NHT closeout and suggestions for mods
Merry XMAS!
I'm looking for suggestions, and some opinions. First, I'm interested in those AR woofers, and the Jensen woofers that Jack has listed for sale. He has been great offering suggestions to everyone for all of those drivers on sale. The only thing holding me back right now is the woofers age...they are about 12 years old. Would there be any issues with surrounds, cones, etc at this point?
Second: I have a pair of the Madisound black oak cabinets with the NHT 1259 woofers just laying around here unused. I'm building a high efficiency 4 way, and still have not selected anything for the range of 35hz to 200 hz. Been looking at JBL, AE, and also that Jensen woofer due to low cost. I'd like to hear any suggestions of what I could do with that 3.5 cf sealed Madisound cabinet to work with this range. I first thought about those cheap AR drivers, maybe an isobaric configuration, added drivers, etc. Mine do not have the plate amp. I did beef up the bracing a bit. The height of that cabinet works okay, but it can also be laid on its side if needed.
The whole system is active, and I have plenty of amps and electronic crossovers. The midbass is TAD 1201, then JBL 2344a, then JBL 2404. Currently no eq, but do plan to buy some. I do not want to build subs. Is this project a waste of time? Any ideas
Thanks!

NHT 1259
SY:
Nothing is wrong with the 1259. They are a good woofer. My concern is that they simply will not keep up with the TAD midbass at 100db with 1 watt, or any of the JBL horns.
I'm trimming out my new audio room right now, and carpet is coming January 5-6. Those 1259 are sitting in a box. It occurred to me that at least I can fire them up and use them in the new room with the rest of the system until I figure out what I will do for the permanent bottom end. I started with the JBL 2226, and then looked at the JBL 2242, and now are really looking hard at the AE TD15 series. All of those require pretty big boxes. I don't want to get off the subject here, but I really don't want to have to move around speakers that end up weighing 200# or more for each bass box. Also don't want subs. I've looked at Sonotube, and lots of other ideas, but someone always discourages me from any of the more radical ideas due to standing waves, resonance or some other concerns.
That got me thinking about what is sitting unused in the box, and what might be done quickly and cheaply. I don't have any modeling software, so I have to play it a bit safer or get suggestions from others. The first thought along those lines was those $30 AR woofers that Jack is selling, just because it is the same frame as the 1259. The current 1259 is different from mine, which I confirmed with Larry@ Madisound, since I bought my stuff there in person. Like I said, this might be a waste of time, but frankly those cabinets at 9 years old are not worth much on the market, so I'd don't mind experimenting with them.
Thanks for any ideas!

Nature's way of telling you to biamp. In my biamped system, I have no trouble hitting 105dB+ with the 1259s showing no signs of distress.
It's possible to have deep bass and high efficiency, but not with 3.5 cu ft.

SY: the project is quad amped already. I have a Rotel RB993, the 3 channel, 200-wpc job available for the bass box at this time.
The TAD and JBL parts of the system can play a lot, lot louder than 105 db with very low distortion. This is not a contest for me to see how loud it can play, but the original concept of the project was for dynamics, great sound, and low distortion. I just never got around to building the bass boxes due to the aforementioned problems. Just to clarify that, I built a multiple layer (MDF and Apple Ply) truncated cabinet for the TAD's, heavily braced, 1.6cf internal net volume. Those suckers weigh nearly 100 pounds each. That is why I stopped on the bass bins, because they would have ended up at about 300 or more pounds each if I had gone the same route, but with 8-10 cf.
I really like the idea of something like a sonotube inside of another sonotube, and sand filled between. I may play with that. But, I digress.
With the NHT 1259, can I add another to the existing box, and then use PR's or something on that order? I also like the idea of an isobaric arrangement. I would think that if I router out the front of the box where the driver mounts currently, I might be able to fit another 1259 behind the existing one.
Thanks!

An isobaric is great if you're trying to buck an overly large Vas, but won't help with efficiency or SPL. If I had two more drivers, I'd want to use the extra air-moving capability. It might be interesting to stick them in your existing boxes, then use a Variovent. If that doesn't give good results, there's always the Linkwitz transform.
My 1259s are in M3.3 boxes, driven by 500W Sunfire plate amps. I have two more, just waiting for the day that I move out of this temporary apartment and can really let the dBs loose!

How will NHT closure affect Jack?
NHT Closing
Will this affect your inventory/supply? Does this mean you're out of work? If so, let's get this guy some orders fellas (even if not, these are bargains!)

Actually it is going to be unbelievably good for the DIYers here.
NHT has a large number of discontinued parts, WIP (work in progress) and discontinued products. I've been asked to help sell them off on my site. I'm going to start adding things to the site later this week.
There are going to be some deals that are really going to blow your guy's minds!!! Stay tuned.
One thing I'd like to clarify is that NHT isn't going out of business. The way Chris described it in the linked article is they are "going cold". The best way I can describe it is they are rebooting. When will they turn back on? Not sure. What operating system will they be running? Not sure.

Cool Jack.
I check your site pretty often just as a matter of course- I keep holding off on those nice jensen woofers (a 4.5 ft^3 enclosure is a design sweetspot in tolerable size, and they model VERY nicely in one)
Looking forward to seeing the toys- maybe some of the sub drivers.

I've added a couple new things to the website tonight. Virtually complete loudspeakers and an active crossover!!! Just build the crossover. We're selling these complete loudspeakers for less than the retail price of the woofer in each of them!!!!
I've also added a number of drivers to the spreadsheet. It's going to take me all week to get all of the data populated into the spreadsheet for them. There are still going to be more drivers added, but I figured that what I put up there was the most desirable.
By the end of the week, I think I will also have at least two more essentially complete systems listed on the site.
At the prices these systems are up for, I don't expect them to last long.

wow, nice deals on the completed speakers and kits!
I see you've got the individual drivers on the excel sheet, and a lot that aren't on the web page. Am I safe to assume these will be sold off separate from the completed systems?
Thanks.

There are some drivers, the XdS woofer for instance, that there are more drivers than cabinets. The extra woofers will be sold off individually.
By the end of the week, I should have more data up on the new individual drivers.

Crossovers, including transfer functions and system frequency response have been added for the M-20, M-60 and XdS systems.

Jack,
great sounding deal on the xds satellite at 100.00 ea. but the NHT site says i also need the 3300.00 dollar xda to make it work ??? that kinda sours the deal unless that is just slick advertising. so, can i buy these, build the crossover and plug them into my home theater unit ?

Yes, they will work with your receiver once you build the passive crossover. Make sure that your receiver has an adjustable crossover for the small speaker mode. For the XdS, you want to set it to at least 100Hz. Ideally 120Hz. It is only a 5.25" woofer in a small box, so it has real limitations on how loud it can play at low frequencies.
You obviously are not going to get anywhere near the same performance out of the XdS, then if it were conneted to an XdA.

Jack,
wow, thanks for quick reply. yeah i am suffering a high end audio desire on an old bose am5 budget haha. i think they will sound better than those bose cubes even without the 3300.00 xda unit. if my yamaha unit won't work i'm sure my denon will.
i did not research the xda unit so is there an equivalent or is this a propietary relationship between the xd's ? sorry for the questions but i am way new to all this.
