The wires connecting Base and Emitter to the die were very thin on these TIP29955s....
Way thinner than on these TO-3s
I would say they were 'hair' thin...

In the first post there is a picture of Mouser bag - it clearly states COO : CN.
That is to say : Country Of Origin : China.

You were actually able to see the wires? Usually, when you smash open a flatpack the whole top half of the die (along with the bond wires) gets sheared off like in 57. When they survive intact (with white goo) you know they’re fake.

They snapped, but I could see their diameter on the edge of the chunk of plastic..

Slightly off topic, but.. I vaguely recall some time ago in one of these 2955/3055 threads, Taiwanese equivalents sold by a Singaporese company were mentioned. Can someone here point me in that direction? Google has not for been my friend in this search.
Quantity?
If it small, less than 500, don't .bother, just buy locally.
NTE is a small trading outfit, opinion differs on the quality.
Take care.
No ties to anybody here.

There are Mospec, UTC, Powersafe and other Taiwanese makes, but usually they insist on a large quantity.
Singapore is expensive, doubtful if there are traders selling parts there.
Indian CDIL is good, worth a try.

Those microcontroller's testers only output about 1mA.
I used to sell curve tracers that worked up to about 1 amp.

Mospec and UTC are available through distribution, and I’m pretty sure CDIL is too - so small quantities are possible. Importation can be the real problem. Then again, small quantities are likely to fall under customs radars, large ones are not.
