Does this explain what generates gravity?

That's a glow-worm! Common enough in summer in the country.... 🤣

For some reason we were talking about the August meteor storms at the watering hole this evening when unwinding from a Glorious day at Goodwood when "Great Chieftain" turned into a "Great Earner" for the man the bookies fear. 20-1!

Naturally I knew this is the Perseids which peak in mid August. the 11-12th to be exact, with a meteor every few minutes.

Perseids August 11-12 2024 Swift-Tuttle 2126 After Midnight because of Half Moon.jpg

Best seen after midnight this year due to the half-moon. In fact these are the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle which a lot of us saw in 1992.

There was a fear that Swift-Tuttle might hit the Earth in 2126, but this has been now postponed a few thousand years with more accurate observations.

It would have been lights out for humans. At 18km across, this would have been 27X worse than the one that dispatched the dinosaurs 66M years ago!

Notice bright Capella on the NE horizon. I expect it is even higher in Stockholm Sweden... 🙂

I've witnessed the Perseids on many occasions while walking the unlit road from the pub in the village to my campsite in the NE of Scotland.

Yes, I saw one every few minutes or, as NASA puts it, 50 to 100 per hour.

Each Perseid meteor is said to be no bigger than a grain of sand, but it still creates quite a spectacle!

It's important to get your eyes adjusted to the dark which can take 30 minutes. Don't spoil it by looking at your mobile phone!

In the "old thread" there was a member promoting an electrical view of the Universe. A youtube video link was posted to a lecture by someone who promoted this view - anyone recall the video? Please post link if you recall...

Yes, I feel charged ;-D

I strongly discourage you from reading Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision", solely on the grounds that "The Electric Universe" people like it.

Worlds in Collision.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worlds_in_Collision

The mind-numbing theory is that Venus is a Comet expelled by Jupiter 3,500 years ago. It then grazed the Earth twice causing us to momentarily stop spinning on our axis causing multiple catastrophes, before settling into its current circular orbit.

Amazingly this hoey topped the best-seller list in America in 1950. Didn't Erich Von Daniken later do something similar with "Chariots of the Gods" which proved that Aliens were here 2,000 years ago? 🤣

Strange events tonight in Portsmouth. A bright light was observed by yours truly hovering in the North East above the horizon:

The camera cannot lie! I wonder if it was Electric Plasma? Or a Flying Saucer? Or @TNT's sparkling rainbow mystery object? 😕

Enquiring minds want to know.

However you can read it here if you're a glutton for punishment: https://archive.org/details/B-001-014-474/mode/2up

Däniken's book and a follow up still reside in my loft.

Why are the patterns formed by the Nazca lines, dating to a time when mankind had no flying machines, only truly visible from above?

The aerial image below includes "The Condor".

Drawn by, or drawn to attract, aliens according to Erich von Däniken.

I wonder if it was Electric Plasma? Or a Flying Saucer? 😕

That's a helicopter out looking for a suspicious night time photographer following reports from several concerned residents of Southsea! 😀

At 00.30 I pointed my 300mm towards NNE 30 deg (?), positioned in Stockholm, I caught these. A thing on the dark sky catches my attention as it seemed to flicker in color so I opted for a try to document it... Its one and the same object but with somewhat of a sloppy post processing... Of course it was small... What was it?

One boring summer (1960?) I read my Mother's copy of Velikovsky World's in Collision. The Venus involvement was specious, but some billion years before that some asteroid bashed the earth and created the moon. That theory is mainstream now I believe.
The large size of our moon has been used by science fiction writers as a unique Identifier of our solar system. Asimov claimed in Robots and Empire that extreme tides caused by the 1/6 sized moon explain the large presence of uranium & radium in the crust. He theorized that caused evolution to happen particularly fast on Earth, causing the unique creation of intelligent life on this planet. The prevalence of uranium also allowed Dr. Amadiro of Aurora to seed Earth with radiation intensifier machines and cause the planet to become uninhabitable.
Spent some minutes this weekend at my summer camp looking to southeast for meteors. Nothing. Per post 4602 I should have been looking to northeast. Pity no internet access at my summer camp (except t-mobile), but that is why the sky is so dark out there. Requires a 30 minute walk in the dark to see the northeast, trees in that direction from the porch of my trailer. Last time I walked out to perhaps see the nova I stepped in a rabbit hole and almost sprained something.

My Asimov novels are languishing in the loft in the hope of being re-read some day. But so many novels and so little time!

I decided to check out what was behind Asimov's claim quoted above and came up with this:

The radioactive Earth theme started with novels Asimov wrote in the 1950s when fears of world-wide nuclear war were at their height.

Asimov considered back then that such a conflict would make the Earth's crust highly radioactive.

Realising that this was implausible from a physics point of view, he decided to give an alternative explanation decades later in Robots and Empire.

I used to subscribe to National Geographic (NG) and the explanation for the glyphs of animals and birds on the sides of the mountains in Peru and Chile, had to do with the people in this region undergoing terrible droughts brought about by what we now know as El Nina. Further, the droughts were particularly severe from about 500 AD to 1500 AD (seems to somewhat tie in with the medieval warm period of 900 AD to 1300 AD here in Europe). The glyphs were pleas to their gods to send rain. A lot of the mummified human sacrifices were also linked to this. That's the archaeologists' explanation.

However, what do you do if you are off your rocker and have served jail time for IIRC fraud? You write a book claiming aliens came and the locals build runways and signs to help them (presumably because they weren't smart enough to work out where to land) and the suckers lined up to buy the book. I have to admit that when I was about 20 years old, I read the book and believed in aliens. I no longer believe in them.

Apologies if I've poisoned his thread. Let's get back to science.

The story goes that Newton had a carpenter cut two holes in his office door - a large one for his cat and a small one for her kittens.

Of course, the kittens simply followed their mother through the large hole!

Above is an early example of a cat door, but with only one hole.
Clearly, if he had a carpenter cut holes in the door for the cats, he was a very decent man.

"The mind-numbing theory is that Venus is a Comet expelled by Jupiter 3,500 years ago. It then grazed the Earth twice causing us to momentarily stop spinning on our axis causing multiple catastrophes, before settling into its current circular orbit."

Is that mind-numbing or mind-bumbling?
