The tweeters I'm using do about 107dB/1W.
Not sure I'd call that "Power Soak". Still an amp that produces 1.5-3W at 1%THD simply isn't cutting the mustard, especially since I insist on 12dB headroom and 1% is audibly too high for me.

Btw It was Trent Reznor (he is NIN) who called that version audiophile. Nothing to do with what people are thinking.

Denney: We don't use any pure silver or copper in our interconnects—it's all alloys. They have better measurable characteristics at 1GHz than do silver or copper, and in subjective listening tests seem to have a more developed midrange and are texturally more complete. We picked up that technology by working with aerospace engineers.
1GHz 😱 that's useful at audio frequencies! Better get a set of Dolphin speakers that Pano mentioned, between recipes.
aerospace engineers, where have I heard them mentioned before?

What are they thinking when they demo horns/SETs with Kraftwerk?

I'm not aware of any SETs producing >50W at <0.1%THD with a DF of over 200 which are my minimum requirements for my tweeters. ;-)

Personally and to my ears the very qualities which make valve amps so irreplaceable for instrument amplification makes them unsuitable for my stereo.

I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on this one so we should probably leave it at that and refrain from further derailing this or any other thread.
What do you think?

Well, we could carry on I guess but I'm not sure what else there is to say.

Mind you there are times when I'm tempted to get one for supertweeters.
Not so much as an amp, more of an effects box really. In this case as a harmonics generator for digital playback, just to see if those missing harmonics above 20k really increase listening pleasure as some research seems to suggest. ;-)

I'm curious, that all. Thinking about it last night I can see that if you want 118dB/1M peaks and 12dB of headroom, you'd need a 50W RMS amp for those tweeters.

What I don't understand is why you'd need that for domestic listening. For P.A. use, sure. Getting 118 dB peak is nice, but do I really need 12dB headroom above that? I simply have not come across any domestic listening systems that need that much tweeter. A 5 watt amp on 107dB/1W tweeter is more than loud enough for any system I've heard. Bigger spaces, tweeter attenuation, live sound, etc. - sure. The power needs go up fast. Is that what you are doing? I'd like to know what has led you to your choices. Thanks.

I want clean peaks of around 120dB, the headroom is because I never ever want to get my amps close to clipping. Plenty of headroom assures that the system sounds effortless at all levels. Which it does since no matter how casual I am with the volume it never sounds stressed or different in any way. The only 'downside' is that it is quite difficult to tell how loud it actually is without trying to talk to someone.
The upside is that regardless of how loud and for how long I listen it has never induced any ringing in my ears which in my experience is mostly caused by excess distortion.

As to what the onset of clipping is depends on your own definition.
The people who made my phono pre define it as the point where THD reaches -80dB (0.01%) while MC2 Audio who made my power amps use -70dB (0.03%).

As it happens I actually use a 175W amp on my tweeters, mostly because that is the smallest amp MC2 make.

If you want to see some real power merchants have a look at Quested, ATC or PMC main monitors which happen to be the best speakers I have ever heard. That is what I'm after, just a bit scaled down and more befitting for my humble abode.

The idea is to get as close to what it sounded like in the studio using my limited resources. But the path was very clear: It had to be active with plenty of headroom under all circumstances. The only real choice was to go for ATC or Volt woofers.
I chose Volt as they were a bit cheaper and more efficient.
In the last 10 or 12 years I have not come across anything which made me want to change anything in my stereo. That is a situation I very much like.
In the end due to careful s/h purchases and diy my entire system owes me less than one PMC XB2 costs retail of which I have built two.

I see Charlie's 'the dirty sand man's' latest bit of advice in Stereophool is that cable lifters made of cheaper wood perform almost as good as the more expensive ones.

Oh my gosh! You mean I could cut my own little foil triangles out of duct tape to put on my door corners too! :smash:

We do now need to be careful about "directional cable" as HDMI cables containing the Redmere amplifier chip do in fact need to be plugged in correctly.
