Go Canada!
What?
We're not allowed because we're not part of Europe? Man, you guys are lucky. Canada is a world powerhouse in football (soccer) looking to deliver a big ol' can 'o' whoop-@$$ to some unsuspecting nation.
Well, I guess we'll see you in the Olympics.
What?
Oh, I see.
Well good thing, 'cause it's the time of year I should be outside doing things other than TV anyway, right? 🙂

Time of year to be outside.... 😕
Sorry Cal, I'm 15 mins from the beach, we have two times of year here, time to put clothes on and the time to take them off .. 🙂

@Darwin,
Err, In the euro cup yes , i was commenting on British style football , which typically suffer's from a lack of goals .
Typically for England when at WC .... 🙂
England's done alright this time, they've just beaten Sweden 3:2.
They could still go home though…
if canada were allowed to have skates on we would actually beat the hell out of an all-star team of best players present at the euro...unfortunately, some big heads are against it
supposedly that the rigidity required for the skates to operate well would allow the ball to be kicked with way too much vigor...🙂

How is it strange to see Italy play defensively?
The italian philosophy has always been that if the other team can't score Italy can't lose while the brazilian one is the opposite and the german strategy is not to let the other team play the way they like to ie essentially destructive.
In '04 Greece won by out-german even the germans, unsurprisingly at that time Greece had a german coach.
This time Germany plays less in the german style than usual but then they have a young team and more young players coming through than they know what to do with as their youth programs are second to none. This is because the vast majority of german league teams are not-for-profit organizations and all the TV money has got to be spent, either on youth programs or other sports.
Another upshot of this is that tickets for german league games cost 1/3 of what they cost for english league games, on the other hand the average attendancy is 3x of that in England.
Strange only in that they did not take this approach vs. the Spaniards and did not exploit the midfield weakness of the Croat alignment as regularly as I would have expected.
Yes the German soccer program develops talent like few others.
Glad to see the French finally breaking out decisively...was not able to see the English/Sweden match but will watch the replay tonight......more interesting football to come, I'm sure!😀
Isn't rare, the typical italian tactical are the "catenaccio" , but they knew that this tactic wasn't good for play against the spanish team.
Yes that tactic was their undoing in 2010 as well
Interesting observation.
It is a fact, that most strikers are only as good as their team mates passing skills allows them to be. VERY few players in modern fotball history had the ability to win games by their own. Diega Maradona (Argentina) and Ronaldo (Brazil) is two of them.
As Schweinsteiger and Sneijder prove the strikers (indeed, the entire teams) require helmsmen to steer the attack in modern football, until and unless, real individual footballing genius breaks a team out of its own lethargy. Ronaldo has the talent but perhaps not the poise under national pressure--yet--to do so. Robben has that talent but seems not to be able to contain his anger...in 1998 Patrick Kluivert was able to inspire his Dutch team beyond itself and that's what i wait for in a game...one player on any team willing and able to raise his team beyond its capabilities.

While very much a fan of both, they would Not be able to do so today, not with the speed and size of current players....
Speed and size are but one piece of the puzzle...grit, drive, determination, pride and poise under pressure are larger factors in the end on this international stage...Pele, Maradona, the other Ronaldo and others had this in spades and won games when other teams and prime-donas would have thrown in the towel.
Right, its about what you got under pressure. If you can still think clearly and operate at the same level, you have something. In the end, that is what separates the truly great from the just talented.

Err Ok , And this changes my statement how ? The defensive players today are bigger and faster than in the past , Small players are disappearing , play makers like Zidane is more the required norm to win games..
A lot of ball movement to win today .....
The English are showing signs of panache! Lovely goals especially that header by Gerrard and the cute move by Welbeck spinning the ball of a back heel..loved the grit to fight back from a deficit...wonder how Rooney's introduction into the lineup will change team dynamics...there's the look of a pit bull in his eyes while he's been on the bench...
Wasn't surprised by the outcome of the France/Ukraine match but feel for Shevchenko who, particularly at his age, shows fire and amazing technique....

Missed it all waiting for the Flying Wallenda to come to Canada. I see the border security were there to make sure he wasn't bringing any contraband. 🙂

I am saying that Pele, Ronaldo (Brazil), Maradonna and others would have no problem using the speed and size of their opposition against them...which they did when pitted against their larger framed European competition.
What Spain and many South American teams do to counter larger faster defensive athletes is utilize precision.
Yes,ball movement is essential but ball control whether defensive or offensive is more important.
In the first 15 mins of Germany/Holland match the Dutch moved the ball but did not control it in the sense that the movement was leading to something of merit. The Germans had less movement in the first half but when they did control it, the results were devastating.

Sometimes we have no more than invoke the Messiah ... err ... Messi.😀
You who know, how one can have as good players, while a team that bad?😕

I could be wrong Cal..but something tells me International Football (Soccer) is not top of your things to watch list😉

The English have long been ... our children.😀
It was not necessary the Hand of God.😎

Indeed!
Strikers are expandable on the whole.
Germany in the '70s had Gerd Muller (aka 'The Bomber') as a striker (68 goals in 62 internationals, 398 goals in 458 appearances for Bayern and voted in 2000 as World Footballs greatest goal scorer ever) but everybody knows that the true genius in the german team was Franz Beckenbauer (aka 'The Kaiser') and absolutely essential to the german successes. He played the 'position' of libero and is the only man to have won the World Cup as a player and as a coach. He did score only few goals: 104 appearances for Germany, 14 goals; 406 and 66 for Bayern, 28 and 0 for Hamburg.
Beckenbauer was the enabler for Muller and if not the greatest player ever he was certainly in possession of the greatest footballing mind.

If they were allowed skates they'd lose every game 30:0.
Skates don't work that well on grass ;-).
May be the canadians should man up and start playing Hurling when things aren't frozen. So far it seems only the irish have the cojones to play it.
Although even they have gone soft now and allow field players to wear helmets (but no other protection).
In some irish hospitals over 50% of weekend injuries are Hurling related.
