Fertin project - calling all open baffle experts

It's pretty well settled in as last reported. They are so revealing of upstream happenings that I'm finally getting joy from silver. Slowly changing everything to silver: silver TVC, 2 x 30g silver IC, 2 x 25g silver speaker wire. Just keeps getting sil(v)kier. I got my inspiration from Kondo a few weeks ago at HK Hifi show. The Fertin's/open baffles really let me hear the glory of silver. Best described as 'charm'.

:att'n: I've concluded that the journey to open-baffledom is strictly one-way. Going back to boxes, even with their over stuffed bass-slam, is now unthinkable. Be warned.

Still using the PP 45 since my 300B mono's are on the operating table getting a major rebuild.

I will soon have a 6C45 SET amp. Should put out same power as a 45 SET but no driver tube needed. Will report the results with the Fertin when the time comes.

Two complaints:
1. No response from Fertin to be able to order more. Don't know what has happened to Michel Prin; doesn't answer his phone, faxes or email. Some that come to my office want to order some too, but I can't spread the joy!
2. On one driver, the bolts holding the suspension for the cone comes loose from time to time and needs to be tightened. I'll have to paint that one down

(3) This is not my complaint since I don't miss Diana Krall not standing on her piano when she sings or Ben Webster's head sprouting a saxophone: Some can not get past the driver position being so low to the floor. One customer sat on hte floor! Maybe they're hearing (needing) something I don't, but some object to the low sound stage. Maybe it's triggered by the visuals; maybe it would be better on a non-carpeted floor. It doesn't bother me. When I close my eyes, things are where they should be, but imaging has never been my priority.

Gotta get to painting those drivers on the wall to lift the soundstage.

Useful Observation: With my pr, I can not use voltage as the reference to set the fieldcoil current. I had to put an ampmeter in series and take an actual current reading. To get 1amp, one driver is at 10.9V, the other 12.5V. Now they both run at the same temperature with output from both sides equal.

SILVER TONE

Hi Brian

I'm finally getting joy from silver. Slowly changing everything to silver: silver TVC, 2 x 30g silver IC, 2 x 25g silver speaker wire.

The better the system the more silver you will want to put in.

Glad to see you enjoy it.

Were those links to these companies on where to gat silver wire any use?

Cheers,

😉

Thanks Frank. I took a look but couldn't find the bare silver wire I'm interested in. I'll send them an email. Kondo? Wow! And AN(UK) too? Then I've hit the mother-lode!

LOOK UNDER...

Hi Brian,

A website is of course just a soundboard.

Look under accesories and you'll find bare wires.
The man behind it is one of my best friends, his daytime job is selling wire for the biggest minimg company (you sort it out).

Years ago my now defunct company was commissioned to design I/C,LS and digital wire for them.
The results are still there unaltered after ten years and some major cartridge manufacturers are using these as well.
The rest you can see from the distributors list.
I don't like to talk commercial here but the benefits are so great and ultimately affordable that I can't keep quiet about it.

I'm getting poorer by the minute...😀

Ah well,😀

ATD Veravox 7

Has anyone ever heard, or heard-of, this ATD near full range driver? You think this could be an OB candidate?

These drivers have been advertised in Speaker Builder, and now aX for a couple of years at least. They look well thought out and possibly suitable for an OB, but I've never heard them, or know anyone who has.

If you get some please let us know what you think of them.

Fertin group buy

Bernhard,

Have you had any luck with Fertin or his minions? I'm ready to do this thing in the next seven days, and have the choice of a new Ortofon SPU Silver Meister plus a rebuild on my Ortofon SL15E (I bent the %*&#$^@ cantilever) or getting the field coil drivers.

What to do, what to do. Black Forest will happily sell the Fertins to me, at what I suspect is a higher number than otherwise. But not if no one else is offering to sell.

I'm a big boy and can make my own decisions, but it would be nice to have a choice of Fertin suppliers and prices.

Thanks.

Hi Peter,

don't do the Meister Silver, it was one of my not so great cartridge experiences. The GM/E or the Royal are better.

I have tried quite a dozen SPUs so far, and finally got 3 good sounding samples.

SPU

Harmut,

Thanks for the comment. There are many on this side of the Atlantic that would disagree with you. I'm not in a position to have an opinion, yet.

I have had a GM Classic on my SME 3012R for a year which is probably the most musical combination I've ever heard. Several have said that the only upgrade to this is to the Silver Meister, not the Royal. I'n not too sure what the real difference between the two is.

I also have a Royal N that I'm running on my ET-2 that shows great promise, but is a veerrry slow break in (since May.) It's just now starting to show the life the GM Classic does, but ought to outdo the Classic when I can get some more time on it.

I can do a GME with no problem. Do you recommend that over the Royal GM at this point? (I confess to a certain preference to the conical styli. I think my Denon DL103 is more musical than my DL103D.) It might be better to not make the big jump in the aluminum headshell cartridges and do it gradually, instead. Your further comment would be welcome.

Thanks. (Maybe I can afford a GME *and* the Fertins!)

Peter C

YOU'RE NOT ALONE.

Hi Peter,

Sure it would be nice to be able to afford both of it.

I think my Denon DL103 is more musical than my DL103D

Having had at least a dozen of 103s' and gotten sidetracked by a 103D I was always happy to return to the 103.

I admit I modded quite a few of these with a new housing made out of antimonium or playing these babes stripped nude.
Add a SME 3009 and you're in good audio company.

Cheers,😉

Peter C,
nothing achieved yet, i was occupied with other stuff. MKV-group deal, forum stuff, private stuff.

If you can give me a few more days, i try to get Fertin's adress; Jean MIchel LeCleac'h told me he could get it and would also be helpful with eventual translations.

But i can promise you that i will not have response from Fertin within 7 days. So if your patience is running out, go ahaed and buy at BlackForest.

All,
wanna see the Fertin's grandpa?

re Royal slow running in: you can make the process faster by playing some few hours with coarsly misadjusted VTA, say 1/4" less and the same amount more height at the tonearm end. It did it for me. Before, I thought the cartridge would be too much on the hifi side of music. After, it was simply excellent.

My third SPU is a SPU-A Shindo variant (extremely expensive). I am not quite sure about diamond shape, but could be a spherical at its best.

Hartmut
