gareth, do you have any reasons that you stick with your choice of drivers? Is it because you already own them?

If not, what's your budget? What kind of cabinet were you thinking of? Perhaps, vented floorstanders?


Thanks for your interest and yes I already own these drivers and bought them as I thought it would be a fairly inexpensive first project.

I was thinking along the lines of a small (ish) floorstander. When I have used formulas from Vance Dickassons cookbook, based on the T/S parameters supplied by Audax, a cabinet of 42litres was specified for a tuning frequency of about 37Hz.

I was planning on using 1inch Mdf for the baffle and 0.75inch plywood for the remainder of the cabinet.

For obvious reasons I would like to stick to using these drivers, even if they may have been the wrong choice. At the time of purchase I did not have a great range to choose from as I did not have the internet.

I'm no expert but 2000hz for an 8" driver... doesn't sound good to me. Besides, as long are you are spending money on shipping all the way to the UK, might as well do it on drivers worth the time, energy and shipping fees.... just my opinion.

The couple of projects i found googling use 3Khz xovers for these tweeters.... they must be OK, Rod Elliott used them!!!

What's the model no of the Wharfedale units you have, do you have specs of these?

I think you'll probably end up with a better system using these, and adding the Audax woofers to make a 2.5 way system (simpler to design and set up than a 3 way)

Bet you didn't think it wopuld be this complicated did you? 🙂

The advice on using a predesigned system is sound. However, you can learn a lot by doing it yourself. If youwere to say goa head and build something, well a couple of things could happen, one is you could fall in love with the way the speakers sound, or two you could be disapointed.

What I predict is that you will be initially impressed, and then over time start to 'hear' the deficiencies of your speaker. One good thing then is that you will then know what you like and what you don't like. Personally, I think that a two way with an 8" woofer can be had, you would just have to use a diferent tweeter, and likely sacrifice in the upper freq, say above 12-15kHz. Most people can't hear much above that anyway, although most people say having these upper freqs give the music something, even if you can't hear well at theose freqs.


Anyway I ramble, Take the advice here, or not, but whatever you do, go ahead and build your speaker, you will enjoy the process, and the speaker immensely, even if you end up scrapping it eventually.

It crosses low enough to make easy use of an 8" (1000hz). The tweeter doe go up to about 15,000hz : http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/resp3.gif

Jay, thanks for your offer of support anf to be honest after reading all these posts I think I just might take you up on your offer.

I already have a basic knowledge of what the different crossovers are cabable of, their roll-off's, phase change ( up to 360° ) etc etc which is why I needed to ask about the drivers I have.

If the offer still stands I would very much appreciate your help.

That leads to the question whether the tweeter can handle being crossed over at <2KHz...

Hi Pete, I know that there was a Hi-Fi World speaker in the past using this tweeter and an Audax HM210Z0 bass. I think it was called the
KLS 9.

Apparently this was a somewhat successfull design and sounded very good for the cost involved. I just hope that I can produce a good loudspeaker myself, and if not....then I have tried and I will learn. So now to the home brewed B&W Nautilus......or maybe not.

Thanks Roger, I agree with you. Maybe for a couple of weeks or months I will think that these are the anly speakers on the earth and like you say I may start to pick holes and find faults.

For now though I want to 'plough on' with the project and learn taking all the advice I can ( I hope ).

Thanks Peter, this certainly is food for thought. A crossover at 1000Hz and good dispersion characteristics. Do you know what instruments fall into differing frequency ranges ? I think I read somewher about the male and female voices being aroud 2000 - 2300Hz. Do you know if this is correct ?

i wouldnt base my choice of crossover point on a certain sounds frequency range. base it on the drivers and their optimum operation ranges, everything else would be an intentional design error. especially with those shallow analog crossovers, it is difficult enough to find a good point, where both drivers add just fine.
