DSP Xover project (part 2)

Hi,
just in case, I have designed a two symmetrical input pcb ( 5 x 5 cm) and a four symmetrical output pcb (5 x 10 cm) that could fit your bill 🙂. these boards could be seen somewhere in this thread

Hi Jean Claude, I was wondering if you were offering your rather neat XLR output boards for sale, or if it's an open-source project? I'm having trouble finding a neat solution to balance the outputs, and I don't really want to reinvent the wheel. Do you use the SSM2142 or one of the THAT Corporation chips? Also, just out of interest, did you notice any difference between the volume controller's unbuffered op-amp output and your balanced line driver? What I'm aiming for is transparency and a lack of "character" 🙄

I still have 4 symmetrical output PCB left so I can send 2 to you. Let's jump to private forum mail in that case.

I use for these boards THAT CORP chip and the sound is very good. Transparency is here. But the main reason I decided to go that way is that all my power amplifiers have symmetrical inputs and I love not to have to deal with ground loops...

And to be honest, I did not compare the sound of the original asym outputs and mine. I have used the CS3318 in other designs without further buffer behind and it sounded quite good.

Just want to sell my Najda.
- New chassis from HIFI2000 (10 mm front panel - brushed anodized aluminium)
- All power supply sources are linear, using audio capacitors, see picture
- Output Opamp changed to 4562
- System equipped also with full balanced inputs/outputs using professional THAT IC's -all you need is to connect XLR boards to PSU and mainboard.
System is fully working, no problems or bugs.
Apple's remote control comes with

Should the External master clock input on pin 27 have 3,3v or 5v?

All the DSP's inputs and outputs are 3,3V (see datasheet), so the MCLK input should be at that level too. AFAIK Najda does not support an external clock (not yet implemented in software).

Twisted Pear 8 channel DAC. Can it be used in place of Cirrus Logic?

If so -- is this a difficult upgrade? Worth a try?

Some questions regarding I2S output

The I2S signal has to travel about 100 mm from source to expansion port 1. There are no in-line resistors, so no damping close to the source is possible. Has anyone found this to be an issue?

Are the on board I2S lines impedance controlled?

Is the DSP capable to drive 3 gates?

Is it adviseable to integrate some buffers for the I2S signal?

I plan to make some adapter boards and connect the Najda and my DACs with 50 mm U.FL cables.

Just for your reference, I've made an I2S to U.FL adapter pcb for Nadja and I'm driving 3 x Buffalo II DAC with 100mm long U.FL cables
No any problem at all.
 
I would like to use the Najda for sub x-over and pre-amp for starters.
I have a question about how/where to handle the volume control
Setup would be: Streamer > Najda > for the sub: analog out >amp > sub
And for the speakers:> digital out >Dac >amp >Speakers.

So, is there an volume control for the analog and digital out combined?

Already found my answer.
No there is not.
If i use only analog outputs it can. But i think my current dac is better than the ones used in Najda. So in that scenario i can use the volume control in the streamer (not ideal i guess). Perhaps the on-board dac will surprise me and i will use analog out only. Will continue with a Najda build 🙂
 
I'll do it that way:

Remove opamp coupling capacitors (upper 22µF)
DAC single ended output positive line into capacitor's negative
DAC analog ground into AGND

From there the signal goes straight into the CS3318 volume control IC.

Not the whole answer!
There is a possibility to re-insert the analog signal from Your DAC back into Najda before the analog volume control.
It is described far away in this thread and might take a bit of soldering, but not too complicated....
be aware of possible differences in latency time, so measure and adjust delay, but it might be a minor problem fpr a subwoofer.

I will take it in consideration. Soldering on the board is not really my level of diy, but who knows 🙂
I also have a stand alone (non diy dac) so the wires would be long and a bit strange. It does look quite simple...
