diyAudio Full Range Reference Project

Chris, Scott & I got together to listen & tweak the FE127 prototypes, clean up the "recycle facility" a bit, listen, etc. Converted my Mulligan to an approximation of an RH84, and threw together a set of budget di-poles (Chris wanted to toss a set of unual shaped desk "wings" i had collected off the side of the road, i said i would use them for open baffles, he said when would i ever get at it, i grabbed a set of vintage foster 6" with whizzer cones and tasked Scott to build them... which he did on the back of his truck -- completely untweaked they sounded quite respectable.)

Here are Scott's solid Doug Fir (Yew baffle on the babies), folder mono-pole ML-TLs, and a bipole ML-TQWT....

Re: bipole 127 vs buschhorn

Hi, I noticed that you guys also had buschhorns. I wonder if you could make a comment on how the 127 bipole compares?

Hey Jim... call me, i tried to hunt you down a while back to get a copy or 2 of your 1st album...

A little early to tell yet... B-Horn with FE108ES is better (wouldn't have been with the pacity of hours on the FE127s) althou bass does not have as much authority (to be expected with the small mouth of B-Horn)... been a while since i've heard B-Horn with 40-1197 or FE103A. the bi-poles fill the room in a different manner as well...

BTW, welcome to the Forum Jim...

and as a bit of an intro to others, Jim is another Sound Hound alumnus, a competent speaker builder (i still have a set of his baffle-step-less DIVAs) and he was the 1st one who ever described push-push loading to me (back in the early 80s)....

Also a very talented musician, the album mentioned above (unfortunatly not available on vinyl), besides being totally enjoyable music wise is a very good set of test tracks. His ensemble uses instruments that, if not scratch built, have been mutated into something unique...

Hi Dave, Sorry, wrong Jim. I have been a Sound Hounds alumni in the sense that I have been an occasional customer since the 70's. As to competent speaker builder all I can say is that I have played at it since the 70's also. I actually did play with push push about 1984. Talented musician NOT! I put the old saxophone away yrs. ago. Nice welcome though.

Buschhorn/FE108Sigma

I sold these things a few weeks too early - but they're still around.

Hopefully we can arrange for a group listen at their new home.
IMNSHO, even though the BHMKII may well have compromises in design, particularly in respect to bass extension, the midbass & up performance of a well broken in FE108Sigma makes up for it.

In the meantime, between futzing around with the 127 (which in spite of a certain engineer's claims, is in fact quite a listenable driver, even fresh from the box) and amp topologies, Dave & I are trying to solidify our mind-games (or hallucinations) for the Dlugel-horn into a real-world & buildable design. (how often does a wife volunteer to pay for the drivers ?)

Oops... i saw Jim G & Sooke (& it was past my bedtime) & put 2 & 2 together & got 5 his time 🙂

It will be good to have more members of the growing Vancouver Island DIY group ... we have informal get togthers all the time, and formal ones a couple times a year. Hopefully another medium size one up the mountain this summer.

Unfortunately our Jim G in Sooke is not the Jim G in Sooke (Jim Gawne) that did the music... i can try to find the one album i have and dig out some info. Sound Hounds (soundhounds at shaw.ca) might still have some of the CDs -- IMHO the 1st album is the better of the two.

For those that haven't ever met Dave, Chris, Scott and the rest of the crew, there IS a reason why they're confined to an island:^)
They're the kind of guys that must have driven their third grade teachers absolutely batty! OTOH, they're very independent, creative and original in all that they do.
Those get togethers must be a blast.
Best Regards,
TerryO

kindrid spirits

Well Terry:
Of all the DIYer's out there, I think you for sure could be considered one of us. Just the right amount of eccentricity to still sort of fit into regular society. You know it is only a short swim over to our rock and I think they would let you in without a pass port if you told them you knew the three of us.
I look forward to our next get together. What are you building these days

Terry: just make sure you green card your treasures at Customs on the way over if you mention Dave's name as a reference :hot:

I understand they're getting much gentler with the gloves theses days :devilr:

and don't worry about finishing any speaker projects before you leave - between the 3 of us, we can find a work bench, screw driver and soldering iron

Real Life Measurements

For those who are interested I have uploaded the measurement results of my design to my web page which is;

http://www.yildiz.edu.tr/~ilkorur/

They can be found under Fostex FE127E tab.

As for the measurements I have used my Radford STA25 S3 amplifier, the response of my amplifier will be added also. In order to make my room modes clear I have also added the MLS response without the time window. Also you can find the distorsion curves under the sine sweep. Speaker was placed 30 cm from rear and the side wall.

Then we no doubt would recognize each other... i worked at Sound Hounds from 1976-1981.

I did run into the other Jim G from Sooke yesterday (on Hiway 1 -- heading into town near Thetis Lake -- we stopped and chatted, hopefully he will be dropping in)
