Great - Is this the right thread to listen for updates on the 6" model? Thanks.
Probably, but we've got to finish the design first before deciding how it'll be released. 😉
...on to the 6" frugal, i'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll be flexible enough to work well with the 166es-r drivers i have.
Indeed they do.
Sounds like a plan. Here's another pair that have been done with that finish, albeit with a solid ash front baffle: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/172605-frugel-horn-mk3-9.html#post2460567
I've seen those pics, I really like the look of them.
I did put that style past the wife, however she is more keen on the full gloss white paint finish compared to a combo or full timber veneer look. (part of the deal was letting her choose her preferred finish!) I'm happy with that, I reckon the white will look pretty good.

Sounds familiar, I had to make to same deal before I started building 🙂!
When they are done, show us some pics please.
Hehe, yep, if it means I get to make them, I've got no complaints!
I will post pics when they are done.

I'm very interested in a 6"/166es-r version as well......on to the 6" frugal, i'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll be flexible enough to work well with the 166es-r drivers i have.
Don't hold your breath yet. As I said, we're still in the process of designing it, and I really don't have time to devote to it at the moment.
Getting closer to the finished product...
9mm marine ply front panel glued to the front so the driver now sits flush. Also gave them a paint of oil based undercoat in preparation for the final caots of gloss enamel.

Hi Paulwd,
Your speakers are looking good.
Just for information, when painting my FH3's I lightly rubbed down the paintwork with 320 grade production paper before the final coat, to reduce any brushmarks. I then applied the top coat with a small 4 inch roller which completely obscured any remaining brush marks and gave a pleasing 'orange peel' like finish.
I used oil based eggshell paint which is quite durable (tough), to better withstand the inevitable collisions with the vacuum cleaner.
Regards,
Graham

yah, the new micro-fiber paint rollers leave a very subtle textured paint finish - if painting, I'd be inclined to use them for the primer / base coats as well
but I generally use a sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer finish
Thanks guys,
I was going to use a good quality brush for the final coats, but those microfibre rollers definitely look like a better way to go.

I couldn't find a supplier for felting here in the UK.
Eileen suggested Hanging Basket Liner so I bought a small roll on eBay.
I think it will do the job just fine.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Jim,
If you pm me your address I'll post you some ½" thick wool carpet underlay for the internal damping for the cost of the postage. It's the stuff I use.
Would be better than the basket lining stuff, hey🙂

Dear Colin,
That's very kind of you to offer that, I wish I'd asked what to use before, I've already glued 2 laters around the centre baffle and into one of the sides just waiting to put a third layer on the baffle.
Warmest wishes - Jim

Very modernist. Looks like they've come off the set of 2001. Or Ken Shuttleworth's Crescent House.
I like them... is that a pair of CHR sitting on the B&Ws waiting to be installed?
Will be very interested in comments vis-s-vis the B&Ws.
SE 300B or 2A3? The preamp?
