Steve used.
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=957823#post957823
We've talked of the Ascendant Audio 18", a new one
http://ascendantaudio.com/allliance_page.html
We seen a 21" used in a SonoTube design, from the MCM catalog.
I've seen this in the MCM catalog myself. Not sure who makes it, or if it is still available.
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=969080#post969080
looks like fs = 25hz
We've seen a 25" from Hemp audio.
http://www.hempacoustics.com/products.php
These listed so far seem the most available and the most practical.
We have also seen some very large ones. Not sure about availability or pricing on most of these. Seem to be 800mm or 32"
Mitsubishi / Diatone
Clarion ( $2900US ?)
Fostex
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=955440#post955440
And then mention of a 60" from Mitsubishi.
There also may be some large drivers from MTX.
Then there was also the fan speaker, and something else with paddles.
Then there was the belt driven speaker with a rotating servo motor.

Just to follow up the above post:
We have this, which might be the 21" in the MCM catalog?
http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/detalle.php?id=13
We also have this 24", with fs = 25 hz
http://www.papl.co.uk/Search.asp?types=yes&type=24
Here is the Clarion. Not sure of availability. Certainly seems pricey. fs = 17hz. But often talked about as being able to go down to 5hz?
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=992697#post992697
We have here a source for some drivers, and much more
http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/
Could be $3900US for the Fostex 800mm. But need the paper catalog to see this.
Here are the Mitsubishi Diatones

Here is Steve's offer

Which mentions this 22" MTX driver which can take 12,000 watts and weighs 369 lbs. I don't know what to make of this. I don't think this is readily available. Can't imagine the cost. I believe this is for car competitions, and meant to go very loud, but not to low frequency.
http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products/subwoofers/jackHammer.cfm
This seems to have JBL drivers up to 18"
http://www.jblpro.com/FullLineCat/Portable C.pdf
There is also mention of WinISD, as design program.
