Hey, I love that stuff!!!!!!!
Hey Jean & Dozuki,
I'm not a big expert concerning jungle etc, but man, I love that ****!!!!! My first jungle experience was hearing a track called "wicked thing" by General Pecos (do you guys know him?)
My cousin played it to me, and f#ck, it totally blew me away!!!!!!
Do you know DHR (Digital Hardcore Records)??
They have some really harsh breakbeat/ Breakcore stuff.
My favourite track is "future trouble" by Patric CAtani.
Check it out if you don't know them!!!!!
Dozuki, concerning "I hear DnB in the backgrounds of all kinds of commercial", I can tell you, that here in Germany even TV sports- shows have about 10-15 second long D'n'B jingles.
(But that's almost the only occasion you hear good music on TV).
I don't watch MTV / VIVA whatever crap because of some ideological aversion against it.
regards,
bob4

When 1420 3XY was THE radio station...
Can anyone give a translation of the words? Whoa! Deep and meaningful. Better sit down. 😉
GP.
It was about September 1974 and I was doing my homework and listening to Lee Simon's Album Show on my home made tube radio late one weeknight, and he put on this long track by - did he say Craftwork? I was riveted and went straight out and bought it that weekend. As you can see, I still have it. Don't buy hardly any music at all nowadays though.Peter Daniel said:It doesn't even bother me if the lyrics are in German, it kind of suits the music.😉

Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk was probably my first encounter with electronic music (or was it Oxygene?)😉
Oxygene was my first at a friends house, who was into electronics at that time and I got hooked 🙂

Hi Circlotron,
yep, you're right
😀
OK, first of all: Autobahn means Highway/Freeway
the lyrics say:
"We're drivin' drivin' drivin' on the Autobahn,
ahead lies a broad valley,
sunrays shinin' bright,
the road is a grey band,
white strips, green side,
now we switch the radio on,
and the speaker sings "We're drivin on the Autobahn....." "

My first listen to Electronic Music was in 1970 to walter carlos switched on bach. This got me Hooked on Electronic music now called by most Electronica. This Genre has been around since the 1950's with some Old stuff done on Analog tape using Loops. I soon got into jarre and Oxygen is what i would play for gusts to introduce them to Electronic music. About 90% of those that listened liked Oxygen with some saying not so nice things like Evil and scary. Below are links to some Electronic Music i keep in rotation.

Electronica
Wow did this thread explode in just a few days!!!!
First, I'm rather disappointed that most people here seem to want to classify electronic music as techno, when its the other way around. In my opinion, electronic music is music that is made by electronic instruments and may not exist in nature. This excludes early Oldfield by the way, since I saw someone mention him. I love his early music, but they were all ACTUAL INSTRUMENTS, no electronic involved. (Unless you count the "two slightly distorted guitars")
Now, when I think of electronic, I agree with the others, Kraftwerk, Jarre, Kitaro, Vangelis (Love the Jon and Vangelis disks, Jon Anderson on vocals and John Vangelis doing the music, really cool!) . However, I'm disappointed no-one mentioned one truly classic electronic musician: Michael Fast of Synergy fame! His stuff was almost pure electronic! (I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure) He's done some really great stuff!
I was also happy to see a mention of Walter Carlos (or later Wendy Carlos) also very good stuff! Carlos is also a good way to introduce some people to the world of electronic music as he/she took classical music and re-recorded using synthesizers and very unusual sounds. (Think Clockwork Orange, for those not familliar with the stuff)
What bothers me is that most people have decided that the techno/house/DnB/etc genre is all that there is to electronica, when they're just scratching the surface! (No pun intended) Now don't get me wrong, I do enjoy those styles as well, but again, they're not fully representative of the genre, there's a lot more to it! (Its like listening to just classic rock and deciding that's all there is to rock-n-roll!)
Enough rambling for a Monday morning!

