OT/: Anyone here received an offer for a free Windows 10 upgrade?? Should I worry?
Here it is, from the horse's mouth.

Yes, but even the extensive FAQ is silent about portability of hardware drivers. Will my USB scope still work, my soundcard, my dScope audio analyser?

Take an image beforehand.
If you are not happy with the upgrade, restore the image.
You might want to take an image after the upgrade as well (before restoring the original image, if you choose to do so). That way when you later verify support for your hardware, you can simply restore the image of the upgraded OS instead of attempting a 2nd upgrade (which MS may reject since you will have already done the upgrade).

Microsoft may not know the answer either. There's likely only one way to find out.
Hi,
@Jan: What OS are you running currently?
Basically, anything that runs under Win 8 or 8.1 should work with Win 10 as well.
As others suggested, making a working system backup or using a different HDD for the new install is sound advise.
I've been on one of the testing teams for the past 15 years for MS and to my mind Win7 was by far the best OS they ever made. Only bettered by the server version really.
That aside, it is not Microsoft's responsibility to ensure hardware works on their OS but the people that manufacture the hardware.
Cheers, 😉
P.S I suppose there's a good reason you posted this in the "Snake Oil" thread??? 😉

Thanks, good advice. Am running W7 currently on all machines. I DO think it is Microsoft responsibility to ensure forward driver compatibility. You can't expect manus to design for what does not exist for years to come.

Hi,
Jan, if your gear required proprietary drivers running W7 it may well need proprietary drivers fro Win 10 or it could run using the old ones from W7.
Either way, Microsoft don't provide much drivers of their own bar the basic ones that every machine/device needs to run.
Cheers, 😉

I know that - I've build device drivers in DOS times 😉
But M$ does specify the interface for 3rd party drivers, so they should make sure that drivers designed according to that interface spec should also work in W10. But I'm not optimistic.
Sorry - back to regular programming...

Currently I am holding off Windows 10 both for home use with Lightroom and at work for PCB design and 3D mechanical (Cadstar, Inventor and AutoCAD) I cannot afford any problems or down time so I am waiting till the software has been in regular use... Still on W7 for the same reason.
Though I do understand that placing 4 of these under any PC or Laptop will make your software run 25% faster with less data drop out and an overall reduction in internam EMC based noise....

The review it linked to was, I thought, one of the stupidest things I ever read. Then I noticed that the "reviewer" was also in the business of selling complementary questionable items with wild and unsupported claims.
