how hard could it be to source something made from sheep in Aus?, wool, felt???

I did have that same thought... 🙂

Australian Merino Sheep

The Merino or jackson sheep is an economically influential breed of sheep prized for its wool. The breed originated in Spain, but the modern Merino was domesticated in New Zealand and Australia. Today, Merinos are still regarded as having some of the finest and softest wool of any sheep. Poll Merinos have no horns (or very small stubs, known as scurs), and horned Merino rams have long, spiral horns which grow close to the head.
The best wool to get!

In 2013, the five countries with the largest number of heads of sheep were mainland China (175 million), Australia (75.5 million), India (53.8 million)...
No less than a second place worldwide...

😀

I wish I found this thread earlier. I jumped on the same sale at PE for the TC9. Saw it in my email and I got them to go down to $10.50 from their $11 sale price. I am young so I devoted a lot of time in 2-3 weeks to build them. I guarantee you will enjoy them when you are done! (Don't know how to post pics from my phone.. will later)

I think I saw your version in another thread, looked nice with some veneered panels.

Don't assume, measure... 😀

It's way easier to find a recipe with a single speaker box and repeat that than having regrets later on.

No assumptions being made here 😀

I appreciate your input and I do understand your point. I have tried to test as many parts of the construction as I can to get a good result first time.

With the materials I have available I can only see one or maybe two ways to use them so my test scenarios are pretty limited. By testing I will know ahead of time roughly what I will get but without much of a way to change it if the result isn't quite what I want 🙁

I have to pick my battles at the moment if I want to get these finished in a reasonable time frame, but until I glue the front baffle on I can still make changes more easily so who knows...

Tip for gluing:
You should mask along either side of a glue joint with masking tape. It's then MUCH easier to clean up after the glue dries.

Thanks for the input, I have used that method before and where I can I often pre finish the panels as it is much easier to remove the squeeze out off a finished panel than it is the bare wood.

I took a quick snap just after clamping so the squeeze out is pretty visible in the picture. 5 minutes later I had used my little plastic scraper to remove it all when it had solidified but before it had dried if that makes sense. I find this works better than taping. The whole thing will be covered in glue to stick on the leather look fabric anyway 😀

Well I can see why you would think that, but consider that Australia is one of the largest exporters of Liquified Natural Gas but there is a gas shortage in the local market 🙄

I have found a very nice felt for the baffle edges but the cost was horrendous for the amount I have. I also live in a rural part of Australia and postage costs are also horrendous for large items generally, volumetrically a roll of felt is expensive to ship, up to three times the cost of the item 😱

You will just have to trust me that I have tried and failed so far 😀 I do have an unplanned trip to a larger town next week so I might be able to rustle some up there 🙂

Interestingly, though the Chinese may have more sheep, Australia perennially claims the record for the finest wool. It's from the opposite corner of the country from Fluid, and it's devastatingly expensive: ~AU$300k for a single bale of 11 micron merino wool. Even utter audiophools wouldn't be using that stuff as stuffing! 😀

I have thought of a way to run a test with my cabinet but with only 5 drivers that can have the stuffing scheme changed without too much effort.

If I install 5 drivers on the bottom of the baffle but don't glue it down I can use a gasket and clamps to keep the baffle in place for the test but then be removed afterwards.

I can't get the same wiring with 5 drivers, but I can get to 9.6ohm combined. The exact impedance measured would be different but the issues from the cabinet should still be there in a relative sense. Perhaps this is a reasonable compromise?

No they are saving up for the $600K premium version that was carded by virgins and lubricated with snake oil!

Sheep have many uses here
Just ask the Kiwi's, they probably got their ideas from the Welsh 😀

Some more progress today.

I have cut the strips to fit in the dados to fill in the gap that the CNC people left me by not reading my drawings properly 🤐

Here's one for Brisso, I taped the dado channels to make sure no glue got in them to make fitting the braces more difficult

The back is glued on one now, I couldn't get much glue in as it was virtually a press fit, turns out the weights have been more useful for building speakers 🙂

Bunnings has felt underlay but it's a bit thin
https://www.bunnings.com.au/qep-110-x-850cm-laminate-and-floating-floor-felt-underlay_p6650146

These guys are meant to be good
JJ Davies

The nearest Bunnings is 1200Km away but thanks for the thought

I bought my baffle felt from a place in Perth that distributes the same felts as JJ Davies. They had some removalist felt that I enquired about but it was going to cost a lot because of the minimum order size so I didn't get it.
