F5 power amplifier

I did find this earlier. A lot of this discussion seemed pre-f5m, so I didn't skim it very thoroughly.
If it's going to take reading off down another tangent and changing a bunch of parts, I'm tempted to just order some more irfp output fets.

If I can get away with the Toshiba outputs (on the Peter Daniel F5 board, but built as an F5m) with a different value trimmer, that would be sassy, but it seems like it might not be that simple if I want the best results.

It may be simpler than you expect. I only changed the outputs and the 0R47 resistors to 0R2. From what I gathered in the F5M thread, eliminating and substituting parts in the F5 circuit is pretty simple. Just compare to your PD boards. Ask questions here after you “stare at goats” like ZenMod tells us.

Well, I had already ordered all the F5 parts, in more quantity than double, because I had been planning to build 2 complete F5 amps, as my friend has had these sitting in a closet for years. His kit was the chassis, the trafo, the Peter Daniels boards, and the Toshiba fets, both input and output.

So I have everything in the F5 v2 bom (x2) minus the fets coming.

Then, building it as an F5m was mentioned, which seemed like it could be a cool idea, since I like my F5m that I already built a couple of months ago.

So, now I've got the F5 v2 schematic that's been greyed out to show deletions, and some additional parts. I ordered those additional parts this morning the ones indicated in red on the edited f5m-ified schematic.

I have a pretty good stash of stuff like trimmers and small resistors, so I can swap those around if I need to. I have some 500r, some 1k, and the 5k that are coming with the rest of the F5 parts.

That's where I'm at.

@DrDyna, build one of each! :clown:
I already have a happily running f5m, I was thinking about building the second F5 as a whole F5 because why not.

My friend, however, likes the idea of having an f5m, so that's the direction one set of these Peter Daniels boards went, I just have to figure out what all parts I'm changing so that I can run the Toshiba outputs that came in his kit.

You can leave off the protection circuit and it will be more like the new one! Many were leaving it off at the time.

Okay, so after a bit further discussion, my friend really just wants the F5v2 built on one set of the Daniels boards.

I've spent about the last 2 hours looking through threads and chasing breadcrumbs and looking around, but I can't find a definite answer to the remaining couple of questions. I can't really experiment on this amp like I would if it was mine.

I'm going to build it with the 1530/201 Toshibas on the output, and J74/K170 inputs.

I ordered ZTX551 and ZTX451 for the protection transistors.

I've looked around, but I can't find a straight answer about degeneration resistor changes (these are the 10r guys, right?)

If I get around to building one for myself, I'll do a bunch of experimentation and gleefully smoke some cheap fets trying out different things, but I really need him to be able to take this home and use it. I will probably bias it pretty low, I'm only running barely over 1a (0.5v across .47r) on my f5m, and I have no plans on pushing the bias up to egg frying levels, so if there's anything specific I need to do that differs from the f5v2 schema, please let me know. Like I said, I did a bunch of digging and found a lot of conversation, but my engineering knowledge is a bit lackluster when it comes to solid state amps.