Ya I could have listed alot more Titles but listed just a few so as to let folks know what i listen to. John and vangelis's frends of MR Cairo and Short stories are good. so is Kitaro, and tangerene dream and Mike oakfield just to name a few. I for one do not class Techno or trance as Electronic. it is however a div of Electronic Music. some Electronic Music is also listed under New age. Again somthing that is not quite what Electronic is about Synergy's Sequencer and Electronic realizations for rock Orchestra also Great and have been Remastered BTW i thought it was lary fast that was Synergy.
Re: Electronica
I've been waiting for a comment like that!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to point out at two early, groundbreaking electronic instruments, that really produced some sounds that "may not exist in nature".
It's the Theremin, named after it's russian inventor, Leo Theremin,
and the Trautonium, named after it's german inventor, Adolf Trautwein.
here are some links:
www.thereminworld.com
http://www.obsolete.com/120_years/machines/trautonium/
http://www.doepfer.de/traut/traut_e.htm (technical info on the instrument in English)
www.trautonium.de (german page about the Trautonium and Oskar Sala)
the sound of the Trautonium is incredible!!!!! But find it out yourself.....
In my opinion (that I seem to share with SChaef), electronic music means first way, that it's totally artificial.
That would mean we had to discard almost everything relating to the "techno/house/DnB/etc genre", because in the end, most of it is sample- based.
Another approach is to include music, that has been generated (or, when talking about sample-based music) put together with computers etc.
I also think that e.g. DUB is a type of electronic music, because the exessive use of delay, sirens, fading the instruments out is a integral part of the music and the only thing that makes it different from "normal" reggae/whatever.
think about it, I hope you enjoy the links...........

Splitting Hairs
Once again I'm dismayed at the human instict to catagorize everything and put it into the appropriate amartment-compartment. I've heard many definitions of 'electronic music' since I've been listening to it. Some that would catagorize ALL music today as such; to the other extreme of it being completely done with computers and artificial. I'm not trying to argue with anyone on these points as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, i think that the point is what one enjoys and not to become taxonimists with the music.
The other point I would like to make is that I dislike when people dismiss 'Dance Music' because it is solely 'sample' or 'loop' based. There is a TON of really good music within what people might lump into this catagory. Sure, there is also a lot of boring, repeditive tracks as well. But I find this within any musical genra.
Yes, I am a DJ, but to me it is all about the music and the emotional expression within. My collection is not all just the 'Dance varieties' in Electronica, I also have some Tangerine Dream (which I love), Mike Oldfield (I only like select traks), Synergy (Not very fond of) and much more. But the majority of what I listen to is 'Dance' based. The majority of this is not all sample and loop based. Most of what I listen to is 'composed' on a cumputer yes, and 'artificial' yes, but quite emotional.
I tend to belive that computers and electronics are just 'new' tools for musicians as you could similarly follow a trend in Photography, Graphic arts, and ect. The emphasis shouldn't be placed so much on HOW something was produced as it should be placed on WHAT was produced. There is good/bad pleasing/displeasing in everything, we live in a world of duality, its the great paradox.
-Dozuki
P.S. Some examples:
LTJ Bukem - Journey Inward
Portishead - Any and all
MJ Cole - Sincere
Boards of Canada - The Music Has the Right to Children
Kruder and Dorfmiester - the K&D Sessions.

I tend to agree with Dozuki on The Matter of good dance and or trance Music. I also like this but i myself would not list it under Electronic Music since IMHO this Type of music is a sub cat. of Electronic music just as Ambient, New age, Trance ect. This is to allow me to know what to expect Prior to playing it. It would be a shock to me to Play a Dance Techno CD thinking it was ambient. But that is just me.
another SUB-genre...
Back when I was in high school, I listened to a lot of Bass music... basically this stuff was created for car sound competitions, and was really meant just for showing off your subwoofer's incredible power, but this class of music grew out of techno to become what i would call a legitimate sub-category (pun intended) of electronica in it's own right. In essence, Bass music is, well, BASS! Anything above about 50Hz is pretty much just frills and filler on top of the main bassline, or melody (if you want to call it that). It sure was great fun to cruise around with the friends while blasting this stuff at 120+ dB! Wish I still had a good excuse to be a trouble maker.
Let's see... a few names come to mind:
Bass Mekanik - probably my favorite 😀
Bass Inc.
Bass 305
DJ Laz
Sub-mission
the list goes on...
OK, so what else is on my current playlist (other than the bass music!)...
Delerium - Yes! I love this stuff. Their recent album Poem is brilliant!
Aphex Twin
Amon Tobin
EZ Rollers
Jazzanova
The Future Sounds of Jazz series - chock full of good stuff, modern bands
Squarepusher
Sasha & Digweed
Incognito (fabulous music)
oh, Depeche Mode - classic
K&D
Massive Attack
etc...
Way too many more to list here, but those are a small sample of some of my more contemporary favorites.

