I used the 510 ohm resistors instead of the 1k.

The fact that you are getting a voltage drop across those 510 ohm resistors is an indication that the mosfets are suspect. There should be no gate current. When I first built one of these I had a similar problem, likely due to poor handling and static discharge. Replacing the suspect mosfet fixed the problem.

I wrote Eli a few months ago. He has been exceptionally busy with family matters. I didn't get details. My guess is that he won't be back online for a while, if at all. Regarding these MOSFETs, I have blown several, and now use 15V half-watt Zeners across source and gate. So far, so good.
