Dave - If you want a nice picture I'll set them up and take something more suiting if you want it for something other than personal purposes... That is if you don't like one of the images above. Short answer YES, just say which one or if you'd like something more in suiting let me know.

Rullknufs - No these are 4" drivers but the frames are a tad larger and fit almost exactly to the inside edge of the 5.5 grills plastic flange, neo's are burried under the veneer.

That would be great. I want to put them in a collage of builds for the plans document. I really should send you a copy with all the updates, but it probablt worth waiting for the trapezoids.

FH MK3 veneered and finished!

Finally done my FH MK3s. Running with CHP-70 (gen-1) drivers now. Really good match. Been listening to Metallica, Overkill, and now Megadeth. At my wimpy listening levels (70-75 dB) paired with a 5 watt/channel amp these are pulling nicely. Speakers sound much bigger than 4 inchers. With EL-70 I get even for more oomph.

Nice, how's the HF?

Since these are gen 1 CHP-70, the top end is not rolled off like the Gen 2 CHP (BTW, which I have not listened to yet). Being paper cones they are as not as bright as the CHR-70; the HF is non-fatiguing but sounds adequate to me - close to that of the EL-70; the EL-70 to my ears is more extended both on top and bottom.

Very nice Zia! Those look fantastic!! I really want to build a set when I get more space.

Thanks Scott. Good sounding design (besides the uncommon look 🙂), they have a nice character. Plays well with Alp 7.3 too.

Will post some better pics shortly.

Wood Planar Single Driver Planar Speakers

hi guys!
has anybody build some kind of planar speakers using these body shakers or exciters?
just wondering...

Like these?😉 They sound okay, but aren't hi-fi. The ones in the video sound great with solo cello and solo violin. Great conversation piece for the diy uninitiated.

Just recently finished my 3rd or so pair of speakers, best so far both aesthetically and sonically. These are Pass BOFU TLs (or TQWTs?). It's a straightforward build with a helper tweeter using a 4.7uF "crossover." Faceplate is from leftover 5/4 x 6 "philippine mahogany" from a deck project, glued together, cut to size and "inlaid" with zebrawood and some maple scraps I had lying around. They warped and the glue didn't want to hold, but I got it to work in the end. I'd do it with a solid piece next time, but I like the 5/4 thickness.

Can't seem to upload any more photos, so here's a link for now:

Left side is on a plywood base, right isn't. Shows some of the associated gear; TTs and CDP, Yaqin MS-12B phono stage, Marsh 200A amp (currently not using), Bottlehead Quickie preamp (currently not in use) and 3 DIY amps (a SE Mosfet amp, a SE pentode amp and a PP tube amp). Let's just say my wife is very understanding and supportive.

From the ideal listener position. Vandersteen 1Cs sit next to the BOFUs. I am very impressed by these BOFUs - Thanks Nelson! They have plenty of low end for me, are reasonably fast and detailed, yet forgiving and not fatiguing (in my VERY limited experience, fast/detailed usually means fatiguing and not forgiving on bad source material). I'm liking them more than the Vandys right now.