Re: Hair splitting
Hey Dozuki,
I'm sorry you got my posts a little bit wrong..........
My intention was NOT to find a perfect definition fo "electronic music", but, well, to play around with the term, and find out, how other users on this forum think about it, what idea/image they have.
Of course I prefer listening to music rather than trying to decide whether it is acid/polka/folk/techno or hybrid/worldmusic/breakbeat/funk........😀
hey, as I pointed out above, "discarding everything related to...." was purely hypothetical, it was not meant as a degrading judgement on the quality of sample- based music. ( I fear I didn't express myself clear enough 🙁 )
I know that music is only about emotion............ If it wasn't that way, this forum wouldn't exist, because to us, there would be no difference between what we call music and sound in general!!
OK, so if we transfer that on audio: "The emphasis shouldn't be placed so much on HOW something is REproducedas it should be placed on WHAT is REproduced.", we wouldn't have any reason to build our own unque system to satisfy our demands on music reproduction, instead we could just buy some off-the-shelf crap, and be happy with it!!!!!
Categorizing things is a basic way we humans deal with the input we get from our environment, we compare everything we experience with previous experiences............
If exagerrated, this principle of course turns into something bad, as somebody tries to squeeze everything into a drawer and put a nice etiquette on it. But messing aorund with it can be sooooooo exciting!!!!!!!! My intention is to play around with it in a flexible way keeping my mind open and not to harden on it.
I hope I've explained my intention well enough
regards,
bob
PS: btw, I looooooove Bukems "Atlantis", it's amazing! Causes a lot of emotion inside my brain..............😀 😀

Re: Splitting Hairs
Absolutely agree. However, this thread was started to discuss what people consider electronic music and what they like in those sub-genres. I was just getting a little annoyed that some of the generalizations were leaving out some great artists from the earlier eras. (Which I really like)
Who is dismissing it? If anything, people were just trying to point out that technically, its not really electronic. Depending on what is used in the loops, they may be real instruments, and thus for some, don't qualify as electronic music. Not that it isn't a genre or is bad.
This gets to an argument I have with my wife on occasion. Its her opinion that if the computer is used to create the item, its not art. I, of course, disagree and believe it is what is represented that matters. If its emotion you're after, try posting that as a thread starter and see what pops up! You'll find almost everyone has tracks/artists/disks that they consider very emotional and are their prized posessions!
By the way, if Mike Oldfield falls into the category of electronic music (which I still disagree with) what about Laurie Anderson? She's more processed than Oldfield has been.
On a side note, to ppl, you are correct, and I apologize to Larry, it is Larry Fast of Synergy, that's what I get for typing too early in the morning!
So, if whoever started this thread doesn't mind, why don't we make a minor change to this thread and discuss something along the lines of:
If someone came to you asking about electronic music, what would you give them to listen to, as an introduction? Which sub-genre, artist, and/or disk? (This should prove quite interesting)
Assume they know nothing about the whole genre, but just know you like it, and are curious to hear something new.

The Only Laurie Anderson Disc i have is her Big Science Warner Bros. # 3674-2. I like this alot and the Title track the Best. Oh yes indeed it is true Electronic Music.
If i were to introduce someone to Electronic music I think i still would recomend Jarre's Oxygen.

Bob4, Scheaf, et al-
Thanx for the replies=) I really enjoyed them, and it's good to find a forum with intelligent, friendly people. I'm sorry if I seemed argumentative, I didn't mean to. And Bob4, I wan't picking on you, in fact I quite agree with alot of your views from this thread as well as others. You just presenting some statements that I have heard come out of the mouths of people who don't have such an open mind and wanted to clearify some points for anyone who may be lurking and in need of a 'can-opener' for the mind so to speak. Of course I was also venting a little. At my wedding my wife and I wanted the music at the reception to be deep house and intelligent jungle. You should have heard all the b**ching out we got for that. But in the end we had our way and the people who objected the most ended up dancing to jungle =).
The whole splitting hairs thing is another sort of beef that I personally have with the way a western society handles information. I'm an intuitive person and like to process info in this manner, the opposite of this is of course the side of empiricism. I find that western societies tend to lean more toward the empirical than the intuitive, while I find the greatest quest in life to be the perfect balance of the 2. Sorry for the rant there.
As for what I would give to someone as an introduction? Probably depends on the person, but off hand I would say K&D. Or a good mix of intelligent jungle.
Lorrie Anderson ROCKS! Now this REALLY is ART, performance art that is. 'Sharkey's day' and the one about walking and always falling are two of my Favs.
Would there be any ineterest in creating a compilation CD? or Trading some music by the people on this thread (or others)?
All the best,
Dozuki
P.S. ohhhhhh Atlantis =) VERY Emotional for me as well.
Or a good mix of intelligent jungle.

strange instruments
OK,
I want to point out again at the links on these early electronic instruments, that weren't noticed due to the little misunderstandings that occurred...........
PLease tell me if you know the Theremin and/or Trautonium, and what you think about them.........
I've also found a new, diy-related link about the Trautonium (perhaps somebody gets so excited he wants to build his own 😀 😀 ).

Now that we know each other we can carry on arguing in a constructive way (if you know what I mean... 😉 )
