Mini review: Class-D Designs NX200 vs Hypex

Recently I built a Hypex stereo amplifier and was really thrilled with the results and thought it was the best amplifier I had ever heard, posted here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=133639&highlight=.

In the discussions It was mentioned that the Class-D Designs NX200 amplifier was a match for the Hypex and in fact perhaps even better. http://www.classd.ltd.uk/product.php?productid=16269 This intrigued me as I thought it was nearly impossible to improve on the Hypex and wondered if other people had found the same http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134498&highlight= but didn't get any satisfactory results as no one has seemed to have listened to one.

As they are so inexpensive compared with Hypex I decided to take the bull by the horns and try them out for myself. I bought the NX200s (which incidentally are not Class-D but Class AB amplifiers so would satisfy the purists) connected them up using the Hypex switch mode power supply and set back to listen to really superb sound.
All the clarity, dynamics and more was there compared to the Hypex and to my ears I thought the presence and soundstage was a little better.
All that I said about the Hypex in my review above can be applied to these NX200s so I'm not going to repeat myself here.

When you consider the price of the NX200s compared with the Hypex amplifiers, to my mind, the NX200s win hands down.
These amplifiers are crying out for someone to organise a Group Buy and depending on the quantities one could get them for as little as £26 each compared with £120 each for the Hypex. It's a no-brainer.

Incidentally, before someone starts jumping up and down I have no connection with any company and these views are my own personal ones.

Good work cirrus, the first sonic report on these modules & a resounding positive conclusion it seems. Just beats the Hypex modules is high praise & with the value for money - it's a no-brainer as you said . I see on the other thread that you bought the Hypex 180HG with HxR modules (€220) which is their fully tweaked up version, I think.

Good to see the modules being evaluated sonically rather than the name of the company, the bad communication, the quality of the soldering, etc.

Although I think Class-D haven't done themselves any favours with this free module offer as a lot of winners seem not to have received them.

My friend The Guitarist has been using NX400s on the bass end of his active system driving Peerless XLS 12s pretty hard for a few months now. Decent sized heatsinks have been used- canibalised Moth 100 monobloc cases and PSUs- no issues at all in use so far. Solid, punchy bass. Still hasn't been used full range, and I still haven't had time to try mine yet...

Just a quick note to say that after contacting class D through the forum mail here, I received promptly my nx400 module. I have a very busy month ahead of me, but hope to lash up something to test the amp board shortly

Construction looks reasonable at first glance, however I have not had a very close look as yet...

After a little digging, I get the accusation. If your joking, I'm not seeing the funny side.

Quite frankly I am totally fed up with this thread...

I used to look upon diyaudio as being a friendly place and a community that I enjoyed hanging out in.. Frankly that has not been my experiance recently.

My spare time has been more limited recently, and I am finding myself less inclined to visit here in what time I do have left for surfing. So if you don't see me here as much (if at all) then pat yourselves on the back and say well done! It takes a fair bit of effort to alienate people, nice to see dedication to a cause!

So long and thanks for all the fish!

How can you expect to get something when no address is sent

Incidentally we have 3 others without addresses but of course this is bound to happen

If its a genuine forum for genuine discussion why hide behind silly names just give us your address at sales@class-d.com and we will send instead of this perpetual slagging off

It's great to see a bit of civility in this thread - too many threads are turning toxic on this forum. Gods knows we have enough toxicity in the world today!!

I reckon if the moderators are particularly vigilant (for a while anyway), & these type of posts are removed quickly before it kicks everything off then these toxic posters will soon get fed-up posting messages which are immediately removed & have no effect.

This would make this forum a more pleasant experience for everyone who is interested in DIY. I for one will make it my business to report objectionable posts to the moderators (something I've never done before). If everybody does this & the moderators are able to handle it, it should shortly clear up the problem by and large

Could,nt agree more the moderators should just chuck them of, especially when they openly claim they are only on to cause trouble. Its just a small core of them all with a hidden agenda which frankly will get them no where We all have to live and carry on business and our lives.

All we have done is offer people on DIY audio the opportunity to buy good equipment at a price they can afford. If somebody knows better than us or can advise us please feel free we are open to critisism. Also in the same breath we may have a bit to offer ourselves.

We have all the top test gear 2 lecroy 4 channel 500 mgs scopes and 2 tectronix scopes plus other scopes signal gens and Audio precision test gear we are more than happy to discuss things with people

We can supply modules at good price because it is just a spin off from our main business which incidently supplies some of the top players in the world.

At this moment we have just completed a deal to make us even more competetive and offer a much larger range of products including switchmode power supplies, pots, caps and all audio components including circuit boards and boxes. This should all be in place in the next few weeks.

Just to clear something else up everything for the modules is UK made however we do actually supply the chinese and it looks as if that is about to get very much larger.

So john well said, yes we can do without it, the stupid slagging and hassle that is.

Hey leo,
If you get the chance & feel up to it, why don't you take them up on their offer & visit them & post a report back here. I know you will be shown all the best bits but it might give another view of their operation apart from what has gone down here?

I know I sound like their PR arm but honestly, I've no connection with them whatsoever, just want to see an organisation get fair treatment.
