diyAudio Full Range Reference Project

pics of the straight bipoles after Chris' latest mods... (i've only seen the pictures, but based on them, i think i prefered the cosmetics when the stands were solid...)

Chris reports that the sound is getting better day-by-day, and that is really the important part.

Nice work guys!
I'm following the thread with interest.
I think though I'd prefer the look of the folded version (not as tall). Any disadvantages of the folded configuration over the strait one and this cabinet over the Double BR?

Thanks.
Greg

folded MLTL and TQWP bipole

Attached is a photo of my fleet of fostex speakers. The book shelf is a folded Fe127 MLTL, the wedge is a bipole Fe127, the tower is last years Fe167 MLTL. My fe127 projects only have a few hours on music on them so things are getting smoother and better as the hours go by. So far I am absolutely loving these drivers. I have been listening to a range of music and the little darlings seem to stand up to everything I have put to them. Sure they are a little honky and unbalanced right now, but…… I went through the roller coaster ride with the fe167 and I already know what is to come.

I first need to be patient and let them break in. Then I need to play with the stuffing to tune them just right. This is a little painful as taking the drivers out and in is always a little heart pounding. (I keep remembering the fellow that slipped and put a philips screw driver through a very expensive driver.). I also have to work up the filter for the folded MLTL at or about the same time. This is a little hard to do as you really only can change one thing at a time (determining cause and effect in multivariate scenarios is too hard for my little brain).
Folded MLTL
Right now the thing I like most is the clarity of the mid range it truly is great. Human voice and acoustic instruments sound very real. I listened to cut of some Patricia Barber that features a string bass and was wowed, this is after only a few days of break in. OH boy this is going to be good.

TQWP bipoles
The bipoles have a only a few hours on them. They are screamy right, now attempting to get things sorted out and stretched into shape. I have a fairly open room with a large ceiling. The thing my wife and I notice right away is that these speakers really fill the room. The bipole expands the stereo image wonderfully.

So far all is good and sounding very nice.

i just read this whole thread and i'm pretty interested in these speakers. i have a few questions. could i make them work nearfield? and secondly, what kind of sound can i expect from them? right now i have the original advent loudspeakers so how can i compare the sound of the fostex speakers to those?

You can't... but if the surrounds are still holding together on your advents they would probably make good active woofers to augment the Fostex....

🙂

i've re-surrounded them last year. I have several drivers to make a suwoofer out of so i don't need to scrap the advents... basically what i'm asking is if these fostex speakers will be more detailed, more accurate, and have better imaging. in other words, will they sound better. 😉

Yes to all of the above -- i know the Advent well, having sold hundreds of them new...

well, i have to say i'm all the more excited about this project 🙂

what do you think about using them nearfield and having a subwoofer cover the low end? could they work on a desk or near one if they are in a bass reflex design or should i just make floorstanding ones?

wouldn't 110hz make the sub position directional? what do you think? would it be hard to drop the x/o to closer to 80?

possibly... the numbers i chose were based on the roll-off of the sealed sats.

It is nearfield -- there is likely a desk between you and the sub... most nearfields are XOing to a mono woofer at 150-250 Hz... a better solution is 2 woofers.

i guess i'll have to think about this more carefully. these boxes will be pretty big for a desk anyway. I don't want stand mounted ones because i'm going to make dedicated monitors. maybe i'll just make some nice looking angled floorstanders and stick them in the corner. i like some of the designs earlier in this thread 🙂.
