FLH design basics for a dummy

Gotta bail out on this project for a while, just thought I'd say something about it. The reason for delay has to do with it being my busy season.... 85% of my work each year gets done during the 6 month period surrounding summer. I simply don't have any spare time now, so this project will be restarted in late fall/early winter here on latitude 48.

There has been some progress though. I did get the LIMP working great by wiping winDOS 7 and replaced it with a slipstreamed custom XP version of winDOS. Its very stable and very consistent now, more than I hoped for in fact.

I rolled some better caps (and bumped the coupling caps from 100 up to 1000uF) into the cheap USB audio card and got that strong and flat down to sub-20 Hz now too. The impedance jig flattened out nicely too, after finally finding... then swapping in a Dale non-inductance 100 ohm (2 1/2 watt) resistor. The entire LIMP setup as built on the cheap is quite impressive now, in my opinion.

I also built a couple mono measurement mics from the JLI clones of the discontinued Panasonic WM-61A electret module using the Linkwitz mod schematic (and powered by 9 volt battery), similar to the one LilMike posted on AVS. Both work great, so I'll probably see about sending them out for Calibration files before winter.

The IDMAX12 didn't quite get there yet though, as I haven't had enough time to break it in. The Fs is dropping fast each time its exercised and is getting closer to spec, now at 28.3 Hz and still dropping. I just don't have time to babysit the tiny amps right now, so back on the shelf it went.

If all goes well this summer I may talk myself into buying a better driver for a big outdoor FLH. In that case the IDMAX won't be needed and I'll be breaking in something else.

The more I learn, the more I accomplish, the more I want. So... I'll be looking at PA 15 and 18 inchers and will model a bunch of them later on. The B&C models with very strong motors and decent Xmax are attractive looking.... and there are several other brands in that class too. I'm looking forward to finding one that will work good in a horn. If any of you have a favorite 15" or 18" horn driver you'd like to share, I'm all ears!

Thanks again to all who have taught me so much and helped me get started. Especially, thank you GM, Weltersys and others, too numerous to list. And thank you just a guy for all your contributions thus far. Without your help throughout this thread I would have been failing miserably and learned very little. But I'm not going to fail... with a humble tip of my hat, top of the day to ya!

Beware the several trolls/paid agents working here... they may try to gang you... get you to respond to something that gets you banned. Its the only hope they have... so be vigilant and please be careful.

With Respect,
