After hearing all of the sweet sounds there was nothing left to do but SPL 😉
Thanks again Chris, and all who were there.

Excellent people. Really. I will be short this time. Graham's speaker are very good. Keep it this way.
Hi guys I had a good time and the next time we meet, I will bring out my Leaches with fully regulated power supplies and possibly compare it to the Bryston 3b we had.
To those interested in building Leaches, contact jleaman who has appeared on this thread. Fred & Mihai were interested. I have put off building another Leach because I also have another fully regulated Super Leach weighing close to 100 lbs sitting in storage. Won't fit in my trunk and will kill my back if I try and move it. BTW, it's close to 20 years old now!!!! Possibly time for a re-cap.

Would love to hear some impressions of what you guys thought of the speakers using the wr125 driver! 🙂
Fred's speaker....what tweeter is that? Cantus?

Tweeter on Fred's Speaker
Drvideo,
The tweeter is the Raven R1 mated with a Seas W15CY and the crossover was designed by Dennis Murphy. I only do the woodworking.

Chris,
Thanks very much for hosting. I am only sorry that I missed the first one.
My education is just beginning I see. There is so much to be gained by associating with all who were there. It was very much worth the drive. I'm looking forward to the next one already.

Love at first sight?
Something is wrong at the meet yesterday. I went to bed thinking about it and when I woke up this morning first thing came to my mind. *****! it is troubling me mind
It was Graham's speakers! I think I miss them already. Can I have them back for 5 years to do the long term reliability test for you?

PS: I enjoyed our last meet very much! Thank you everyone that made it yesterday. Sorry to morbo that we could not listen to all his speakers.

Re: Love at first sight?
DVD,
Those are Seas 27TDFC and Extremis with a JonMarsh designed crossover at 1.2 kHz and the enclosure designed by me.
Thanks Chris 😀
I'll bring them to the next meet. There may be some minor changes to the crossover and cabinet.
dvdvideo said:Sorry, forgot to ask, the black speakers, is that a kit61? Extremis 6.8 with usher?

My impression is that I have to make a pair with the WR125 as soon as possible !
Interesting driver and it sounded nice given it's simplicity. For a near field monitor it might be ideal for certain applications where space is a limitation.
This speaker and the extremis/seas I thoroughly enjoyed. Very good designs. Now graham's speaker were not yet broken in and for a long stroke driver that could very well be crucial. But something kept popping in my head afterwards, I had heard a speaker designer once commented that he in fact did not like long stroke woofers because they tend to sound slow and compressed to him. Even going back to the SWAN 305 of some "15+ years ago", the preference was to go to two less expensive drivers rather than a single high quality driver. Well there are a couple reasons why, first is the acoustic coupling effect which gives rise to a 3db gain in acoustic efficiency and then there is power gain from your amp ( if it can handle low impedances ). But I am digressing.
I told graham I thought that the voicing and crossover sounded right but there was "something" in the attack that was missing. First thing I would try was to get some really solid stands with spikes on the floor and to the speakers too. My theory is that when small drivers have to reproduce sound they have to travel fast and they accelerate hard. This means a very fast impulse on the cabinet. Newton's law comes into play here. The other thing I noted was that there was considerable vibrations on the baffle and I could see why. Grahams bracing was like like three interior front baffles going inside. Now, something that some builders don't appreciate is that when you start cutting the front baffles ( holes) you appreciably weaken it. What I would recommend to graham would be to install some more braces that DIRECTLY supports the front baffle that would minimize flex and these would brace to the first interior vertical brace. Additionally, I would thicken the front baffle as well. Perhaps this would sharpen the transient more. BUT I wonder if the statement I heard was coming into play here, is it that long stroke drivers tended to sound not as quick? Hmmm....
What is noteworthy though is that as you get into topnotch drivers as some DIYers would do, sources of coloration become critical and box resonance in high end setups show their signatures. Some people enjoy the warmer sound of particle board enclosures versus that of MDF. So really it is a matter of taste. So going back to the WR125, I wonder if they would sound "fun" if 1/2" particle board was used.
This is what makes the hobby interesting, no?

WR125 so simple no cross overs
Here is my impression of the little speakers for the day.
They were pretty impressive for the range it can reproduce. But we did not do its justice because the room is simply way too big for it to perform properly. My room is about 850 to 900 sq.ft. There was nothing I dislike regarding its tonal characteristic. There was a brief moment that it was over driven by the powerful Byston 3Bst (my fault!), but it handled very well under such distress situation. My Jordan Jx150 would have slapped so hard that it make sure you know it is suffering, so it try to hurt your ears too. But these little speakers were polite. I have not really listened to small size speakers in small room for a long time to really do a proper judgment. Like you, before I listen to them before I have thought of getting a couple to replace my Jx53 and use them like the Jx92. They are so much cheaper than the Jx92. For my personal taste I like a wall of sound and the speakers disappear. So a line array with these little guys would be a fun project for me.

Hey Chris, anytime you want to build a line array I'd be glad to help. Eventually I'll build another one but right now I don't have the space for it. I built a small 4 ft one for one of my relatives 17 yrs ago and I did commit some mistakes, the first was baffle step diffraction and the other was that it did not go as low as you would have expected a large enclosure to go. The worse mistake was that I was not aware of the transition from near field to far field effects and it only made sense after I had read griffin's papers. It was voiced in the near field but was used in the far field and it never did sound right in a large room.
"IF" one could afford a line of extremis woofers like graham's (say 12 per side) and also a line of tiny neodyniums ( like morel's or even PE's) I imagine it would sound really nice. You could throw them in a sealed enclosure, put some electronic bottom octave boost and have a true full range two way. With the number of woofers used, the increase in efficiency due to acoustic coupling would remove one of the detractions of the extremis. And best, I found the Line Arrays don't appear to "load" a room like normal boxes.

I am also vey interested in a pair of Line Array speakers and have been coveting the ones featured on the CSS website.
